4 out of 5 eggsGets the job done

Pros: - Reasonably priced
- No waste in packaging
- Compatible with low-profile form factor cases
- Includes instructions that are actually viable
- PCI-E x1 interface allows versatility in installation

Cons: - No driver for Windows 8 64-bit
- There's a model for a few dollars more that claims to be Windows 8 compatible -- and has a pair of serial ports

Other Thoughts: Not a lot going on here. Sturdy construction on a simple serial card. Newegg specifications claim Windows 8 compatibility -- not accurate. One of the few reviews points this out, and it was from more than a year ago...time to update that product page.

Both of my machines are Windows 8 64-bit boxes, so I through together a quick and dirty Windows 7 64-bit test bed. Tested multiple install methods (included disc, driver download from site) -- all worked without a hitch. Today's PCI/PCI-E devices are generally more attractive affairs that blend in nicely with pretty mobos, clean cabling, and blingy video cards. Not the RC-300E. Exposed grey ribbon cable is about as good as it gets. Just functional, utilitarian basics going on here, and most likely not a device that somebody would have installed inside a fancy gaming machine.

Not sure how many consumer serial devices are really out there these days. I only own one device with a serial connection, but it's a great one to pair up with this unit -- an APC UPS. The APC came with software and settings that could be accessed over a serial line -- but I've never been able to use those features due to me running gaming mobos that long ago stopped providing PCI slots for optional serial brackets. I have plenty of open PCI-E x1 slots on this test bed, so I finally get to see if APC software can do it's thing. Installed the APC software, shut things down, connected the serial cable, powered backup -- we're in business. went ahead and played around with the APC shutdown settings, as well as a variety of power readings and logs, all of which were picked up over the serial connection as expected.

Outside of a UPS, I'm not sure how many people are really in need of a serial device these days, with most every interface having moved to USB, but regardless of that, if you are in the market for a sturdy serial card with versatile installation options, that doesn't bust your wallet (one would hope not, as they used to basically give these things away with mobo load outs) -- the RC-300E will do the job nicely. Just make sure you're not running Windows 8, as the card has been out long enough now, that if they were going to release a Win8 driver, well -- it would have already happened.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card

Pros: This card is an excellent solution for Windows 7 PCs. Comes with a low profile bracket as well for smaller form factor systems. Included drivers worked with Windows 7.

Though I didn't need the smaller bracket, I switched out the plate just to see how difficult it would be. It's a simple matter of removing two screws and unplugging a ribbon cable connector, attaching the different bracket with the two screws and then plugging the cable back in. A very simple switch.

This card will make its final home in my wife's workstation that she uses for architecture (Revit mostly). She is a MAJOR USB port monopolizer. She has wireless keyboard, mouse, a phone dock, tablet dock, three external hard drives, two iPods (one for exercise and one for the car), and some other weird gadgets like a drawing pad or some such. Anyway...the USB ports on her computer are sacred...so the chance to use this card with her UPS instead of a USB cable was a no-brainer.

The CyberPower links up with the UPS software through the serial port perfectly. I pulled the plug and the software immediately began the process of shutting the computer down to save data and protect from any kind of corruption as it is supposed to do.

Cons: No cons that I came across.

Other Thoughts: It would appear that this card does not support Windows 8. Even though no computers in my home have Windows 8 I could see this being a problem for other users. Be sure to contact Rosewill before purchasing if buying for Windows 8 and they should be able to recommend the proper device. Though I did not contact Rosewill's support for this particular product I have contacted them in the past with questions and concerns on power supplies and card readers and they have always been very prompt and helpful.

5 out of 5 eggsRC-300E

Pros: Product works as decribed in a Windows 7 64 Bit computer. Will post back after running in a business setup 24 x 7.

Cons: Shipping policy of Newegg which I have complained many times. Select next day and rush just to recieve the package on the second day and not the next day. Should simply have a cutoff time or state package will not reach for next day when choosing the shipping method. I have ordered from other supply place since they will have it to me next day.

4 out of 5 eggsI wish motherboards would still have io connectors

Pros: Worked fine in old windows server 2003 32bit
faceplate to accomodate low profile systems

Cons: Rosewill doesn't list on their specs which chipset its using
costs just as much as 2 port version

Other Thoughts: If you need a low profile card get this otherwise the 2 port version costs just as much

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 8 (64 bit) not supported

Pros: From other comments, this appears to be a good card for Windows 7.

Cons: Just a warning to others. I recommended this card to someone running Windows 8 and it turns out that the product description is not correct, Windows 8 is not supported. This was confirmed with the manufacturer. Newegg is aware and should really change the description to reflect this fact. There is a different card by this manufacturer that does have Windows 8 driver. I believe it is a 2 port card and costs $5 more. Well worth the money if you want to avoid the frustrations on Windows 8.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks ok

Pros: Installed easily, and no problem with drivers for Win 7 64 bit supplied on the CD. Appears to be a well made product as well

Cons: Won't work properly with my US Robotics 56K fax hardware modem. Hangs halfway through the initialization string, yet works perfectly with a regular serial port on Win XP with the same settings. So something is different with this serial port.

Other Thoughts: Perhaps a bit more fiddling will get it to work. If I can't it will have been a waste of money at least for me. Hopefully it will work in the future with other serial port applications.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfectly

Pros: For Windows 7 64-bit, GTCO Roll-Up II digitizer. This worked perfectly as advertised. No more USB to Serial adapters to go on the fritz.

Cons: Wish I installed this sooner.
