5 out of 5 eggsgreat HDMI capture

Pros: Do download latest driver and editing software from StarTech.com site. It works great for 1080i and 1080p capture and it writes M2TS files, which edit great in Adobe premiere and after effects.

Cons: You have to buy extra HDMI cable to using in pass through mode.

1 out of 5 eggsAwful software

Pros: Tech supt people are nice. The device captured from VHS but only with outdated rendering engines so quality was poor.

Cons: The capture software they Require you to use is junk and the product only works 'with their software'. Written by KWorld the software would crash when I changed to the most current rendering format, EVR, the older ones are VMR7 & VMR9 from XP. How do I know it is written by KWorld? Select EVR in the settings and the software crashes with an error, the programmer can't spell Refresh, instead they coded it 'ReFlesh' the screen & the software crashed. Confirmed by tech supt.

Other Thoughts: This is the same box made by Diamond as the GC1000, chipset also by Fujitsu. Another program would partially recognize the device, but not let you use or capture with it.
If they could write their driver so it would work with other software, it could be a great selling product.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: It did not work initially, StarTech's support sent me a newer driver which resolved the problem. StarTech's support responded in a fairly prompt timely manner.

Cons: The user manual is rather sparse, there are some unexplained settings. It comes with Viva Station software which is a very basic capture program, but it works well. Also included are two pieces of Cyberlink software which are totally useless. The Cyberlink software when you run and try and do anything with it immediately it wants you to upgrade for a fee $$$. The worst part is the Cyberlink software does not work with the device at all. Either include versions of the Cyberlink s/w that works with the device or dump it.

Other Thoughts: If you connect the HDMI input to something that uses HDCP encryption, the video is displayed and passed through but the record button is disabled.

I would have given it 5 eggs if not for the Cyberlink software.

1 out of 5 eggsDriver Crashes XP 32-bit

Pros: If the driver didn't crash the computer it would be a decent capture box.

Cons: It ran OK for about 3 days and then started crashing the computer. I can't even boot my PC with this plugged in.

There is no uninstaller for the USB driver on the CD, and the driver cannot be seen to uninstall in hardware manager with the USBHDCAP unplugged. I can't plug it in because it crashes my computer instantly. Likewise, driver updates cannot be installed because the installer will not run unless the USB2HDCAP is plugged in.

The unit supposedly has hardware capture for AVI, MPEG, WMV, and Apple formats. This is incorrect. It captures in MTS format only and then you have to run a conversion utility that is rather slow to get what you want. The conversion utility is stripped down and you have to pay extra money if you want all the HD formats.

Last: this goes in-line between the video source and monitor. It only captures and cannot be used to play back videos to the monitor. That is not exactly what I expected.

Other Thoughts: I'm returning mine.
