5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Works great , forget speeds now but were inline with everyone else and USB benchmarks. I use primarily for WD USB 3 passport 500gig external... Tested with Win 7, Debian Wheezy, LInux Mint 15 and Windows 8.2 , worked without driver install on Linux and Win 8.1 but still installed factory drivers for Win 8.1 to get best perf..

Cons: No cons

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I bought 2 of these cards. I moved a video file (4.03gb) in 35 seconds. I downloaded the latest driver and moved the same file in 35 seconds. No change. How could you improve on the speed?? I see that this card is out of stock, but I would recommend VANTEC for speed.

Cons: Nothing yet.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect USB 3 on Older Motherboards

Pros: Easy install. Painless driver install on Windows 8. Showed up right away as operational in device manager.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Installed this to get some USB 3.0 functionality for my Windows 8 testbed, which is running on a socket 775 motherboard. Windows 8 automatically installed compatible drivers,,,,it preferred them over the download from website.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat price, disappointing lifetime

Pros: Great transfer speeds, easy installation.

Cons: Doesn't seem to last very long. Mine worked for about 5 hours of use, then failed to show in the Device Manager no matter what I try.

Other Thoughts: It's a great price for what it is, but hopefully yours will last longer than mine.

3 out of 5 eggsVantec 2-port USB 3.0 PCI-e uses older Renesas chipset

Pros: SATA to Molex power adapter provided.
Uses Renesas chip set.

Cons: Uese older Renesas chip D720200A instead of the newer D7202001 or D7202002 chip.
Need to update the driver to get better performance

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 installs the latest driver from MS automatically, you will need to install the Renesas driver on Windows 7 systems.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsChipsets and Drivers

Pros: There is a huge difference in USB 3 speeds and reliability that depends on the chip sets used and the quality of the drivers. I have had good luck in the past with the NEC chip set that this card uses.

When I first installed this I used the drivers (for Windows 7 64 bit) that came on the supplied disk. When I started using this adapter I was getting only 60 meg/sec reads and 30 meg/sec writes on drives that I knew ran faster on my other desktop that uses an onboard Eton chip set. This is definitely USB 3 speed but I was getting 20 to 30 meg/sec faster on my Eton chip set.

I went online to the Vantec Web site and downloaded the latest drivers and my transfer speeds jumped dramatically. I now get 80 to 90 meg/sec reads from those same drives which is what I was expecting.

Comes with a power adapter cable (molex to sata) that I did not need but nice to have. You need to plug in a power supply cable of some kind to this card to supply the higher amperage that USB 3 devices demand (especially on non AC powered drives). My power supply had plenty of molex connectors.

Cons: Supplied drivers on the disk are slow. Get the latest from the web site.

Other Thoughts: Good price. Quality seems fine. I would recommend this to others.

Be careful plugging in the molex cable on this card. Hold the back of the on board connector with your thumb when plugging in so that you don't bend or break that connector. Lot's of cards have this problem but just be careful and you won't have any difficulties.

4 out of 5 eggssomewhat good

Pros: Works either with generic Win8 driver or with its own from Vantec's page (CD included has up to win7 drivers). Extra power is needed, sata-to-molex cable included.
Small, fitted below video card PCI-E where, if it was bigger, would obstruct the VC fan.

Cons: It does Not work with VMware workstation 9-812388 and below; VMw states you need to use generic MS driver but this card won't. Devices attached on it cannot be loaded inside VMs.

After about a week it stopped working (yellow exclamation mark in devmgr). Reboot didn't help. Power off for a minute, started working. Updated firmware, works fine for the past 3 days. Will monitor.

Other Thoughts: usb2 MBps usb3MBps
SATA 5400 rpm 29 43

Waay below usb 3.0 specs huh? I wonder if Intel's Renesas is faster?

A usb3 card reader provides the max transfer speed of your card model. e.g. 16GB Class 10 SDXC copies with 10MBps (+/- .8MBps)
