2 out of 5 eggsPATA harddrive problems with Windows7

Pros: Works in Fedora Linux.

Cons: My previously-installed WIndows7 system with SATA hard drive failed to boot after I added this card and connected a PATA harddrive. So I could not use the PATA drive under Win7. Instead I used Linux to copy files from the PATA drive to the SATA drive, then removed the PATA drive and booted Win7 successfully.

2 out of 5 eggsPost does not display with this card installed

Pros: Don't know because computer does not recognize and when card installed computer "skips" post but does boot to win 7

Cons: The controller on this card seems to interfere with MB controller. Computer will boot up but skips the post screen and when in Windows the card is not recognized until drivers are installed. Then IDE device connected to this card is not recognized and computer continues to not display post or allow access to BIOS setup

Other Thoughts: Issue is probably between my ECS MB SATA controller and the controller on this card. Tried all possible BIOS settings and none helped. I wanted this to add an IDE controller to my all SATA new MB. There do not seem to be a lot of choices out there

2 out of 5 eggsBypasses Bios on startup

Pros: Works with windows 7 for ide optical drive after vantec drivers installed.

Cons: When the card is in pci-e slot there is no access to BIOS on start-up. This is a deal killer for me since to make any bios change I would have to open up the case and physically remove this card. Why it acts this way I don't know.

Other Thoughts: I got this in order to use rather large perfectly functional IDE dirves and IDE optical drives on a newer MB that has only SATA drive support.
I also got an IDE to SATA converter from the same vendor which works great on a 500gb IDE drive. I have not tried the converter on an optical drive.
If I had it to do over again I might have gotten one of the remaining MB that offer legacy IDE support

5 out of 5 eggsJust works

Pros: Just works. Bootable and Linux (Ubuntu 11.04 - kernel v2.6.38) worked out of the box.

Has worked trouble-free for 18 months. I'm here to buy another.

Cons: Jumpers seem clumsy, in this day and age. But it's a minor pont, really.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this with a blu-ray burner and an old SATA HDD. Therefore, I can't really say much about performance, though I have /var, /home, /tmp, and swap on that drive and the system is snappy (everything is on a SSD).

Since I'm going to upgrade the HDD to a 10k RPM SATA III Velociraptor I got on sale, I tried replacing the card with a ASMEDIA ASM1061-based card (Startech PEXESAT322I), and Linux did NOT like it.

This card has a JMicron JMB363 controller on it. My motherboard also has a JMB368 IDE controller, so it's not surprising that the BIOS likes it. I haven't had occasion to use the IDE on this card, but I expect it to work as well as my motherboard's IDE, which is fine.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine, has hot-pluggable SATA/eSATA ports

Pros: Functioning PATA port and hot-pluggable SATA II and eSATA ports. Package contains one IDE and two internal SATA cables, plus driver CD.

Cons: Only 2 SATA/eSATA ports at a time can be enabled, but the description states that. No eSATA cable included.

Other Thoughts: Not all such add-on cards have hot-pluggable SATA ports, but these work. Using it as a port multiplier in Linux, haven't tried RAID there. If I were building this card I would have made it so that all 4 SATA ports could be enabled simultaneously, but then it probably would have cost more.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little addition...

Pros: As others have mentioned this card adds a IDE/P-ATA and 2 SATA channels. Via jumpers you can configure it to use any combination of the four ports. In my case I needed two internal SATA ports, and this is the default settings.

Cons: I doubt I could use the IDE port even if I wanted to. It is about 1/4" from my top video card! If only they used a connector that plugged into the side of the card....

Other Thoughts: When I installed it Win7 (64bit) picked it up right away. DO NOT USE THE WINDOWS DRIVERS! My system would POST, but hang at the Windows screen. Using the provided drivers disk cured this, and the ports are hot swappable.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: I've only used the PATA interface but it works well with no problems. The ROM allows the system to boot off a CD or DVD drive when installing a new OS.

Cons: Just a very slight negative..the JMicron chip used on the board requires a new driver when installing WinXP or Vista. So make sure you have a floppy drive to create the special F6 driver floppy and use it at OS installation. Win8 has the driver included. Haven't tried Win7.

Other Thoughts: I just wanted the PATA interface so I could use all the old IDE/PATA drives I have lying around with a new motherboard. The SATA ports were a bonus for me.

5 out of 5 eggsport multiplier support

Pros: Just got the card so I won't bother reviewing it yet. I'll post later once I've had some experience with it

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: One of the earlier posters mentioned the need for a port multiplier, and rated the card lower because it was lacking. According to the Vantec documentation, the UGT-IS100R (this card) does in fact include a port multiplier, among it's many other features (http://www.vantecusa.com/system/application/media/data_file/ugt-is100r_manual.pdf). I'll let you know how it works once I've had a chance to test it with my JBOD eSATA enclosure.

1 out of 5 eggsKnow what you are buying

Pros: The ports do actually work.

Cons: This is listed as a 4+1 port card. KNOW THAT ONLY 2 SATA PORTS WORK AT ONCE. There are internal jumpers that you have to flip back and forth to choose an internal port or an external one.

Other Thoughts: I talked to support about it and they RMAed it for me. At this time Newegg has it listed as being able to support 4 devices at once so they know about the problem now and will hopefully update it for future users. I'm not mad about it because it wasn't Newegg's fault that the manufacturer has on their box that it supports 4 devices.
