5 out of 5 eggsEasy in; so far, so good

Pros: Data cable from front-facing external plate to USB3 header on the PCIe card has generous length: sufficient length to reach diagonally across my big, clunky DELL box.

Drivers from CD included in package worked first time.

I can now transfer 80MB/sec to an external Western Digital USB3.0 drive. (I think the bottleneck is that my PCIe slot, while 2nd Gen, is only running 1 lane. Maybe it's the WD. Whatever, I'm still VERY satisfied with that improvement in speed. Just went and ordered some USB3 flash drives so that I can sneakernet my movies to the living room that much faster.... )

Cons: Front of box has two different model numbers printed on it: SST-EC03-P and SST-EC03B-P. Neither one is a sticker. I used the SST-EC03 drivers from the provided CD first time and they worked, so I guess I'm glad I wasn't paying super-close attention, or I would have picked the driver setup for the EC03B.

So, not a con for me, really? Guess I got lucky.

Other Thoughts: Thanks to Newegg reviews, I knew to install the drivers before the hardware. Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their installation experiences.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello and thank you for your interests in SilverStone Products,

We are excited to hear that you are enjoying the performance increase that you are getting out of the EC03B-P adapter. We simply wanted to address the issue with models numbers that you were stating in your 'Cons' section. The EC03-P and EC03B-P are the same product, the B only signifies the color of the unit's included 3.5" front bay adapter, so the driver set that you had installed will not have any issues. Alternatively, if you ever happen to lose the CD or need updated drivers, we supply them to you on our website under the EC03B-P product information.

You can find the product information and drivers here:

Best Regards,
SilverStone Tek USA.

5 out of 5 eggsSuits the need

Pros: does what I need it to do

Cons: one minor gripe.....
Molex connector. It should be a SATA power connector.

Other Thoughts: So I got this because I needed another USB 3.0 Header. I have an FT01 case that I upgraded to USB 3.0 and my Asus Maximus IV Hero only had one USB 3.0 Header. Just plug it into an open slot and connect a Molex and your USB plug. done.

3 out of 5 eggsManufacturers Downloads

Pros: Still a great card. No issues like other negative statements. Running on a Maximus II Formula MB.

Cons: Don't even think about using the drivers from the Silverstone web site. I looked at the rev levels shown on the web site and immediately downloaded the highest rev level and installed it. I then uninstalled the driver I'd been using and installed the new one, ... dead! Thank goodness for System Restore!

1 out of 5 eggsCard Failed Twice

Pros: Comes with 3.5" front panel USB 3.0 IO connector panel.

Cons: This PCI Express Card USB 3.0 adapter failed sometime after installation in early 2013. RMA'd the failed adapter and received a replacement in 2013-04. This card failed again after attaching a Seagate GoFlex external disk drive. This Seagate drive works with no problems on my three other PCs with USB 3.0 ports. Cut loses and ordered a different brand card (same Renesas chip) that works with no problems.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Card for the Money

Pros: This particular card has the updated Renesas USB 3.0 controller and it actually outperformed the native USB controller on my motherboard (an Asus P8B75-M LX Plus). At least on the tests that I did, the Renesas was about 10 to 15% faster than the ASUS controller, regardless of the USB input device tested, cable orientation or rear vs. front motherboard ports vs. headers. It may be that the ASUS controller together with the Asus USB speed boost is specifically designed for a particular OS or device that I was not using. In any event, the Renesas chip is really excellent.

Cons: None. This turned out to be a really good USB 3.0 card that also includes USB 3.0 drivers for Windows Xp, as well as Windows 7 and 8.

4 out of 5 eggsThe Instructions Suck

Pros: The combination of the PCIe card and the front panel sockets is a great adaption to upgrade to USB 3.0. The driver disc was helpful also. But see my "Cons".

Cons: As the title implies, the directions suck. First problem, the "Assembly Steps" can only be found on the driver disc; second problem, the 4th step of the "Assembly Instructions" (install the "sockets" on the drive adapter plate ....) should be first (there's no way to do it with the adapter plate installed in your case); third problem, nothing tells you it won't work without the 5 volt power plugged in; and last of all (and I may be showing my ignorance here) nothing works if the drivers aren't installed before the card is installed. I even had to use the "Repair Windows 7" utility on the Windows 7 Installation Disc.

Other Thoughts: After going through all the "revised steps" resulting from the problems I encountered in the Cons the card and sockets work great and I now don't have to lift my keyboard drawer over USB drives sticking out of the top of my full size tower case.

5 out of 5 eggsgood choice for custom installation

Pros: Lends itself to custom installations where card space is a problem such as a gateway zx4951 all-in-one system. Fast. Linux recognized immediately. Win7 required drivers that are available online. The 20 pin cable is about 18 inches long.

Cons: Wish somebody would make a super low profile pci usb 3 card. This card like all others is about 3/4 of an inch too tall for an all-in-one so had to use a riser card adapter with custom made bracket.

Other Thoughts: Used in combination with a startech pci riser card left slot adapter (expensive item) and a custom made bracket to hold the card in place. Mounted the usb ports on the outside edge just above the existing audio/usb2.0 jacks. Cut out access on the edge of the back plastic panel with a dremel rotary tool. A real pain in the a... to upgrade an all-in-one. Cost me about 75 in total for the upgrade, but file transfers are much faster.

1 out of 5 eggsFails to do what I needed!!

Pros: Fast data tranfers within Windows 7. Metal front panel matches my SilverSone case.

Cons: Poor contruction: USB connectors on the front panel are held by a single center screw and the USB connectors move when you plug in a device. The 20-pin header does not seat fully and can fall out of the PCIe card connector on the PCIe card. This card will not boot any of the USB 3.0 devices I have tried, my other systems with built-in USB 3.0 have no problems booting all my USB 3.0 devices. Devices connected to this unit are not visible in BIOS or UEFI motherboards.

Other Thoughts: I have used SilverStone cases in my systems and I was expecting better quality. This card a ppears to a re-branded Teratrend TA03 USB 3.0 PCIe Card. Purchased at another online store.

5 out of 5 eggsdoes what I needed

Pros: Allowed me to add USB 3.0 to the front of my wife,s computer.

Cons: More expensive than I wanted to pay.

Other Thoughts: It does exactly what it should. Transfer speeds to an external harddrive were good. Much faster than USB 2.
