  • newegg HyperDuo Technology HyperDuo, created by Marvell Semiconductor, Inc., optimizes the performance of storage technology. It involves the combination of the SSD as cache storage for the HDD drive to give unparalleled access speed. This tiering of SSD and HDD can give you 80% SSD performance at about the a third of the cost. Using safe mode, you mirror frequently accessed files (hot files) in SSD speed; in capacity mode, you combine SSD and HDD with frequently accessed files (hot files) in the SSD. You can easily setup the configuration in the card BIOS to optimize your system.
  • newegg Four SATA III Channels A total of four channel gives you the capability of add up to four HDD/SSD drives for performance boost or storage expansion. SATA III 6Gbps on every channel offers the maximum performance for all your drives.
  • newegg Six Configurable Ports Two dedicated channels are routed to two internal ports and cannot be disabled. The other two channels can be assigned to two internal ports, two external ports, or one internal port and one external port, all at your will. The configuration is implemented via the onboard jumper. The port multiplier function is great for multi-bay enclosures to minimize multiple cables and maximize storage. Support both FIS and command-based switching
  • newegg Multiple RAID Modes RAID 0, 1, 10, and HyperDuo function for redundancy Keep your data safe and, at the same time, enjoy faster disk access.
  • newegg PCI Express 2.0 This stable technology with great compatibility provides faster and wider bandwidth for data flow between the drives and your system.
  • newegg Easy Integration A low-profile bracket is included to simplify your installation into standard desktop-, slimline-, or low-profile systems.

1 out of 5 eggsUnusable controller card

Pros: affordable, sata III expansion, raid

Cons: slow speed, disconnects regularly

Other Thoughts: Bought this card to add 4 additional hard drives to my server but the speed on the card was ok, but it was just additional storage so I didn't care much. What's annoying about the card is that my hard drives would disconnect so often when I write large files to my server...I would have to reboot my server for it to appear again. This card is going back and I'm spending the money else where

5 out of 5 eggsNicely made card

Pros: Started right up on W7 automatic driver installation. Accepted its own drivers from the included disk no problem. Physically, well made.

Cons: Jumper mapping in the paper manual is unintelligible (at least to me) but the correct placement is marked on the board itself so that doesn't matter.

Other Thoughts: Installed this on an ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 because the native SATA on that MBoard eats HHDs and SSDs. I have two installations of that board and they are both death for drives. So, a sample of two.

5 out of 5 eggsCard is solid, Hyperduo not so impressive

Pros: ARM processor - Hardware RAID

low cost RAID solution to breathe new life into an older Core2 system

Hyperduo works, interesting novelty.

Cons: problems getting into RAID config. Had to boot off a windows drive and install the localhost web configurator in order to set hyperduo. Tricky.
Hyperduo is a novelty. Still lots of room for improvement. I wasn't so impressed. Not docking an egg for hyperduo, I'm docking an egg for Marvell's chipset not playing nice with my Intel board. Since Intel and Marvell have a close relationship, I was hoping it would play nicer than it did.

Other Thoughts: I installed this with a Seagate 2TB SSHD and a OCZ Vertex 460A 480GB SSD, after wanting to try Hyperduo for years. Hyperduo will bump your reads up, but writes will still be bottlenecked down to your mechanical drive. After giving it 2 weeks, I gave up on hyperduo, broke the config and cloned from SSHD to SSD. After seeing the difference, I will not be going back to Hyperduo. Still, as a bootable SATA 6Gbs controller, this card is pretty nice!

The problems getting into the card's RAID config were on an Intel DP45SG motherboard with ICH10R. Please note that this card did NOT interfere with the mobo's existing RAID1 volume, yet, I couldn't get into the bios/bootup menu no matter how many times I tried. Afer scratching my my head for about an hour, I succeeded by booting up from my original drive, installing driver and web-based interface, and viola, I was able to configure hyperduo.

I gave it 2 weeks, and decided that it was limiting my SSD too much. So what if it extends the life of SSD? I paid for the speed and I couldn't sacrifice my IOPS and write speeds.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: Benchmarks in Raid 0 and 1 exactly how one would expect. The "boost" feature with an SSD also works excellent.

Cons: bios boot screen is slower than some units i've used.

Other Thoughts: Would recommend price/performance.

5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive hardware RAID!

Pros: 1. Inexpensive
2. Contains a ARM processor on board for true hardware RAID.
3. Plug and Play in my WHS 2011 server box.
4. Has Hyperduo for SSD+HDD integration.

Cons: None at this time.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this controller card with a AsRock B85M-ITX motherboard for a home server. I have 8x SATA 3 ports plus 1x eSATA port available for drives. I also want to point out that this card is installed and working correctly in a PCIe v3.0 x16 slot usually meant for graphics cards. (although this may be more motherboard related).

I'm currently not using the RAID or Hyperduo functions, but have the option to try them in the future.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Excellent fast ports.

Cons: The internal ports did not work on my 5 year old motherboard. I'm not sure about the external ports because I did not test them.

Other Thoughts: Make sure your motherboard is compatible with this card.

3 out of 5 eggsTurns off motherboard sata ports

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: It disabled sata ports on my motherboard. Wanted to add more ports, ended up loosing my HDD ports.

Other Thoughts: Nice card if it will work with your motherboard, seems like it conflicts with my ports on Asus z97 Deluxe board..

2 out of 5 eggsdoes not work in linux

Pros: I guess it show up in windows 7 and linux.

Cons: only four port can be used at a time, so do not expect to use all six ports at a time.

Does not work under linux. It will work for a while but any sort of large io transfer will get you IO Error and the entire sata card will go down. Only a hard shutdown and restart will fix this, not even a reset will fix it.

Other Thoughts: I guess this will work fine if you just want windows support.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Card, Great Buy

Pros: This card has a solid physical design, and the inclusion of low-profile mounting brackets means you can use this is thin client, and 2U+ rack cases.

I am using the card to host an external backup drive, and an internal backup drive. Solid performance, no issues at all.

For those having issues with the drivers, make sure you get the Marvell 92xx drivers from Marvell's website. In Device Manager the the files are listed as mv91xx.sys, mvxxmm.sys, and mv91xxm.dll.

In regards to device compatibility, I have had no issues testing SATA I, II and III hard drives. As well, no issues with either DVD-RW or BR-RW drives, single and dual layer. Booting from all devices works fine, but this is actually dependent upon the motherboard BIOS.

Cons: There are a couple of items that buyers need to be made aware of:
- Firstly, this card is requires a PCI-e x4 or larger slot. It will not fit into x2 as the description indicates.
- Secondly, this card has four SATA channels, that means only four of the six ports are usable at once.

Other Thoughts: This is a great card, with solid compatibility and performance. I have never bought a bad Vantec product, and they are one of the few brand names I inherently trust.
