Transform your monitor into a television or give your old NTSC a new lease on life with the Kworld SA290-Q external TVBox. This external tuner turns your display into a digital television as it receives both the new over-the-air broadcast digital High Definition video as well as being able to display unencrypted digital cable signals without a set-top box. 5 out of 5 eggsSuperb, if you know what you want.

Pros: Easy setup with everything you need in the package *except component cables. Provides HD signal to your device w/o an internal digital tuner i.e. Projectors, older pre-HDMI hd tv's. Superb Picture Quality

Cons: user interface is tedious, but rarely needed after initial setup.

Other Thoughts: This box is a cost saver. My projector is great for movies, but I really love to catch NFL games on it. Watching a game once a week during a season wasn't enough reason for me to drop 15+ dollars a month for HD service. Where I live the station that broadcasts their games has an over the air HD stream. Viola, 4 months later i'm still gonna get what I need and never have to give that cash to the cable company again.

1 out of 5 eggsQuestionable whether new

Pros: Unable to say

Cons: Did not work out of the box. Looked like it had been used, returned and not verified for working status.

Other Thoughts: I really hoped it would work

3 out of 5 eggsSA-280 HDTV DVI converter

Pros: Some reception - 3 channels during the day, 5 at night. Reception is erratic with sound drop outs and pixelation. At least I have some TV as the digital switchover starts in Alberta in a couple of weeks. For 2 channels the picture quality is excellent.

Cons: In my location, I can get at best 5 digital channels with a rabbit ears antenna. The reception is worse in the day time, but even at night there is some break up. I may need to get an outside multi-directional antenna to improve the reception. The manual is very poor and I needed help from the phone support guys at Kworld. If the manual had better written instructions, it would be easier to set up. The quality line drawings help to some extent, but are seriously lacking helpful set up info. The online manual at least allows the user to see the on-screen menu. Those in the written manual are way too small.

Other Thoughts: Unless you are in the perfect reception environment, your indoor antenna will not help you with this converter. If, like me, you cancelled your cable TV service years ago, but want some basic service, get a better antenna. You do not need something full of electronic amplifiers, just a DB2 and an external mount. You do not need a rotator. A radar map of the local HDTV signals will help with location of the aerial.

4 out of 5 eggsRecommended

Pros: - Great tuner! Locks on DTV better than the ATSC tuner in my recent LG plasma.
- Unlike most other ATSC converters that only support 420i (composite), these do HDTV if your TV/monitor can.

Cons: - User interface and remote a bit funky, but functional.
- Component ports out the side can be a problem box-placement wise.

Other Thoughts: - Only used for ATSC DTV, works great.

3 out of 5 eggsSurprised

Pros: Great Value!

Cons: I was not the first person to open or use this!

Other Thoughts: Was not advertised as a open box item- mine had fingerprints, torn box, scratched on top, and remote had been removed and replaced in bag. All items present and unit works. I am surprised that Newegg would do that. Two stars off for non disclosure! Too much trouble to RMA.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat when they work...

Pros: These are great devices: they correctly tune all the QAM channels from Comcast here in Denver, and provide excellent picture and sound to my TVs that aren't QAM capable.

The remote control works OK, but the buttons are not labeled well, so if you want to do something like switch output from the HDVI out connector to the Component Video out, you'll have to look up which button to press in the manual.

Cons: The main problem is in the design of the unit: The on/off, etc. buttons are chrome plated to make them look nice, but the plating conducts electricity all too well.

If you touch a button with even the slightest amount of static charge on your fingertip, you will zap the unit and damage the circuit board inside. This has happened to me twice now.

When it becomes damaged, the volume control circuit gets stuck in the 'volume up' state, so it's as if you were constantly holding down the volume up key on the remote.

This causes the volume control OSD (graphic on the screen) to appear constantly while you're watching a tv show. This is very annoying. This also makes the unit sluggish to respond to channel changes and other button presses.

Other Thoughts: If you buy one and only use the remote so that you never have to touch the unit with your finger, it might actually last more than a week.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Deal

Pros: Box does as advertised. It does get your local cable serivce BASIC channels, even less then basic. The channels i do get ( about 43 from a cable hookup ) play very well.. Brighthouse has FREE HD TV so i get about 8-10 free HD stations and they do play excellent. No lock ups on changing channels as described. Lock ups must be occuring from the antenna hook up but not with cable. Box has locked up once, i had to unplug, plug back in and was fine. Used the DVI port on the back the 24" Asus a set of puter speakers on the OUTPUT headphone jack, i can even turn the volume up and down. Has a setting to play stations either in their native state or force 4:3...

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsNew Life to old TV

Pros: Allows for QAM as well as ATSC and has both DVI and Component outputs.

Cons: Stretches 4:3 content to 16:9 but could be just a configuration problem. (however not an issue because I usually watch only hd channels which display properly.

Other Thoughts: I can't stand the blinding blue led light. Should be a way to turn it off. And it would be nice to be able to remove channels from the linup after the search finds them.

3 out of 5 eggsTuner okay, picture good

Pros: High quality picture, digital video output, inexpensive option to upgrade older HD capable TV sets.

Cons: The QAM tuner doesn't pick up as many channels as the QAM tuner in my Samsung T240HD. I live in the east S.F./Bay area and when connected to a Comcast basic cable feed it picked up 90 channels including all of the local channels and many other networks like Discovery. It cannot tune ESPN, SyFy, TNT, etc. while the ClearQAM tuner in my Samsung can, meaning it is not a decryption issue. This box doesn't have digital audio output which is strange given that it has digital video, however the analog output was fine when plugged into my receiver.

The remote has poorly chosen pictures on some of the button. I use a universal remote so this isn't that big of a deal.

The tuner shipped with Closed Captioning turned on and I had to dig through the menus to find where to turn it off.

Other Thoughts: Where are all of the external QAM tuners? Most are meant for computers and utilize USB for output, but not many are for tuner-less TV sets. I bought a 47" rear projection set when HDTV tuners were extra and cost $300. At less than $100, this box is worth it if you want to add HD capability to an older HD capable set.
