Reality
- Pros: It does every thing that it says it does right out of the box and does it well. For the features and the price it is a great deal.
- Cons: If you want to do an NFS mount to a server you have to telnet in and do it manually rather than having a screen doing it. But no where in the documentation or advertising does it say that it supports NFS.
- Other Thoughts: There are lots of people running around screaming that this device is buggy after they downloaded and installed a beta firmware that they were advised not to install and were warned it would be buggy. Now that they have found bugs they are running around screaming jihad. Stick with the release versions of the firmware if you want trouble free use.
There are also a number of people complaining that it doesn't include features that it never claimed to have. Seems kind of unfair to me. If you buy a Honda don't expect it to have a Ferrari engine. Having said that ASUS is obviously working on adding features but until they say they have them and they work don't expect to have them.
Very Impressive (for $100)
- Pros: When I first got the device it had the 1.07 firmware which didn't include convenient features like UPnP. But it did connect to my existing media server any play all kinds of files (even VOBs).
Then I updated to the 1.11 firmware and it improved significantly. In particular I already have a media server with WMP11 installed and library of media ready to go. So all I had to do was point it at my server and it worked straight away.
I didn't know until I actually searched that this thing is powered by linux. In fact you can telnet into it and manipulate anyway you want (root w/no password).
There's already ipkgs available for MIPs so it can very easily be extended to almost anything (last I read the XBMC forums the experts seemed pessimistic on the possibility of a port). The possibilities are only limited by your linux knowledge (or the willingness of forum members to answer your questions).
It really does everything it claims it can and does it well.
- Cons: In it's current state playing over a network is not the easiest thing to setup. The average person could easily play something off of a thumb drive or hard drive but the network would probably be more difficult. The interface is not very pretty (well dead-simple but effective). These aren't really cons for me (being an enthusiast) but it may turn some people off.
- Other Thoughts: The thing about WMP11 is that the library has to be manged through WMP11. You can create play lists and whatever else through WMP11 and the OPlay will work with those play lists and play file after file without stopping.

Good media player
- Pros: This is my 2nd Asus media player. It can play various format media files. The player has fast response after power is on.
- Cons: None
Great product
- Pros: Great! Plays everything.
- Cons: Keys on remote could be better arranged. Too easy to hit next chapter/file, instead of fast forward/reverse.
- Other Thoughts: 1st thing to do is upgrade to the latest firmware. Very easy to do, download to a usb drive, and plug it in.
It does what it says
- Pros: ***IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS, SO IT DOES WHAT IT SHOULD.***
I'm glad that some people on here are finally posting sensible reviews about this product. I got tired of using the S-Video from my PC, so I bought this. I stick a USB drive in it, it plays a ton of formats and the pic quality looks good to me on both my plasma and dlp tv.
I know it's not a WDTV HD Live, it's not a CinemaTube, it doesn't have wireless, etc. If you need specific features, compatibilities or filesystems and have to pay more money, go for it.
However, this is already a pretty versatile product, so if you read the info on this device and it does what you need, go for it. ASUS is a well-known company and seems to be releasing firmware fairly, which I recommend due to the issue in my "Cons" section.
- Cons: My only issue was when I first got it, it had a horrible popping sound. I honestly thought I was gonna have to get an RMA for a defect. It came with Firmware v1.07 and once I updated the firmware, it was good to go.
