2 out of 5 eggscheap... but...

Pros: The device is cheap, fairly small, and allows for port duplication. It comes with a different mounting bracket, just in case you need it.

Cons: Had to go to StarTech's website to get Win7 x64 drivers. I'm using this for an external drive dock. After installing it and wondering why my external drives were not being detected, I found out that there are jumpers that have to bet set to configure for either internal or external sata. Jumpers? That so takes me back to 1997. :) I guess it would be a downside that you can't use internal or external drives at the same time through this card.

The real problem though... the drivers just don't seem to be reliable. My computer blue screens almost once a day since I installed the card / drivers. When my system crashes, the culprit is si3531.sys (the driver for the card). StarTech support said they didn't have any newer drivers. They referred me to check with Silicon Image, who manufacture the chipset.

Other Thoughts: If Silicon Image has updated drivers that actually work, I'll consider upping my review a point. Otherwise, I'd say you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to previous review

Pros: Migrated to a new MB and OS smoothly. I'm running Win 7 64 so I grabbed the latest drivers and the install was easy. I'm not using this card as a boot drive.

Cons: Card went dead two days after a driver release from the manufacturer. Without alerting me, Windows Update had flagged the old driver as invalid and deactivated the card. It couldn't see it on multiple reboots. Finally got the new drivers and ran the installers. Presto, the card comes back!

Bad news at this point is that the card hangs at bios when a drive is inserted in the caddy. It will sit and wait for the drive to spin up forever. This is probably a drive setting and not the card's fault, as I have my backup drives set for easy swapping and not like normal hard drives.

Other Thoughts: Would have been nice if Win had let me know that the drivers needed updating before breaking the card.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well!

Pros: Have been using this device to run a removable drive caddy. It was installed easily next to a liquid cooled video card and it doesn't cause space problems.

Cons: A little difficult to get the SATA cable to fit because of my cramped case. Grammar error that shows on startup is annoying.

Other Thoughts: Haven't tried the eSATA port at this time.

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds updated drivers

Pros: I works like it should as long as it has the latest drivers.

Cons: I had to RMA the first one I bought to StarTech. After receiving the second it still did not work in either Vista or Win7. Drivers that come on the disc are not the most recent drivers. JMicron chipset. JMB36X. I had to google for the latest driver. JMicron chipsets are so buggie. As of this review the latest driver is v1.17.53.0 dated 11/23/2009.

Other Thoughts: After installing the latest driver, the external eSATA drive worked like it was supposed to. Before hand it would set the system to a crawl. After it had finished parsing the drive it still did not show up under My Computer. Once the new driver was installed everything worked great.

As a reminder to all of those that are thinking of purchasing this card. In order to utilize the eSATA you must first plug in the eSATA cable and then plug in the USB cable for power, otherwise, it will default to USB data transfer instead of SATA.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work on Snow Leopard

Pros: N/A

Cons: The specs said it ran on OSX, and I'm sure if i have leopard I wouldn't have an issue. I have Snow Leopard, and I contacted the manufacture, and they currently don't have any drivers for anything they make for snow leopard. I guess it's a common issue for most eSata manufactures have.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: Plugged right in, easy setup. Has been working flawlessly since Aug'09 as an external backup interface. Overall setup sustains > 65 MByte/sec avg for large transfers using regular SATA II drives and a boring WinXP box - the bottleneck appears to be the internal drive.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: Why does an eSATA adapter cost $40, but you can get SATA included with a $90 motherboard??

1 out of 5 eggsYOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Pros: NONE

Cons: DOA, harddrive spun up but did not show up in windows.....i know its not the drive because i have an adapter this was going to replace so i would have some protection for the drive and it works perfectly with the adapter.

Other Thoughts: you might get a good one out of every ten of these maybe.....lets just say you get what you pay for.....that being said, im going to get an ice e d0ck.
