2 out of 5 eggsWorks but very inconsistent

Pros: It does eventually work once you get everything recognized properly. No issues with this adapter outside of getting all three monitors recognized any time I go from the monitors being turned off in power save mode, sleep or fresh boots. Basically anytime I'm not actually using it and I need to get everything going again. I gave this product 2 eggs because for the most part, it does work. To me, one eggs are reserved for things that don't actually do what they say they'll do.

Cons: A lot of difficulty getting all 3 monitors to get recognized consistently. Sometimes I'll come back to my desk and bring the machine online out of sleep and everything is recognized. Sometimes one monitor won't be on. Sometimes none of them are on. It took me quite a few frustrating trail and error methods to get a process down where I could get back to working within a few minutes.

Definitely not an adapter where you can just plug it in, attach the Surface Dock cable and be up and running. It recognizes all 3 monitors maybe every 1/5 times where I don't have to hit the sync button at all. These moments are causes for celebrations, which is a little sad.

Other Thoughts: I use this with my Surface Book connected to the standard Surface Dock so I can support 3 monitors. I would not recommend this adapter to support this setup. Other people at my work have much better results by using the 2 native mini display ports with an extra USB 3.0 video adapter as the 3rd monitor.

The best procedure I've been able to work out so far to get all three monitors to be recognized:

-Start from a cold boot with Surface connected to dock
-Open Surface book, make sure it's at the login screen
-Close Surface book, press the "Sync" button on the StarTech adapter
-Login screen should show on your external monitor. Login.

DO NOT login to the surface book with the surface book open. Make sure you do this with the external display. Otherwise your applications will scale incorrectly and you'll need to logout/login to correct this.

Sometimes after this one of the monitors won't be on. I can't tell at the login screen because windows doesn't show content on all the screens until you've past the login screen. Anyway, if I hit "Sync" again, that usually does the trick to get them all recognized if one doesn't yet show anything. If I get up and leave my machine, causing it to auto-shutoff the monitors, I start from step 2 on the list above. (i.e. exclude the cold boot, just get it out of sleep and at the login window)

1 out of 5 eggsIsn't working with Surface Pro 3

Pros: - There are no pros for this product if it literally will not do it's one intended purpose.

Cons: - I bought this so I can use two external monitors along with the Surface Pro tablet for 3 total screens. I'm using the Surface pro docking station, this hub, and two display port to DVI adapters. Windows 10 is fully updated. If I plug a single monitor in then it works great but as soon as I plug the 2nd monitor in then both external monitors stop working. I've tried each monitor/adapter separately and they each work on their own but neither work when both plugged in. What's the point of this hub if it breaks the moment a 2nd monitor is plugged in?

Manufacturer Response:

Thanks for taking the time to review our MSTMDP123DP Hub. We appreciate the time you have taken and would like to assist.

You mentioned you're using the MSTMDP123DP with your Microsoft Surface Pro 3. We wanted to reassure you that we have done extensive testing and development with this hub specifically with the Surface line. Therefore, using these products together should not be an problem.

One suggestion however, is to check with Microsoft and Intel to ensure you are using the latest Surface Pro 3 firmware as well as the most up to date Intel display drivers directly from Intel.

You also mention the use of DisplayPort to DVI adapters. Do you know if these adapters are passive or active? Although active adapters may work, passive adapters will provide a more consistent experience when using the MST hub with a Microsoft Surface. An example of an active adapter is the DP2DVIS, and an example of a passive adapter is the DP2DVI2.

We hope this has been helpful. Should you require any further assistance, please contact our customer service team via the link found below.

Thank You,

1 out of 5 eggsVery Problematic

Pros: 1 to 3 mini displayport to displayport

Cons: Does not work, multiple issues, have to constantly reset it. For something at this price point, I expected it to at least consistently work.

Other Thoughts: Very disappointed in the product, worked well for a few weeks then began having more and more issues, needing to be reset, plugged and unplugged, until finally it doesnt work even with a single displayport plugged into it, and causes issue with anything else plugged into computer.

1 out of 5 eggsuseless on Macs

Pros: Works with Windows just fine.

Cons: With OS X you can not use multiple displays, everything you plug in will be displayed in mirrored mode. This isn't something you discover until after you purchase which is why it gets 1 egg.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this if you use OS X and need multiple displays not in mirrored mode.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Brian,

Thanks for taking the time to review our MSTMDP123DP Mini DisplayPort Hub. We wanted to reach out to you and offer some clarification around the use of this hub with Apple computers.

Unfortunately, MST functionality is not supported on Mac computers. Without this, you will be unable to achieve extended displays, and depending on the model or OS of your Mac device, may not see any images at all.

We do have another solution if you are trying to extend your desktop to two or three displays. We recommend using one of our USB video adapters. For example, our USB32DPPRO adapter is supported on Mac computers up to OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). Additionally, you can install up to five adapters on one computer as long as the Mac device meets the required specifications. You can find that device here:

If you have any further questions regarding this product or any of the other options available to you, please contact us directly.

Thank You,

Customer Support

5 out of 5 eggs3 HD Displays off My Surface Pro 3!

Pros: Allows the hookup of 3 HD displays to a Surface Pro 3 through the single Mini-Display port.
Works with Displayport to HDMI adapters.
When Plugged in, you can configure using the Windows Screen Resolution Control panel. Windows remembers your setup; when you unplug it all goes back to the SP3 display, when replugged, it takes a moment and then returns you back to your multidisplay setup.

Cons: The Connector is a little short and on the SP3, the Mini-Display port is on the upper right of the tablet, so it dangles when connected.

I have had the device lock up my displays if I tried to enable all 4 displays; you need to be careful and ensure you don't try to enable all 4 displays.

The Windows Resolution Control Panel doesn't report the on screen identification properly, so you need to do a little guessing as to which monitor you are positioning.

Other Thoughts: Startech sent me this product to give them an honest review. It's an excellent accessory. It's nice to be able to drive 3 HD displays from my Surface Pro 3. Typically I use 2 out of the three ports, since I require the use of my SP3's touch screen for development. My monitors are a mix of 2 Dell's and an LG. I have used other non-HD monitors with this, and all the configurations worked.
None of my monitors have Displayport ports, so I had to use 3 DisplayPort to DVI converters, and there's no problem using them.
The only caution is setup can be a little tricky at first, but once setup, I've not encountered any issues.

5 out of 5 eggsThey work great

Pros: They do the job well. Love the available bandwidth of DisplayPort. Showing 71% usage with 3 1920x1200 monitors attached to one of them.

Cons: I have two of these and, it's pretty rare but, sometimes one won't light up. I hardly ever power-off/reboot, however, so no big deal to me. It's as simple as just rebooting again. (again this is pretty uncommon, and from what I understand they have a fix for it, I just haven't noticed it enough to be bothered with it).

Other Thoughts: Would recommend if you truly need mini-dp. Don't use adapters like I tried at first with a standard displayport size (on the input side).

1 out of 5 eggsRun away

Pros: None

Cons: This unit is extremely inconsistent. We had to plug the unit into the PC, then one cable at a time into the unit.. if we were lucky it might work properly in Windows 8.1 -- however if you then unplug it (to say go to a meeting) and come back, you have to unplug all your cables from the unit, and go through this process again, again with no surety that the displays would even come up as expected.

Other Thoughts: not worth it

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Tialen,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on our MSTMDP123DP hub. We are sorry to hear it is not performing as expected and would like to help.
