Pros: Neat little device. The ExpressCard slot has a springloaded 'click' mechanism, so the cards you insert are nice 'n secure.
Cons: Doesn't work with my Gigabyte P35-DS4 Rev2.1 Motherboard, on WinXP Pro or on Win7, in conjunction with my SoundBlaster X-Fi Notebook ExpressCard.
Upon installing it, the card doesn't seem to fit correctly in the PCI-E slot as you screw it into place. You need to fiddle around with the bracket to get both items to securely fasten up.
You have to mess with the included USB Header wire in order for it to connect to your motherboard (had to move the blocked pin to the end and rework the red wire to match the Mobo).
There's no sign of it being installed at all when connected. There are some LEDs but you have to have the case open to see them. My Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi gave it a 'green light' and a 'yellow light', the descriptions of which are only a small blurb on the product card you get.
I'm sure I wired the pins correctly (the Soundcard glows Blue when it's connected), but nothing was recognized.
Called Startech, they said to update the mobo BIOS. I did, it did not
Other Thoughts: The card comes also with an USB square peg jack on back in case you don't want to mess with the motherboard headers, but it does NOT come with an USB cable to connect from there to an available USB port, which would also require a hole to be made on the case or opening up a spot somewhere. Even using this does not guarantee results, though.
I had high hopes for this converter, as it would have saved me some coin. I will try to use another one from the existing ones for sale here, but I'll be returning it as soon as I'm done typing this.
There are no drivers for this device (no disc). It does include another bracket, for smaller cases than ATX.
I had read at another site's review that the person there successfully got it to work with that same soundcard, so I guess it's something to do with my Mobo, but even after calling Startech Tech support, and doing their recommendation of updating, it still does not work.
Buyer beware, you may have to RMA it on compatibility alone.
