4 out of 5 eggsPretty Decent

Pros: Simple, easy to use.

Cons: The software that it comes with "Grabbee" is whack but it shows up like any other video device in windows and you can use it with Virtualdub, VLC, etc.

Since I already had an audio interface I opted to get the video-only version to save some money but I constantly have AV sync issues with my recordings. I always have to go in with avidemux or mkvmerge and set the audio latency to fix it. And it varies from rip to rip. This is likely not a problem on the one with audio built-in.

Other Thoughts: If I knew then what I know now, I would have saved my money and went for the PCI-e one with the AV dongle cable that does HDMI/composite/component etc.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product -- Does as it says !!!

Pros: This unit was able to capture a camcorder and make it usable as a webcam. It nicely converted the composite input into a USB; Windows 7 and related applications detected the camcorder as a USB device without any problem, and with no drivers.

Cons: I did not test S video input, but I'm sure it will work well as composite. So far no Cons against this product !

Other Thoughts: It will be great to have a HDMI input to USB 3.0.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job!

Pros: Don't expect to get HD resolutions with this. If you're using this to record your VHS tapes or simply recording something, then it's perfect for your needs.

However, the 5-Egg rating only goes towards the device itself, not the complimentary software. See 'Cons' and 'Other Thoughts' for details on that.

But overall, it'll record video just the way you want, as long as you have good enough recording software. It'll perfectly match the quality and resolution for VHS tapes if you know how to make it work, which I will explain below.

Cons: There are only 2 real cons to this product:

1) The software this comes with is terrible. I guarantee that you will not enjoy the video you record with it, even if you tweak and tune the settings to "perfection".

2) It's somewhat of a pain to find appropriate software without guidance, of which the internet doesn't have much to offer. BUT don't worry, because there are free programs out there that work perfectly with it. Read the rest of my review for details.

Other Thoughts: Incinerate the software disc as soon as the box arrives. That is, unless you have no other alternatives.

If you already have high-tech recording software, then that's awesome. You're all set.
But if not, I recommend downloading and trying out different kinds of free video capturing software to see which one works best with your system.
After searching around, I've found that the free version of Debut Video Capture software offered by NCH works very well. You may have to tweak the settings a bit if you don't want any minor glitches on the video, but it still works very well on a Windows 7 64-bit OS. I can't speak for any other systems since I haven't tried it on them yet, but I'm sure there's little to no difference due to it being a pretty basic program.

Oh, and as a final note, make sure you have the proper drivers for this device on the system. You may want to double-check them to ensure the best video quality, even if your computer automatically downloaded and installed the

5 out of 5 eggsSimple... it works

Pros: I run a VHS transfer business with these devices... from new JVC VCR's to USB. I capture at 720x480 for DVD's. Got them hooked to XP and Vistas PC's. I use composite, and will try s-video soon to see if the quality is better.

Cons: The included software is odd and quirky... still does OK but looking for better.

5 out of 5 eggsdoes what it's supposed to do

Pros: Cheap and does what it's, well... supposed to do. I use it strictly as a "window" to watch my dtv converter box because my new monitor only has 2 dvi/hdmi ports and I can't use it as a monitor for just standard tv. I only watch a few shows and it does the job well enough. I send the audio from the tuner or like device to the audio card. Like I say, it works (for me) as stated.

Cons: Doesn't work with Linux. At least I haven't been able to find the right drivers for it and the website doesn't have them. No restricted/universe/multiverse for Ubuntu, for example. At least, I haven't found any. I am open to be proven wrong (I'd love to be proven wrong).

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great - simple to use!

Pros: Didn't bother with limited software on CD's, just got latest drivers from their web (look for a single setup file in zipped driver sub-directory), installed drivers first on W7 (can be seen via devices manager after you plug the device in USB2), using it with Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 at max res 720x480 making DVD compatible mpegs. Source is JVC Hi-Fi S-VHS HR-S2109U. Works fine ALL the time. Fast-good results-simple-bargain for the price.

Cons: Very weak or useless software applications...

Other Thoughts: Glad I ignored reviews from non-owners...

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: It works some of the time on one machine, locks up another machine when connected, and won't save input settings on another machine. It's just too unreliable for regular use.

Other Thoughts: We're purchasing another brand's capture device today.
