5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: works great

Cons: had a little trouble pairing the remote, had to put in fresh batteries

Other Thoughts: I am using this mainly with Plex to get media from a PC to all of my tv's throughout the house. Had no issues streaming wireless anywhere to date.

3 out of 5 eggsIncorrect Power Cord

Pros: Unit looked new with no noticeably scratches Packaging was more than adequate to protect the device during transit. Remote was paired coming out of the box. Since I already had a Roku 2XS the setup was quick and easy.

Cons: It took me almost 2 weeks before I could use the Roku 3. After reading the reviews, I decided to roll the dice and order a refub unit. I received the unit in 2 business days but when I went to set it up, I found that the power cord did not fit. Reading the reviews below, you will find that this is not uncommon.

I was a bit disappointed but didn't think it was a big deal. I fired up a chat with Newegg to discuss getting a power cord. Four chats and a few weeks later I was finally up and running.

The first chat unfortunately went nowhere as I was told that my email box was full. The agent told me that she could not assist me until I cleaned out my mail folder and allowed her to send me a message. I ended the chat, cleaned out my inbox and waited until the next morning to start another chat.

The second chat did not require any email from the support agent. I discussed the incorrect power cord and the agent informed me that she would check with the warehouse, find out if they had the correct cord and ship it to me. I disconnected, waited a few days but didn't hear anything back.

Chat 3 - the agent informs me that they do not have any power cords but will offer me a partial refund so I can purchase one myself. I accepted the offer and immediately went looking for a new cord.

Chat 4 - I contacted Roku directly and was informed that although the device is not under warranty (because it is a refurb), they would ship me the correct cord anyway. I couldn't have been more pleased with Roku support. Approximately 5 business days later, I received the correct cord and was in business.

Other Thoughts: The only reason I am not giving a higher rating is because I was forced to jump through hoops which took several days and was completely unnecessary. I appreciate the partial refund but would have been happier if this was done right off the bat.

I like the device but don't see much of a performance difference between the 2XS and 3. I was happy with the 2XS and this doesn't feel much different. The only noticeable change I see is the upgraded Netflix interface which has separated Netflix from Netflix kids.

1 out of 5 eggsScraping the bottom of the refurb barrel

Pros: Roku has same capabilities, and streams that are not on the AppleTV.

Cons: These refurb units have a disturbingly high defect rate, and Roku tech support is...., well, to be kind, lacking. If you have a defective unit, the Newegg customer support is professional, and a pleasure to work with. I have had mixed results with 6 refurbed units, I don't think the few $$ saved over new is worth the added aggravation.

5 out of 5 eggsLike new

Pros: Unit came like new with no scrapes or scratches at all. So much faster than my old HD model. Works great with my Lynksys 4200 N-band in any room.

Cons: Pairing instructions for remote on last page of booklet. I had it all packaged back up to send back before I finally found that little bit of information. I've only had to pair it once.

Other Thoughts: Hooked it up in our bedroom one night to watch House of Cards, wife won't give it back. Will buy another here first.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA - I'm not the only one

Pros: I have a Roku V1 and a Roku 2. The devices themselves are great.

Cons: Arrived DOA and now I get to pay $12 to get another one like several other posters.

Whoever, recertified these did a terrible job. If I had it to do over again I'd buy a new one.

Other Thoughts: Buy NEW!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like new

Pros: Got this about 2 months ago, and so far have not had any issues like everyone else. The headphone jack works great at night when you don't want to disturb anyone else.

Cons: The remote did not come paired to the roku but the instructions in the box took care of that. batteries don't seem to last as long as on the roku 2XD that I used to have.

Other Thoughts: If people read the instructions they would find out how to pair the remote..

2 out of 5 eggsFollowup to previous review

Pros: When it works, it works well.

Having said that...

Cons: The remote and the way it links to the box is utter garbage. It loses pairing constantly. Without a working remote, the thing is useless.

I now have two of these Roku 3's and they both do the same thing.

Many, many people with this problem, according to a Google search. Roku's 'solution' is to reset the device. Right. So there you are, in the middle of watching a movie, you pause, then when you hit play, nothing happens. NOTHING.

The only solution is to reboot the unit, lose your place, start watching the movie over again? Not something sane people will do more than once. Infuriating.

The only thing more maddening than this happening is that (according to a post by Roku the Roku forums), Roku has known about this issue since March of 2003, and in almost a year has apparently done NOTHING to fix it.

Buyer beware.

Other Thoughts: The Roku Android app works even if the remote has gone belly up. So it's not the box itself that's the problem.

The box is hardwired to my router, so it's not a wireless issue.

At one point, Roku tech support in chat claimed the problem was because I had a dual band router. I do NOT have a dual band router.

What is clear is that they have no idea why this happens, and have no solution but try to shift the blame onto the customer.

Really, really disappointing. I so wanted to like the thing.

5 out of 5 eggsThe remote works just fine people

Pros: People the Remotes work ... stop RMAing something when you have not even read the entire start guide.

On the last page in the start up guide it tells you how to Pair your remote with your Roku.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: READ THE ENTIRE START GUIDE BEFORE YOU SEND IT BACK !!!!

2 out of 5 eggsAvoid!

Pros: ...

Cons: Unit came with wrong power supply (bigger plug than the one required by the unit) come on Newegg! several users already warned you about this!
Also on power up, unit got stuck in an endless reboot loop .... so it does not work

Other Thoughts: Promising device, no aparent quality control by Newegg, shipped a broken unit with the wrong power supply!

4 out of 5 eggsInitial Impression

Pros: Tiny little hockey puck of a device, does exactly what is claims. On a hardwired net connection, starts streaming immediately. So far, I've only tried it with Jungle River streaming, HBOGo, and Time Warner feeds, works beautifully.

Passes 5.1 Dolby Digital on Jungle River movies. Haven't tried it with other feeds yet.

Far superior experience to other streaming methods I've tried. Highly responsive to pause/play/shuttle.

LOVE the 7 second rewind on the remote.

Cons: Refurb unit came (like most reviews indicate) with DEAD batteries and an unpaired remote. Not a big deal, but I would have preferred NO batteries. Unit looked generally OK, a few minor scuffs.

Also, Roku puts several channels on your main screen that you did not select. If you wish to remove them, select the channel, then push the "*" button on the remote to get the menu, then select "Delete".

Less than a week after I got mine, price dropped by $10. Not a big deal, but slightly annoying.

Roku demands a credit card to register the device (you can't do anything without registering it). Once you are up and running, you can go into your profile on the Roku site and delete the card info with a button on lower right of the screen. You will not, however, be able to order any paid content without a credit card registered.

The remote (which is not IR but wireless of some sort) goes comatose every once in a while. Generally, pushing one of the volume buttons on its side tends to wake it up.

Other Thoughts: To all of you who complain about the non-responsive remote, READ THE MANUAL. The entire thing is just a few pages long, and you won't exhaust your lips doing so. Seriously. Many of you should not be allowed anywhere near sharp instruments.

Since I have external optical audio components, I also bought an HDMI switcher with optical out to integrate the thing into my system.
