5 out of 5 eggsVery precise piece of equipment

Pros: The unit is very easy to use, basically just plug it in. It will convert very many resolutions to hdv. You want to get a hdcp remover though as sometimes it may interfere with picture.

Cons: Expensive. Took me a while to realize that some resolutions can't be converted.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat!... When it works...

Pros: - Excellent Video Quality
- Easy setup
- Can be bus-powered if needed
- Seems to be HDCP compatible
- Captures both Audio and Video

Cons: Only one big one: For MAC users, if you have a newer, Intel-based Mac that only has a FireWire800 port (also known as 1394b), you will have to try a bunch of different 6-pin to 9-pin firewire cables until you find one that CONSISTENTLY works with this product. I have contacted Grass Valley about this issue, and although they DO KNOW about the issue, they will take the easy way out and tell you that the product was never specifically stated to work with FW800. In my opinion, a gross slap-in-the-face for anyone that spends over $500 for "Pro" hardware.

Other Thoughts: GV has suggested to me that Belkin cables will work fine with the ADVC-HD50. I have not found that to be the case. I have found one "generic" cable that works all the time... but there is no manufacturer markings on the cable that I can share... (sorry) :(

When this device is working though, it's wonderful. It converts HDMI to a standard HDV signal, and behaves/captures beautifully.
