5 out of 5 eggsChromecast for Plex

Pros: Sin-simple to set up and get going. Supports Plex (the reason I bought it), Netflix, Hulu, Youtube and a bunch of other media-oriented apps I doubt I'll ever use but it's nice to have the capability.

Cons: It doesn't project isometric holograms?

Other Thoughts: Bought this little guy to use in conjunction with my Plex media server, and the setup was a breeze and Plex connected/streamed to it right away. Zero complaints. If you don't have a recent Smart TV with a Plex app or some equivalent appliance, this is the way to go.
The first thing I streamed to it was my highest bitrate movie file and it handled it without observable issue, stutter or buffering. You can't go wrong.

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds more content, but still good for what it does

Pros: The Chromecast is okay for what it needs to do. That being sad, streaming Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Plex is great. It's quick, easy to setup, and provides a nice "smartTV" feel.

Cons: I really wanted more from what you could stream or display onto the Chromecast. Playing your own media is difficult especially without purchasing some other applications (Plex), and even then, sometimes navigation and usage isn't the easiest.

Kind of strange that you always need some kind of power source plugged into the device in order to have it working. It does take up a USB spot or an outlet so be prepared if you want to keep it on.

2 out of 5 eggsPerformance degrades over time.

Pros: Can be used to watch videos and movies on any HDMI enabled TV. Great with PC, tablets and even faster smart phones.

Cons: If your TV doesn't have a USB port, then you have to keep the device plugged in all the time, which means it gets HOT!!!

Over time with the device continually being hot it becomes harder and harder to connect to connect to the WiFi and eventually stops working. Even resetting it doesn't do much after some months. I've had mine less than a year and it has recently stopped communicating altogether. I can see it but it won't connect anymore. Its way too late to return it now.

Also it only uses the lower 2.4GHz frequency, so you cant have a lot of devices connected all at once. I bought a new router to help with the problem, and it did but too many devices still brings Chromecast to its knees.

Other Thoughts: For $35 its a decent device but its limitations and heat problems over time make this a less than desirable product. Someone with the latest model TV wouldn't have a problem as the device's USB power would shut off with the TV but that person would probably buy a better device.

4 out of 5 eggsChromecast

Pros: Streams media from any device with the chromecast application.
HDMI
Wireless

Cons: Cost - I purchased the product before comparing it with other sites. (Oops. -- Usually Newegg is good on prices so I don't bother to check. Wont make that mistake again...) This item was recently listed as $49.95 with free shipping. Other sites had it as cheaper.

Other Thoughts: Newegg recently dropped the price.

I purchased this as a gift for my father who often uses his iPad to stream Netflix and Youtube. He is now streaming on his 50" flat screen.

2 out of 5 eggsNot for everybody

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Not as good as I thought it would be.

Other Thoughts: First of all this is not an alternate device for Roku 3. I have Roku 3 and I love it. But I want to be able to stream other stuff that I can't get from the box and just happen to have a gift card so I got it from local store. Setup was a breeze. But not at all that impress with picture quality though. I have cable with speed over 60 MBps download and picture still look choppy sometimes, and there's no 1080p streaming only extreme 720p. This device is definitely not for everybody.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Cool

Pros: Works awesome with specific app ready products such as netflix, hbogo, hulu, youtube, etc. No lag at all. I already knew the limitations and the perceived thought that it should do more but for the price its well worth it even for what it actually does.

Cons: Wish you could use chrome browser on phone to project to TV. Chrome on desktop has a lag if you stream flash. It may depend on how much content is on the website as well.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected.

Pros: Works great with Google Cast and YouTube with no lag. I like how you can actually start a video and it will turn on Chromecast on your TV. Essentially it switches the TV source to Chromecast automatically.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Some people complained about lag or choppy video with usage in Google Cast. I think Chromecast and/or Chrome have been updated because I haven't had any issues with lag. I can watch videos with the no problems.

It would be nice if they eventually come up with the ability to play movies that are on a local machine. Something like Roku.

4 out of 5 eggsLike it, setup was tricky

Pros: Plays netflix, youtube, and other streaming video from my web browser in 1080p.

Cons: It was a bit tricky installing this. I couldn't use the usb connection on my TV because it overloaded the HDMI port and I had to unplug my TV for a minute to restore usage on the port. After I got through the initial power bugs, wifi install was hit and miss, but the device was eventually added to my wifi network and I was able to control the chromecast from any networked device with a chrome browser in my house. It took a little bit of pain to get the wonderful gain. Just be patient and keep researching if you run into problems.

Other Thoughts: I've been in IT for a while, so I had the patience and wherewithal to find good resources and tips to get this device working with my TV and on my network. If you aren't tech savvy, I wouldn't recommend this product unless you have a tech savvy member in your family. The product should technically be easy to get online, but there are thousands of cases where people ran into issues with their televisions not working properly with this device. Be warned!

1 out of 5 eggsGreat when working

Pros: When it works its one of the best devices I used!

Cons: Had the device for several months and then video play back started to degrade, constant freezing and interruptions. Brought the device to my workplace and the same problem persisted, I then ruled out my wifi configuration since my workplace had a chromecast already that worked fine. This device is great when it works but its shoddy build quality and internal parts really come to light as the device didnt even last 6 months, Best part is Newegg wont let me RMA it, and Google wont do anything for me either because I didnt buy it from them.

Other Thoughts: Be careful of google products!
