DAC only, no scaling
Pros: 1) Sturdy unit, 2) comes with multiple-country clip-on power interfaces for the power supply, 3) RGB side works great! 3) StarTech technical support was very helpful, and they did offer to prove a replacement unit in their lab before sending it to me on warranty.
Cons: 1) It does NOT scale: resolution-out MUST equal resolution-in. 2) It won't sync with older Component (YPbPr) TV sets and so will yield a visible (steady, colours) but unsynchronized (hashed and/or jumpy) picture. 3) It has now been proven to be a DAC-only/no-features device, I was expecting compatibility & “some” features. Conclusion: if it can't be used to convert HDMI to older component what exactly is the point of this product?
Other Thoughts: It took an RMA and 4 hours with tech support to find out it isn't compatible with my older (2000 and 2007) TV sets, likely because it doesn't scale, although there is no way to prove this hypothesis for certain. Tried 3 different HDMI sources (a-TV, AVR, and a laptop), 2 different TV sets on output, a whole lot of different resolutions, and more cables that I can remember - NONE worked. Conclusion: User adjustable scaling on output might have solved the problem, but then again maybe not. I still think there’s a sync and fundamental design issue, which is why I declined Startech’s offer to send me, yet another, device.
