4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap and easy to install.

The card works under Mac OS X Mavericks and Yosemite without any issues. I didn't have to configure anything or even install a driver.

Cons: Isn't free.

Sometimes my audio interface (Behringer FCA 202) isn't seen by the operating system after booting, but simply disconnecting the cable and plugging it back in it fixes that problem.

Other Thoughts: I bought this card because I needed a firewire port to connect an old Behringer firewire sound interface. The card works great for that purpose. The card also works under Mac OS without any configuration or having to install a driver; it just works.

A previous review mentioned this card's chipset may have timing issues when it comes to using this card for audio applications. I haven't encountered this kind of a problem. However, the audio work I do with this card is basic stereo in/out. This may be an issue to keep in mind for anyone that plans to connect a high-end audio interface, mixer, etc.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy it

Pros: Inexpensive, but useless.

Cons: Windows y would not load the driver from the CD. The Bytecc site did not even list the product on the site. No driver to download. An email request to Bytecc Help Desk provided NO RESPONSE. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Real Deal

Pros: The PRICE! No rebate to hate! Well made card. Two different height PCI brackets. Two different styles of FireWire ports. Also, an internal port. No driver needed (under XP, at least) Hot connect/disconnect.

Cons: Not free. Too bad there are so many rocket scientists out there reviewing this board.

Other Thoughts: I do not have any kind of audio (sampler, mixer, whatever) device to try this card with. Timing would be very critical for that application, of course, so I can't vouch for it to work doing that. There are reviews that say the VIA chipset doesn't. Instead, it's running an Epson R1800 large format printer, which has a Firewire port AND a USB port. So it works great with a bi-directional printer hooked to it. The USB port is connected to a print server, which puts the printer on the network for anyone to print to, but which is NOT bi-directional. The problem is, no ink and status monitoring. This solves that. It's (also) connected to my main computer in the same room via FireWire now and it works perfectly; everything does. The <ONLY> thing I'm not sure of is whether this card would work with a high quality audio device. Everything else people wrote in the other (negative) reviews, you can disregard, as far as I'm concerned. In Windows XP, it installs the driver during boot in no time at all and they could send the card without the CD and probably have a lot less confused boneheads on their hands.

2 out of 5 eggsOne of the four ports works

Pros: The card installed into the slot easily. The internal port works.

Cons: I could not get any of the three external ports to work, which makes the board useless. (I'm not gonna leave my case open just so I can connect to my video camera!)

Other Thoughts: I picked this board because it had a 4-pin connector as well as 6-pins, but since it doesn't work, guess I'll have to box it all up and send it back.

I share the confusion others had regarding the CD contents....

FWIW, I'm running Win 7 Pro with 2 GB RAM.

1 out of 5 eggswill not recognize

Pros: cheap

Cons: card does not recognize on Windows XP sp3. Tried several attempts / manual assigning with no luck. Mini cd included is a universal disc with a bunch of Bytecc's other products on it. A folder named "1394 driver" would lead you to believe the driver would be there, but no, it's a bunch of media ware like divx, quicktime, WinMedia, etc. Emailed Bytecc (horrible site btw), actually got a response same day of:

"Dear Customer,
There will be no driver requires for this model BT-FW-310V under Windows System.

returning to newegg as this product will not work for me.

Other Thoughts: VIA chip. booooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card, price was nice too

Pros: I'm using this card to convert 8mm videos to digital format using an old camcorder. The card seems to read as fast as the camcorder will send video, which is cool. I bet that the card reads faster though.

Still, great card, no need for anything better for my use.

Cons: Card slot cover was slightly bent when it arrived. It didn't cause any problems when installing, but it was a little unnerving. The optional low profile covers were not bent.

Other Thoughts: Most people will have no need to pay for anything expensive. This card does the trick.

1 out of 5 eggsCD Didnt work

Pros: Looks ok, and sure it works great but it doesnt find the driver

Cons: I have a WinXP PC and it will not find the driver on windows update, then installed the disk and will not find it on there either. Went to there website and there is a listing on there product page but no driver anywhere for it. Tried Google the ID# or card info and no luck on the web. I emailed Bytecc and 3 days later still no reply. Going to send back to Newegg today.

Other Thoughts: Probably a great card but poor Tech support/ Email Support.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Linux

Pros: I am using this with Ubuntu Linux and MythTV. No driver problems, it just worked. I record using Firewire from a Comcast cable box.

Cons: Sometimes recordings fail, although i think that may be due to cable box problems rather that this adapter card.
