1 out of 5 eggsNot Good for Hollywood

Pros: None. Wouldn't Work

Cons: Wouldn't Work for me in Hollywood with all major station only a few miles away.

I have tried to use this product multiple ways on 2 different computers, but this product won't work.

On 2 different computers I have installed the software and have tried setting it up by plugging in my cable TV. The only channel I got using the provided software was ESPN2. Then I tried using it through Windows Media Center and got nothing.

I then tried getting the over the air signal with the provided antenna & 60 mi range antenna and got nothing using both the provided software and the Windows Media Center on either antenna.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Easy setup and grabbed all the channels from my OTA antennae.

Cons: None really.

Other Thoughts: This is my second purchase of this item and the first one has been working great for over a year.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat price, bad everything else

Pros: I hooked this to my antenna input and it immediately pulled in 39 channels, including some that TVFool rated as "tropo" that my TV gets once in a blue moon. So the tuner itself is excellent.

Cons: Everything else is bad...

1) the software is horrible, a confusion of tiny meaningless buttons on a semi-transparent background that makes the text impossible to read. The various bad translations add a layer of hilarity.

2) the software runs all basic operations on Windows 10, like setting up the channel list and such, but fails to produce a display, which remains all-black.

NOTE: this stick works with other software like MythTV, so that's a solution.

3) it appears there is no tech support at all. All links point to their FAQs page.

4) the stick has a U-shaped clear plastic end on it, which you can see in the photos above. This is too thick, so some of the USB plug itself is covered. As a result you can't plug it into a USB port all the way, and it sits there half-out. They provide a USB extension cable which helps slightly, but it will pull out of that almost as easily. It's a stupid design flaw that should have been fixed long ago. Luckily you can fix this yourself with a little sandpaper.

Other Thoughts: In my experiments so far it does not appear to tune in "high VHF" channels, 7 to 13. I have one of these I *have* to get, 9. The list of channels it tries is in a private "TBL" data file, so I can't try fixing it myself. According to the file date, it was last updated in 2009.

I can put up with the other problems, but lacking one of the main channels in my area is a returnable problem. I continue to experiment...

2 out of 5 eggsMan, are they still selling this thing?

Pros: Get crystal clear TV on your computer.

Cons: Interface is like a DOS program. And not user friendly.

Other Thoughts: I bought two. One didn't work. It's been a long time, but there was some kind of a verification required, maybe between a serial number on the included CD and the serial number inside the dongle's firmware, before the dongle would start receiving. One of the two that I bought wouldn't verify. Shame on me for not pursuing a resolution.

3 out of 5 eggsPower and/or USB Compatibility Problems

Pros: * Compatible with Win 7 64 Windows Media Center
* Works in a dual-tuner setup
* Fairly good signal sensitivity

Cons: * Has some sort of problem with power requirements or USB compatibility that almost made me chuck it (see below)

Other Thoughts: I installed this unit as the second tuner in a dual-tuner WMC setup, along with an older KWorld 445 hybrid tuner stick, with both tuners receiving OTA ATSC.

Driver installation, device detection, and channel setup in Media Center seemed to go fine, but then when I tried to actually watch or record TV, I'd get a No Signal error on BOTH tuners, this 435 and the previously functional 445.

I tried all the usual voodoo: uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, restarting, unplugging and re-plugging the devices, re-scanning channels, etc. No dice.

What finally got the thing to work was moving it to a different USB port. Although it was on its own port (not an external hub), Windows device manager reported that the ports for both tuners were on the same host controller. I don't know if it was drawing too much power, or had some other driver or USB hub compatibility problem, but it works great now that it is no longer sharing any resources with the other tuner.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the "it's junk, doesn't work" reviews are due to some variation of the problem I encountered. I was just about to post a 1-star review myself when I finally got the thing working. Clearly this tuner stick has some serious issues, but it's fine IF you can work around those issues.

I'm posting this review in the hopes that some other purchasers will see it and be able to get their 435 to work also. However, based on my experience, you'd be better off spending a little more for the 445. I expect my better experience with that product is due to its more mature Conexant chip set.

5 out of 5 eggsGood unit

Pros: Easy install
Works with Linux
Good quality

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Bought this to pick up ATSC channels for my MythTV box. Works very well with Slackware 14.1 (I'm running the 3.18.11 kernel from -current.) Just plugged it in and added it to my tuner list with no issues.

Sensitivity is good - it picks up channels as well as my TV's ATSC tuner does, with no drop-outs or bad channels.

The bundled antenna is directional (needs to be repositioned for each channel) so isn't terribly useful for a media center, but would probably be fine for watching TV on the go. (I'd planned on using my own omnidrectional antenna anyway, so this isn't an issue for me.)

Overall very pleased with this unit!
