4 out of 5 eggsnon techs beware

Pros: sensitive
slim software
great antenna

out of 4 USB ATSC recievers on the same computer & antenna this worked best. I get 38 channels in North SF Bay where the "others" (that I can't list on newegg) either found less, used more CPU or installed extremely over bloated software.

Software is for the minimalist and acts as it should.

Runs as hot as the others but has vents

Cons: blue screen of death with CD driver
Plextor support sent links for driver unistall and new software&driver - new software won't install under win2k but driver works. Takes a tech to sort that out.

support is less than minimal - no response to fact that new software requires XP+

Station scan won't find any VHF channels but you can edit the xml file and add them manually using the frequencies and making up new 8-4-4-12 digit identifiers

EPG just shows titles - not the details

Other Thoughts: win2k
dell M4300 2.2duo @ 1920x1200

Actually a nice piece of hardware if you figure it out

don't expect any software updates

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

Pros: None

Cons: Installed on Thinkpad with plenty of memory and 128Mb ATI video. Received 4 stations, which is ok, but soon all the CPU resources (100%) were being used. Closed the program and restarted windows and the CPU usage problem returned without even running the Plextor HDTV program.

To see if it is laptop buss speed related, I installed it on my Intel Core2 Duo workstation and had the same problem. Found a process in task manager called something like ...drv.exe (also shows up in system tray) and stopped the process and problem went away. I think it is a process related to the programs ability to store HDTV data on the HDD. I uninstalled the Plextor program on both computers and that process is no longer shown in task manager.

What a waste of time and money.

Other Thoughts: The USB device seems to run somewhat warm, which will shorten the battery life on a laptop. Not to mention the suction cup that doesn't suction and a coax cable that is way to stiff.

2 out of 5 eggsNo product support

Pros: Good picture and sound. I want to like this product except for the complete lack of support.

Cons: Just be aware that no one seems to support this product if you have a problem. Plextor's website has nothing but advertising and a very basic FAQ. They don't even list any drivers. This product causes my Thinkpad T61 to crash and there doesn't seem to be anyone out there who cares! Beware...

2 out of 5 eggsCoulda been better

Pros: Nice size.

Cons: Rather poor quality; sound and pix out of sync. Volume faint on some stations, but not others. Antenna very touchy as to location. Better than nothing to watch evening news while still at work. Are there better products? I would have paid more for one that works as it should.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Tuner with some drawbacks

Pros: - Slim USB design
- Very Easy Installation even in Vista
- Picked up 4 digital and 2 HD channels immediately (your area may have more or less)
- Picture quality and sound just as you would expect for digital and HD channels
- Can use Windows Media Center if you want better overall flexibility (although it did not pick up as many channels as the program that came with it)

Cons: - No NTSC support but it wont matter early next year when all broadcasts go digital (ATSC)
- Every once in a while the signal freezes for a millisecond. Very similar to what you would see in a layer change on a DVD-9 (Dual Layer). This could be a hard drive "hickup" since it acts like a DVR and is continually recording
- The antenna that comes with it is a mess. It only has a 6' cable and the cable is so thick that it makes trying to stand the antenna anywhere almost impossible as it just falls over. The suction cup works ok, but again the thick cable pulls on it and eventually the suction fails.
- There are better Electronic Program Guides out there but the one included is ok, a little slow

Other Thoughts: I've been using this on my Dell XPS 1710 Laptop for 2 months now and it's worked great. The "layer change" effect is quite rare and isn't a huge deal. I had to buy an extension coaxial cable to give me more distance to put my antenna as I mainly use it for indoor purposes. If you are buying this for outdoor then 6' is fine. Also, Media Center in Vista didn't pick up as many channels as the program that came with it. That kind of surprised me. Also, the one I'm using now is a replacement. The first one I bought from Newegg worked 2-3 times then just acted strangely. Would turn off, the computer wouldn't detect the tuner. So if you do buy one and are struggling to set it up send it back. The second one I got worked without any hassle. Thanks to Newegg again for super fast shipping twice, and hassle free replacement!

5 out of 5 eggsHD-TV on PC

Pros: Easy to install, simple to use, works as expected. I activated the search for signal function upon first use, the TV stations were found quickly, only (7) for my area, but they come in clear. Allows for istant recording of the program being watched. Replay of the recording can be done using included software, or other players, Windows Media Player, Nero, DivX, ect.

Cons: For the price, none.

Other Thoughts: I installed this device on an older system P4 3.4 650 cpu, Windows XP Pro w/sp2, 7800 GS agp graphics card, and Gateway FPD2485W 24" monitor. The picture image is sharp, clear, and I have not noticed any ghosting. I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsNot ready for prime time

Pros: When signal is strong and software is working, the HDTV picture is excellent. Recorded and played back HDTV programming successfully at times.

Cons: Weak software. Driver supplied on CD won't work with Win 2K even though advertised as compatible. Eventually found usable Win2K driver supplied by Artec, but scheduled recording didn't work with Win2K. Function seemed better with Win XP but still with frequent video-audio sync problems, slow channel switching and slow program loading.

Other Thoughts: It looks like Plextor repackaged the Artec T14A device with a remote control and did little if anything to improve the software.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work

Pros: None

Cons: Even with a 3.0 GHz processor it doesn't work. Half the channels show no video the other half are jerky. Only 1 channel was reasonable.

With NewEgg it will cost $20 to return it. If you think it might work for you, buy it somewhere else in case it doesn't.

4 out of 5 eggsNice feature in a small package

Pros: Installed in a Lenovo dual core 1.8GHz laptop, 1GB, 128MB video running XP Pro. Room on 16th fl, NYC's Lower East Side. Using the included antenna, was able to receive all the major networks in HD. Good picture. Remote was limited in functionality but handy.

Cons: May not have purchased it if there wasn't $20 rebate.

Other Thoughts: Have not tried upgrading to a better antenna. Also, did not try it with Microsoft Media Center edition - so user reported better sensitivity and features.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: It works great! I get all 23 channels in my NYC dorm! I'm using the stock antenna.

Cons: Somtiems Lags, audio only or weaksignal, but it could be my room and laptop.
