4 out of 5 eggsGood single purpose device

Pros: This is a very simple way to bring composite video into a PC and into a video file. It has worked very well with my Windows XP Pro installation. I've only had the software crash twice in the years I've used it. This is the second version of the product I've owned.

Cons: The Capture wizard is limited. It really only captures and converts the stream to video that's it. Yes, this device isn't supported by other software that I have found. For the price this is a decent little unit for basic video to digital conversion. If you are looking for more of an editing solution, I'd look elsewhere.

Other Thoughts: I like this product. I've preserved about 20 VHS tapes for myself and about another 10 for friends.

3 out of 5 eggsMixed Performance

Pros: Produces clean, noiseless video--as long as no other load is attached in parallel. Once the system is running it converts cleanly.

Cons: XP & Vista ONLY. No drivers available for W2K prof. None of my video editors (Nero, Intervideo, Power Director) , including Windows Movie Maker will operate the device. Usually the program crashes.
The provided software will not enable the device unless the SETTINGS option is selected in the setup menu. It would be very helpful to use other programs beside Video Express's!

Other Thoughts: My PC is a homebuilt with micro ATX ASUS mobo, Pent 4 1333FSB, 2GB ram and a 1TB SATA HDD.

2 out of 5 eggsADS VideoExpress

Pros: I don't know. I couldn't get it to work.

Cons: The capture and edit software is garbage, and the only program that would even grab video from the device was the executable "video grabber", which was only a test program and could not save anything. The CapWiz program, which is supposed to save the captured video, gave me errors after 3 installations. I'm returning this once I contact Newegg for an RMA number.

1 out of 5 eggsVery efficient for its price. Quality product.

Pros: -Records in every single TV format, such at NTSC, PAL, SECAM (and their different sub forms)
-High quality video with S-video, or with composite video
-Easy to use, after it's installed, it works just like a normal webcam
-VERY small device, saves space

Cons: -The Muvee software is somewhat aggravating
-When in use with live video streaming website, it loses the correct aspect ratio and shows only a small portion of the screen

Other Thoughts: This is an amazing product by my standards. It does everything I've ever wanted in a video capture device. I use it to make live recordings/broadcasts of my video games and TV shows, and it has brought me much joy in the ability to use my computer as a supersized DVR box. There are many settings you can change with the device such as sharpness, color, and brightness, very easy to understand. The only bad side of this product is that the muvee software included in the package seems to be useless as far as I can tell...mostly only for editing rather than actual recording of video and pictures.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks good for me

Pros: Mine worked just fine right out of the box. For the price, this is a good buy. I really was not looking for a broadcast quality, all I want to do is take a pile of my old lower resolution VHS tapes and get them on my PC. Like any video capture device, you need a bit of horsepower on your PC. Don't try this with the old clunker with 256Mb of RAM. It can't be more simple to operate, just connect the outputs of your VCR to the inputs, and plug the USB into your XP machine. Launch the software and you'll see the image and hear the sound. Click on the CAPTURE button and you're off. But don't run any other programs on your PC at the same time. There are better capture devices -- if you want the best, you want one which captures via firewire, but this one is good for a lower end capture device.

Cons: The ADS software shipped with the unit isn't the best and only captures in MPEG2 without any other options. But there are any number of editing and conversions for MPEG, so not all is lost.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Tech support was great!

Cons: Product doesn't work on Vista or XP even after multiple driver updates, reinstalls & tech support.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully mine was just a dud and tech. support was very honest and helpful to all of their ability but product would not get movies off my camcorder on any system.

2 out of 5 eggsLooks great...but doesn't work...

Pros: Great price
Nice features
Software seems easy to use

Cons: Didn't work for me!
Their support folks didn't know much more than I figured out.

Other Thoughts: From the reviews I read this is a good product. It is priced well and comes with some simple setup instructions. I was purchasing this to try and capture some older mini-VHS tape video onto a AVI file and then burn to a DVD.

My first install round didn't work as the drivers it shipped with didn't work on Vista. I downloaded their latest Vista drivers and got a bit farther. When I ran the capture software I then got some odd "no pins found" error and never got it to see my video. I tried on a second PC I had (different setup\hardware but running Vista OS) and had the SAME problem. According to their info it should run on Vista without issue.

I opened a support ticket and they replied with a question asking me what video card I had then proceeded to close my ticket. I opened a second one for them to reply and say they don't know what the error is and it works fine for them. :) I am forced to RMA this now since they are no help and I can't figure it out...

1 out of 5 eggsBad

Pros: none

Cons: I could not capture any video from my camcorder. The Wizard and the othe software are probably to blame but it just would not work properly. If you want something that works I suggest the DVD Express version of ADS.

Other Thoughts: I am returning this product now.
