5 out of 5 eggslinux

Pros: Works no problem in linux. Arch x86_64

Cons: See Other thoughts

Other Thoughts: Maxes out at about 80MB/s. When transfering files between two USB3 devices on the same card, one HDD reads at about 40MB/sec, the othre write at about 40MB/sec. I thought USB3 ports didn't share the bandwidth? Not sure exactly where the bottleneck is and how to fix it. Running Q9450 on Intel ICH10 and I'm 99% the NICs on this board are PCI-E. I ordered a PCI-E card so it will be fun to compare.

3 out of 5 eggscool but pointless

Pros: plug n play installation... allows me to use my USB3 external drives (kinda pointless going past USB2 in this machine - read the cons section).

Cons: PCI bus is a HUGE bottleneck that makes anything faster than 133mb/sec a waste of time.

Other Thoughts: In hind sight I have come to realize that any attempts to extend the life of this computer are a waste of time and money, because a new machine with 10x the power could be had for the cost of the parts to fix this old P4 (anything newer than a P4 would have PCI-express slots, and nullify my comments as they have greatly increased throughput).

5 out of 5 eggsWorks very well

Pros: Good stuff, just what I needed to speed up my backups.

Cons: If I recall, the PCI bus maxes out @ 133MB/s. Not a problem for me because my limiting factor is the 1Gbps network.

Other Thoughts: I have yet to hook up the power connector because my work computer has no spare molex on the PSU.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Experience

Pros: The card did double my external drive transfer speed as advertised (when it wasn't creating "Write Failed" errors).

Cons: The card intermittently and randomly caused Windows XP "Delayed Write Failed" errors (which never occur using my old USB 2.0 ports). Tech support was eratic and once took a week to get back to me (while other times responding in hours). They had me try several fixes (waisting my time) before admitting the card was probably defective. I returned the card.

Other Thoughts: I don't plan on buying another StarTech product haveing received this defective one and experiencing overall poor tech support.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: Installed in Windows XP Pro workstation without any problems

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Write speed to USB 2.0 external drive topped out at 20MB/sec. Write speed to same drive after installing this card was 45-49MB/sec.

2 out of 5 eggsDissatisfied

Pros: Works fine under Win7 64bit for drag and drop operations to external storage.

Easy to install.

Lifetime warranty and Support.

Cons: Compatibility issues with Shadow copy services (VSS) and Backup utilities.

Tech support advised I use USB2.0 connectivity and "wait until a patch is released"

Have not tried connectivity with any device other than External HDD.

Other Thoughts: Try something else if your need are for a USB3.0 hard drive connection.
