Silverstone SST-EC04-P PCI-E to USB 3.0 Add-On Card

Introduction

SilverStone created an excellent extension card product, the EC04-P, which connects to the motherboard via single lane PCI Express 2.0. It supports two external and one dual port USB 3.0 connector for maximum compatibility and flexibility. This card is a great add-on for systems that require connections to multiple USB 3.0 devices such as SilverStone's own USB 3.0 enclosures RVS02 and TS07.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent once you find the drivers

Pros: cheap
fast speeds
free shipping

Cons: I don't use the disc. it's nothing personal, I just don't have time. the driver is not lost, but buried within a slew of drivers. I picked out the model from the company website. no worries. this is the second card I've purchased with the old one simply not working simply any more.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this and the driver that was installed, made the card work simply by plugging into the motherboard. this card drives a 5 port 2 1/2 faceplate port. remember if your faceplate has a fast charge port l, that you plug in the Xtra power so that your fast port charges quickly.

4 out of 5 eggsDriver issues...

Pros: Works good...once you find a driver for it.

Cons: CD driver disk that comes with the card has no driver on it that supports Win 7 64 bit that I could find. Drivers on CD are not tagged for what OS system they support...totally guess work.

Other Thoughts: Once I exhausted the possibilities on the driver CD, I went to their website and eventually found the driver and it worked fine, but be aware that the model number in not SST-EC04-P as is listed on the product (support search doesn't recognize that at all)...it's just: EC04-P.

Gotta take an egg for the bonehead driver support...they could and should do better on that.

BAM it installed .Hope this helps

5 out of 5 eggsSolid So Far

Pros: * Works transparently with Linux. No special driver-hunt needed.
* Good price-point
* Functions as advertised in the specs.
+ Transfer speed are per spec.
+ Supports all USB versions
+ Internal port is indeed 19-pin, but will also support 20-pin headers.

Cons: I've encountered none to date.

Other Thoughts: I have the internal port connected to a BitFenix BFA-U3-K235-RP Front Panel Dual USB3.0 Bay.
I also have the power-connector plugged in. Note that this power connector is a 4-pin MOLEX, so if your supply has only [or mainly] SATA-power plugs, you'll need an adapter.

1 out of 5 eggsMostly dead.

Pros: So far, none.

Cons: Back ports seem to operate only in USB2. Front ports throw error messages for USB2 devices and do not detect USB3 devices at all.

Other Thoughts: I have tried the drivers that came with the card and the latest drivers on the support web page. Same results with either. I have sent an email to support@silverstonetec.com. I'll give them three day to reply. If I don't hear from them, or if it isn't working in a week, Newegg gets it back.

Days like this are why I buy from Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive!

Pros: Blazing speed over USB2.0. Easily installed.

Cons: Driver and software setup, but with a little research this is easily overcome.

Other Thoughts: I recently repackaged my computer into a new case and purchased this card to upgrade my Socket 775 motherboard to USB 3.0 in order to take advantage of the two USB 3.0 case mounted ports.
I followed the installation instructions to load the Windows 7, 32-bit drivers from the mini-CD, but was very disappointed by the speed at first. Tested 1 of my new USB3.0 flash drives and the increase in speed was about 0.5 Mbps over the same test performed at USB2.0.
I went to Silverstone's website and downloaded the latest driver and firmware. The firmware was the trick! Updated the firmware and my test speed went from 3.5 Mbps to over 25.0 Mbps. All I can say is WOW! What a difference when performing backups or copying large amounts of data.
IMHO, $29.95 well spent!

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems!

Pros: Easy to connect and install, adds USB3.0 header and ports to your mobo. Tested with a USB 3.0 device and r/w speeds are much higher than usb2.0. Never tried any benchmark testing, but this certainly does the job of upgrading to 3.0 without having to buy a whole new motherboard.

Cons: There just aren't that many USB 3.0 devices out there to utilize this to its fullest. I have also noticed that it doesn't recognize some usb2.0 devices sometimes, but I have enough of those ports that it doesn't really bother me much.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't buy this unless I really just needed a USB 3.0 header in my system. USB 3 is still in its infancy, so unless you need it, just stick with 2.0... you probably won't notice what 3 could do for a few years still. The higher powered ports are nice for charging, though.

2 out of 5 eggsWork when it feels like it

Pros: Small, does the job.

Cons: Doesn't work very well.

Other Thoughts: This device has a lot of problems. After googling for a few hours to try getting mine to work I realized I should have bought some other brand.

5 out of 5 eggsA real problem-solver!

Pros: Finally, my USB 3.0 drive array is stable!
Small size
Has internal 3.0 header plug

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: My Intel MoBo has a Renesas chipset built-in, but still, nothing connected via 3.0 was stable. I always got the dreaded disconnect/reconnect. Not anymore! This one also appears as Renesas, but works! The RAID-1 drive array and Lexar MicroSD card reader both perform flawlessly, and I'm seeing sustained 130MB/sec file transfers on large files, which seems to be limited by the external array's capabilities.Highly recommend!
I have noticed that the SD reader gets quite warm during use, and since heat = power, I'm glad this card is externally powered!
