Add 4 Internal SATA III (6Gbps) ports to a computer through a PCI Express x2 slot. The PEXSAT34RH 4-Port PCI Express 2.0 SATA Controller Card with HyperDuo adds 4 AHCI SATA III ports to a computer through a PCIe slot (x2), delivering multiple internal 6Gbps connections for high-performance hard drives and Solid State Drives (SSDs).

Featuring HyperDuo technology, the SATA card offers SSD auto-tiering which lets you balance the performance advantages of SSD storage with the cost-effectiveness and large capacity of standard hard drives. By combining SSD and HDD drives into a single volume (up to 3 SSD + 1 HDD), HyperDuo discreetly works in the background to identify and move frequently accessed files to the faster SSD drive(s) for improved data throughput – up to 80% of SSD performance! (Note: The HyperDuo automatic storage tiering feature is compatible with Windows® XP, Vista, 7 and 8 only)

The PCIe SATA controller card supports Port Multiplier (PM), enabling multiple SATA drives to be connected to one port over a single cable, for a total of 7 drives (Up to 4 drives through PM on one port, and a single drive to the remaining 3 ports). Plus, the SATA controller card offers an effective hardware RAID solution, with native RAID (0, 1, 1+0) support.

5 out of 5 eggsBeats MB RAID

Pros: Better performance than Intel "fake" MB RAID (5.9 vs. 4.1) in RAID 1 configuration. The heatsink (in RAID 1 mode) barely gets warm. Driver support is at the BIOS level so no OS software drivers are required. Set up the drive configuration using the BIOS (there's a wizard to help with that) and the RAID array appears as a single drive to Windows. Installing a bootable Win7 on the RAID array is then no problem.

Cons: None really, but the documentation could be improved.

Other Thoughts: Plugs into a PCI express x2, x4, or x16 slot. Has header pins for optional activity indicator LEDs (5 total,1 for each drive plus 1 for all drives).

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Provides 4 SATA 3 connections to a P35 motherboard. Although Windows has not been tried, BIOS and Linux Mint fully support this card.

Cons: Will not support a boot drive. Not really a con as it was not expected.

Other Thoughts: Of the 4 drives connected to this card, 4 could be read from and 3 could be written to. The failing drive had to be reformatted before it could be written to.

1 out of 5 eggsRevised review for Linux

Pros: It will mount and read devices reliably, but see below

Cons: Apologies to anyone who acted on my review, here's what I found with more time.
It installs fine, mounts drives OK, but any media it mounts under Linux is only reliable for reading. This applies to hard drives and dvd/cd writers.
I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 onto it and the install consistently stopped about 1/2 way through with a message about possible bad media. I also tried burning a cd and a dvd connected thru this card and in all cases it reported insufficient space on the empty disc. It will however successfully read media.
Connecting the hard drive and dvd writer I mention above to the native SATA ports on my mobo and repeating the tests resulted in perfect behavior.
Too bad, I really wanted to like this product, now I will RMA.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Linux

Pros: 4x SATA 6 for $100, and I got a 20% discount taking it to $80.
Plugged it in and it worked, no messing with drivers.
Works with Linux.

Cons: None after 2 days and some testing

Other Thoughts: I called Startech about this card and they confirmed it works with Linux, and sure enough it actually does.
