4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Newegg customer service is tops! First unit was DOA, returned and replaced immediately by the egg. Replacement card works as it should. My daisy-chained Lexar CF card readers are back in business. And fast!

Cons: Had to wait to finish my build but all works as required now. My first impression of the card - looked poorly made, ports not square and even. Replacement card looked much better than the first.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a Champ (So far!)

Pros: Windows 7 recognized it right away!

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I have a box load of old Digital 8 home videos and an old Sony camcorder (DCR-TRV-240) and my current motherboard (Asus P8Z77-V) has no firewire. Windows 7 will not recognize the camcorder via the USB connection. So I got this Rosewill Card and the camera was found right away and I'm able to capture video using Roxio Creator 2011. So far so good!

4 out of 5 eggsNice for firewire

Pros: Install was straight forward. Windows 7 recognized it without an issue. CentOS as well. Top speeds for firewire. One thing I'll say is once you hit your transfer speeds it does not vary like USB 2.0/3.0.

Cons: I don't really use firewire anymore so not a ton of uses for me.

Other Thoughts: I had to pull some old devices out of retirement to test this, but surely didn't want to pass up the first internal computer component offered through the EggXpert review. I didn't have anything as far as newer firewire components to test with though. I'd love to be more enthusiastic, but this is just old technology.

5 out of 5 eggsFun for fervid firewire fans

Pros: If you're still using FireWire, there's a lot to like here. I'm very cross platform and I have several bus powered Firewire drives that I utilize in both Windows and Mac OS. This card accommodates my desktop PC perfectly. It's about as fast as you'd expect from Firewire, write speed was about 50 MB/sec from a 3 year old drive. It also has both the 800 and 400 spec ports, which is accommodating. Installation is straightforward, and it looks like a quality component. Windows 7 recognized the device right away.

Cons: As others have pointed out, it does have a molex connector. Not my favorite method of power-delivery. The card also lacks a header for a front-facing port, so look elsewhere if you need to accommodate that.

Other Thoughts: For those of us who still use Firewire, this is an easy way to hang on to a disappearing technology. I still find that Firewire is the best when it comes to bus-powered external drives. Depending on the hard drive installed, they are more responsive than USB hard drives, including the dual corded drives. The ability to daisy chain them is also pretty nice. The 800 spec is still competitive in terms of speed. As a guy with a lot of bus powered drives, I really appreciated this card and found it a great way to keep my devices in service.

4 out of 5 eggsGood card that installs without a hitch

Pros: I added this card to a custom built box that’s in a NAS chassis form factor case. Given this they included a small form factor bracket in the box which was helpful! I’m running Windows Storage Server 2012 on the NAS and it found the driver immediately. I didn’t have to search around for it or figure out how to get a CD image onto my system. It runs as expected. I have a few firewire hard drives around and it gave me max performance of the drives.

Cons: I didn’t find any. The install was easy and it worked straight out of the box.

Other Thoughts: Firewire is becoming dated so this is only going to be useful for the times that I need to get items off my old storage onto my NAS. It’s still worth adding in just to be sure I can get any medium to the system. Packaging was simple and it came with everything I needed to be up and running. You have to attach a Molex power connector to it but as it’s rare to use them anymore I had a couple spare.

5 out of 5 eggsNice and Fiery!

Pros: Nice small box, just the basics can be found inside the box. I think it is smart on the MFGs part to just include what is needed with no added fluff. Also, having said that, there is a half-height bracket if you have a SFF (small form factor) computer that you will be using the card with you will be good to go as well! REALLY nice that they include it, there are some component cards that I have bought that do not come with which can make for a bad day if you are running a SFF computer!

There is a good chipset on this card and it was a PnP (plug and play) (aka, Plug and Pray) affair for me. No issues what so ever, this was on a Server 2008 box. After the card installed I was able to plug in my WD externals with no problem. The tests that I performed were utilizing the 800 ports. I'm sure the other ports work fine, just didn't need to use them. Using the 800 port I was seeing around 60MB/sec (writing) which is way faster than USB 2.0 but not quite as fast as USB3.0. I bet you could see about 15-25 more MB/sec with USB3.0. Now, having said that, I was getting around 35 (or so) MB/sec READ speed and USB3.0 will be WAY faster than that!

Cons: The only real "con" that I can think of is that this card requires a 4-pin MOLEX connector, so make sure that you have one available on your power supply. No included cables of any kind, so make sure that you have the correct stuff for what you will be connecting.

Other Thoughts: If you still have some FireWire junk lying around, you'll want this card. It has a good proven chipset, that will PnP and run cool. If you DO NOT have any devices that will support this, or if you are looking into running some kind of external device for backup you really are better off purchasing something that will use USB3.0. The speeds are much better and you have more compatibility if you need it. Where with FireWire, unless all your computers have the proper port, you are pretty much out of luck... I also want to note, that I installed this in PCIe x16 slot and there were no issues. I've had good luck with the Rosewill brand and I would have no problem buying this if you are on the fence. Even with me being a EggExpert reviewer, I want people to know what is going to work, how intuitive a product is and that it is a value, because at the end of the day that is all one can ask for! I look forward to continued good service out of this product and feel that it is a great deal!

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect

Pros: - Easy to install
- I had to uninstall my firewire 400 to make space for this PCI card, but this has both firewire 800 and 400, which is a plus.

Cons: Transfer speed is advertised as 100Mbps to 800Mbps, but the highest I've gotten is 70Mbps, but that could be because of my system.

Other Thoughts: None.
