1 out of 5 eggsDOA after 30 days of use

Pros: Great when it worked

Cons: DOA after 30 days

Other Thoughts: Unit DOA after 30 days of use. Worked great while operational. I'm hopeful that an exchange is possible and easy to come by.

3 out of 5 eggsBeware of hype and spin

Pros: product is really outstanding, but the marketing leaves a bad taste. See cons for what it really does...
Best part of the product is that it really works. It pushes SD quality video across the internal network which can be viewed on phones, tablets and PCs.

Cons: Marketing twist #1: The box comes with a WiFi icon next to the product and states: Watch live HD TV on upto 2 devices simultaneously on your wifi network. HOWEVER: it has nothing to do with WiFi. It has a 100BaseT wired connection and no WiFi. They could even claim you can watch on iphones on cellular if somehow the Internet would not block it.
Marketing twist #2. One click of our App to view live TV on Andriod or iOS. HOWEVER: Most companies give the client away when you spend the kind of money for this product. They charge on both iOS (If you want to hear audio) and Android for the client. The one click app stated on the box, is NOT part of the product you purchase.
Marketing twist #3. Note that it has a 100BaseT connection which gives a max of 14MB/s throughput. Each channel on high quality needs 6-8MB/s of throughput to work. You can see that it is a very tight fit to have 2 high quality channels. Note they only claim it produces 1080 and has 2 channels. They never claim you can run both channels at the same time as high quality.
Other issues: Most of the clients do not buffer enough. Due to network variance, you will get freezes and lack of audio at the start. Placing the client on pause for 10 seconds will correct the issue. By default, the system solution they provide does not allow for buffering so you cannot pause and then fast forward later, even though the clients all has fast forward and fast backup buttons. I was not expecting DVR capabilities... They never claimed you can pause and then come back and speed through commercials. Only "live" streaming.

Other Thoughts: On iPhone 5, I was not able to received high quality on iPhone. it would freeze. On transcode=mobile, with slower frame rates and lower quality TV, it worked fine. For iPhones, check out Creation 5/2. It works well except it does not use transcode=mobile. I have sent email to developers to see if they can correct the issue. Also, running it within Kodi. It works OK there as well.

Beyond all the marketing spin that is going on, the product is an excellent idea and I believe it to be what will be for the future.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat products

Pros: I have been using their products for over two years. They have great compatibility if you know what you were doing, they are in the process of making a complete home DVR solution and once complete should be easy enough for your mom to even set up. I am in the beta for the system being developed and it has been a bumpy ride so far but now things are becoming more stable. Soon enough they will start most likely adding new features once they work out the bugs with the current features.

Cons: Nothing much to put here so long as you know about networking and hopefully soon you won't even need to know that when they are done with the DVR platform.

2 out of 5 eggsIt could be good, but not quite

Pros: Looks good and easy setup.

Cons: There is zero activity indicators and the software provided is even more terrible. I had to use VLC on the computer to try and get it to play anything (when other devices on the same antenna had no issues). Far too much effort and couldn't get it to play right on the iPhone without paying for a $12 app.

Other Thoughts: This could be a great device but it needs a lot more work before being ready for the market.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat network attached tuner - requries some networking knowledge

Pros: Nice network attached tuner. What I like is being able to run a short coax cable from the antenna to this tuner and then extend with Cat 6 cable to the network switch. Eliminates long runs and loss associated with coax & couplers. Am using with xbox one (DLNA), xbox 360 (windows media center), ms windows 7 & 8.1, plex (via unofficial plugin), android OS.

Cons: The user should have some familiarity with networking to make this tuner work across many platforms. Using silicon dusts HDHomeRun viewer is a breeze though on any windows PC or android. Some other platforms are not officially supported so take some work to get configured.

Other Thoughts: I would never go back to using the tuners on my TVs after being spoiled having TV on my network. I have owned this device for about 6 months. Considering purchasing a second to attach to an antenna pointed in a different direction so I can pull in those stations as well. I held back on one egg due to I really would like to see more official support across platforms such as Roku, XBOX ONE, plex, etc. It's really up to the user at this point to make it work with these platforms by reading up on the forums, etc.

Pros: all good... I have 3 windows PCs with Windows Media Center all sharing the two tuners.

Cons: nothing bad... it does what it claims to do

2 out of 5 eggsJust OK, passes surround

Pros: This rating is based on 20141210 firmware and software.

2 tuners via home network.
Adjustable compression level per device(not per channel)
All based on a 1080i input, with Dolby Digital audio output.
Native is full bandwidth. peaks at 20mbit. averages 15mbit
Heavy down converts to 720p. Less than 10mbit.
Mobile further compresses. averages 4mbit.

Does not affect audio on any setting. That gives it 2 eggs in my book.

Cons: Default compression level is applied to all channels. Some of the weather and oldies should be left Native. Even in native I am seeing 2mbit on busy scenes.
New software fails short badly. Either it works, or it doesn't. Tech support is aware, but no word on if they even care. I've tried to ask for help in Forum and directly.
Supposedly VLC Player is their work around. But even that gives me issues.

Other Thoughts: With the previous firmware and software life was great. The software was simple, and I used another website for TV guide info. The new software tries to tie in TV guide data into a new view program. Their forum is full of disgruntled users. Only work around it to install software 20140604. Current firmware seems OK with the old software, and probably preferable if there are system fixes.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great tuner. Am using it with Mythtv on opensuse Linux. For Linux there is an application to download from the web and compile. This allows you to query the device from command line and with a GUI. From the GUI you can watch TV using VLC.

Cons: The unit I received was initially DOA - would get no network address. A few days later it then started working for a week and then failed again. Submitted a ticket with Silicondust and they RMA the return and sent me a new one. From reading the reviews this seems to common an occurrance.

The fan on both units is excessively noisy compared to all the other computer equipment I have. Definately something that needs located where away from where you sit.

Other Thoughts: With a quiet fan and an initial working unit, this would get 5 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsWork great

Pros: I use these with JRiver to watch over the air TV. They work great.

Cons: The HD light on the front of the unit does not turn off. I would prefer to have it off, or used for a purpose (light when active).

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: If you get a working unit. it great with WMC 7/8 and many other backend PVR software. 1 hour of h264 recorded video comes out around 2GB @ 720p.

Cons: Got a bad unit. Even with lastest firmware 2014112 it locks up/freezes within 10 minute of use. It overheated and fan stops working. Afraid it would catch fire. RMA replacement and it is working fine. Not sure if newegg has bad batch for Silicondust RMA out hardware revision.

Why do I need to purchase the Android & iOS app if I want to use it on mobile devices? Expected it to be free.

The typical grandma won't be able configure it. It's not so user friendly.

Other Thoughts: Customer support was nice and fast. RMA unit fedex immediately after you notify them of your return shipment.
