Pros: The StarTech 4 Port IEEE-1394 Firewire PCI card worked right out of the box with my SystemMax Venture PC running Ubuntu Linux version 8.04. I captured 16 bit video from my Sony Digital 8 camcorder model DCR-TRV350 as soon as I connected the 1394 cable powered up the camcorder and stated to play the taped video. I am using the Firewire cable that came with the StarTech PCI card.

Cons: I haven't seen any negative indications with this hardware as yet.

Other Thoughts: Pricing is excellent and the Firewire cable comes with the package. I will probably never use the Ulead VideoStudio 10SE software CD since the free software with Ubuntu Linux is so good.

Pros: The card works great!! Good price and great delivery time.

Cons: The software CD did not load to my PC. It may have just been the program or the CD was busted. I was able to use the default program from the PC to run the video downloads

Other Thoughts: I recommend just buying the card.

Pros: Very easy installation; a little bit of a tight fit in my Quicksilver PowerMac G4 tower, but didn't take more than two minutes to plug in.

Cons: 1) Doesn't seem to support FireWire networking in OS X Leopard 10.5.5.
2) FireWire ports are "unfinished" in the sense that they don't have caps rounding them off on the outside, which makes the board look like you built it yourself.

Other Thoughts: Works great with FireWire hard disks, but I was a little disappointed about the FireWire networking issue (hence the 4-star review instead of 5-star). My MacBook Pro reported that "No network-capable FireWire devices are connected" when connected to this card via a FireWire cable, whereas the card itself on my PowerMac G4 was able to see the network connection from the other side. When connecting the same FireWire cable to the built-in FireWire port on the PowerMac, FireWire networking became available immediately.

This is probably an issue with OS X's drivers and not the card itself, but be wary if you are buying this card specifically for FireWire networking in Leopard.

Pros: it does what I ask of it; no problems

Cons: no cons so far

Other Thoughts: its small, fit in tight space on your motherboard if you don't have lots of room.

Pros: Price,4 port and come with viedo editing program!

Cons: video editing software is not that great(just like windows movie maker) but it comes with it for only $20 so that is not a big deal!

Other Thoughts: Buy it if ur in need of a 1394 port...
