Pros: Compact self-contained unit with aesthetically pleasing design. Built-in wifi is a plus.

Cons: It just doesn't work. I bought it to place shift my TiVo along with another Vulkano Flow. Setup was not very difficult, when the box actually booted up, but the hardware/software is garbage. With updated firmware the box would not stream reliably. Had to downgrade the firmware to get it to work. After unplugging the unit it would fail to turn back on. Just sits there with a red light. Don't buy this unless you have a lot of time to kill and don't mind trying to get it to turn on for hours.

Other Thoughts: Bad implementation of a good idea. If you want to place shift your TV to another TV, look for another solution.

5 out of 5 eggsVulkano Lava - Great Selection

Pros: Hooked up to my Whole Home DirecTV HR22-100. Hardwired Ethernet to my wireless router. Figured since everything was in my home office, I'd hard wire. Internet is 30 Mbps with 7 Mbps upload.

Setup was fast and easy. Had everything hooked up and working in less than a half hour.

150G external hard drive hooked up to USB port works well. Plenty of recording space for my needs. Most of my recordings will be watched from one of three HD DVRs in my network. All can be viewed through my Vulkano Lava.

Even though there is a one time charge for the app per device, the $12.99 is a few bucks cheaper than Slingbox and is well worth the money. By the way, the app is free for Windows and Mac PC.

I've watched TV on my 2d generation iPad (great resolution with wifi...3G not so good), my wifi pc and hardwired pc @ work.

I've never owned a Slingbox but the Vulkano Lava is very nice and a good bit cheaper. In my opinion and based on all reviews that I could find on the web. The Vulkano has more possibilities for future expansion is easier to set up and performs much better. I would definitely recommend this even for a novice electronics geek.

Side note for first time users...You can turn the DVR power off and on when not in use so that it's not running constantly. You can turn it on and off from any of your player devices, using the remote from the menu. The Vulkano Lava is powered on all the time.

Cons: I did have one problem with my initial set up. Everything worked fine on my iPad and on my wifi windows pc but I could not get a picture on my TV. I went through the complete setup procedure several times, including reconnecting all wiring, to no avail. So I turned to online tech help, explaining my problem as detailed that I could and I had a response (during normal week-day work hours Eastern time zone) in less than a half hour. There were two suggestions and the first one worked right away. The tech rep suggested that I go into a detailed setup section and change the setting to my configuration which was "Component" video input. Changed from a default of "Composite". This has worked flawless on my TV since. Quite satisfied with my first and only encounter with tech support.

The best picture quality for the Vulkano Lava is wired with Component video. This unit does not offer HDMI. Hooked up to a 22" 720p Insignia TV from Best Buy is fine for my home office use. But this unit should be manufactured with HDMI.

Not flawless, need patience at times. Settings need to be adjusted manually from time to time to match streaming speeds both wifi and streaming hard wire from a computer at a site outside of home.

Has great place for apps but the only app is YouTube, available on DirecTV, pc, iPad app and smart phone app.

Other Thoughts: Even though the Vulkano Lava is not perfect, and I was expecting something a bit less, it is a great addition to my entertainment on the go network. I really don't see where one can go wrong, especially for the money.

If you are a fence rider or a person that shops things to death, stop and order a Vulkano.

3 out of 5 eggsFunctions as expected

Pros: Simple setup for those who have installed a VCR, good connection speeds and reliable remote, Saved me hundreds in cable bills.

Cons: No Proxy support, so I can't get around network firewalls.
Windows program will occasionally show black screen with audio and require a reboot to fix.
Frustrating communication with Tech support

Other Thoughts: I don't use if for home viewing, but reliable when I was visiting in Germany, Japan, and Dubai.

This is a better deal than a Slingbox.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Great Product

Pros: Works great and picture is amazing
Quick and easy to setup
streaming over 3G and 4G is smooth. 3G you might get some hesitation, I have verizon for personal and ATT through work and ATT seemed more jumpy.
When in your network it works great

Cons: If you have a verizon fios box and have a network DVR that all boxes share in order to use DVR functions you need to set them all up as the same model box as the master DVR

Other Thoughts: This is a great alternative to sling box. I have had to reboot it every like 2 months to just refresh it but setup was easy and it configures everything to access external. My one disappointment is that it does through there servers. I would prefer to setup my own remote access with IP and firewall rules. But this is probably because I am a Systems Engineer and work on computers. For the regular person it probably works better letting there servers handle it. Overall, I am looking to purchase another one.

5 out of 5 eggsWOO HOO the first review

Pros: So Far, this product is something I have always wanted for my cable box, due to the fact that I have wanted to keep the cable box in the living room. I do most of my TV watching on my computer, in another room, with a TV tuner card, and I’m too cheap to rent an extra box, thus I can’t watch the HD channels because I am limited to the analog signal. (that was until I got the Vulkano). I use the HDMI out for the TV the Vulkano sits next too, and picture quality between original cable box and vulkano is the same. Once you tell the Vulkano to play live TV you don’t have to change it again when you turn on the TV again. (TV, Vulkano and Cable box are located in the same room) Now I can stream my HD channels to my computer and ipad (through Wi-Fi) to the room where I keep my desktop...

Cons: A few down sides - there is about a 15 second delay between the live broadcast when streaming to your computer… I only realized this when I was listening to a same channel being played in another room..(It was like listening to the future). Also the IR blaster takes up to 7 seconds to change the channel over the network so you have to be patient. I haven’t tried to stream video outside of my LAN but I really don’t intend too..

Other Thoughts: Set up was straight forward and the picture quality was better than I expected especially when I am on the HD channels. I had to boot into windows so I could point the device to my wireless rougher, once set up I could use it on my mac. If someone changes the channel on the TV the volcano is plugged into, then that will be the channel that is streamed to on whatever device you are streaming to and vice-versa.
