Transform your monitor into a television or give your old NTSC a new lease on life with the Kworld SA290-Q LE external TVBox. This external tuner turns your display into a digital television as it receives both the new over-the-air broadcast digital High Definition video as well as being able to display unencrypted digital cable signals without a set-top box. No computer is required to view images in up to 1080i resolution in 4:3 or widescreen 16:9 aspect ratios.
Connect to your monitor with the VGA output or to a television through the Composite or Component video outputs. Switch between PC, VGA and TV outputs with the flick of a switch. Turn your display into a digital photo frame and display still JPG images on your screen or play MP3 files through the speakers using the USB input. A 36-button infrared remote control is included for your convenience and the Power Smart feature acts as a sleep timer.

Pros: I bought the unit for the QAM tuner. This allows me to tune digital channels (including HD) that are sent by my cable provider (Comcast). It will not receive any encrypted channels and in my area will only tune "basic" digital channels even though I have a subscriber package that includes other digital channels. This is not the fault of the unit, but rather a function of the digital box that must be registered with the cable provider to enable the unlocking of the non-basic channels.
The unit is attractive and has component video outputs, which allow HD to pass. Note the HD is 1080i, not 1080p. This is available on the video component outputs, which are the only ones I used.
The reception quality of the HD stations is very good, with excellent detail and good color saturation.
My unit located and received 38 stations.
Cons: There is no digital audio output (coax or optical) so the sound will not be surround quality.
The QAM tuner will locate stations available on cable. It will assign them numbers that will not correspond with the "normal" channel numbers, so tuning requires some expertise. For example, channel 13 becomes 50-1 for the HD signal. (note: this is true of all QAM tuners I have used).
Although the HD channels are excellent video quality, non-HD stations have very poor video quality (much less than normal) and appear out of focus.
The component outputs are on the side of the unit, not the back, so the huge cable (5 cables with audio) will be visible when the unit is positioned on your shelf or in your cabinet.
The unit becomes quite hot during use, so be sure there is adequate ventilation.
If you have a 1080p display, this tuner is not capable of giving you the best picture because it is limited to 1080i.
Other Thoughts: Satisfaction with QAM tuner will depend on how many stations your cable provider leaves "open". Since my provider only leaves over-the-air or "free" stations open, it severely limits the usefulness of this tuner. Of the 38 stations it located, 11 were HD, 11 were the same stations not in HD, and almost all the rest were shopping, religious, or foreign language stations. I would suggest you check with your cable company before using this as a QAM tuner.
It might meet your needs, but I returned the unit (thanks Newegg for a fair return policy) because the value added did not justify the cost.

Pros: Price and look of exterior, and that's where the pros end.
Cons: DOA, Power comes on but won't go off. No 1080p, no digital output. Cords come out the side so they will be difficult to hide if you want to use the remote. Manual is worthless. Tech support is long distance to Taiwan (I didn't call). I tried all outputs VGA/Component/Composite and all I ever got was a blank screen. You have to toggle blindly through 6 potential settings to try to find the right input/output combination. I never found mine after triple checking all my cables. The unit is defective :(
Other Thoughts: All I want is 1080i HDTV from my cable companies over the air channels. This Unit is supposed to provide that and it failed. I'm going to return it for one more try and cross my fingers for a good box.

Fair value and acceptable image quality when working

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Decent picture quality, all things considered. Composite/component/VGA outputs = tremendous flexibility in what panels you can hook this up to: I had this connected to a Dell 24" (one of their Ultrasharp displays with practically every input on the planet) via the component inputs so I could get PIP without being restricted to the VGA connection this box provides.
Cons: Suddenly failed after 10 months of light use (~0.5-2h/wk, always connected through APC surge protector), had to RMA through K-World.
Replacement unit came back with a cable-in jack recessed so far into the unit that it's almost impossible to securely attach a cable. Their response was to mail it back for another RMA at my expense.
All my subsequent emails to them attempting to resolve this problem have been ignored.
Major downgrade of rating for the poor product quality and horrendous customer service. This box is a fair value if you get one that keeps going for a few years.
Other Thoughts: Picture quality wise, component/composite = acceptable, VGA = poor. On component outputs, not quite good enough to be viewed fairly close up (ie, on a 2nd monitor on your desk, as opposed to a large TV several feet away). Lots of streaking on VGA. I have a cheapo DTV converter box for comparison and even that blows the KWorld box away.

Pros: i'm gettin 108 channewls including 30 digital music channedls, ple 2 showtime + 2 hbo [ cable company goof], even after donshifting to Internet-only service where my provider put in a trap to block channels my cable ready old kworld tv-box received. my kworld tv-stick is not receiving most of these channels
Cons: I moved where there is nocable service, so i cannot use it anymore
Other Thoughts: since this device has no recording capability, it can legally ignore the do-not-record flag that rendered my kworld tv-stick useless
