4 out of 5 eggsTake note of a cable you may need

Pros: - Sturdy construction
- Works and speeds are achieved
- Cooling (no, not "needed" for SSD drives, albeit, they account for people such as myself that may want to run 15k RPM SATA/SAS drives)

Cons: - Fan noise (but, really, it's a backplane, which usually suggests server, which usually suggests NOISE). So while I'm not going to go off on a tangent about it, it -is- still technically a con, but an understandable one (15k RPM SAS drives can get a tad warm/hot without adequate cooling which this unit provides and to do so on this size a unit means a high CFM/dB fan folks!)

- Insertion force - The top trays are a little tricky. I believe some silicon in the grooves of the tray will help with this situation while providing a NON-conductive lubricant in the process. The top ones should be inserted, then when the upper lip of the tray is about to meet the backplane, push in the center of the upper lip/metal of the tray just a tad and complete the insertion.

SFF-8484 - The Mini-SAS cable. I really do wish they would have had a SFF-8087 connection on this thing. I had to get the cable from M*price and that turned into one heck of a delay. Regardless. It is generous of them to provide the SATA to SFF 8484 cable though. BUT KNOW! If you have plans to use a RAID controller card that has the SFF-8087 (36 pin) connection on it (as most do), you'll too need a SFF-8087 to SFF-8484 Forward cable. Get this now from Newegg (there is a Tripplite one currently for sale here) else, you'll be going back for it later holding up your build.

Other Thoughts: None. I trust SuperMicro. Their documentation may leave little to be desired by the enthusiast, though, are meant for the experts so-to-speak. Sure, they have dipped their toes into the consumer side of the market, they're primary customers are those interested in workstation/server needs -- and I am fine with that.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great - Beware the cable

Pros: Does exactly what it's supposed to.I have 2 SSD's and 2 5400rpm drives installed. No heat issues at all, even with the fan disabled.

Cons: The rails used to slide the caddies in and out are a little finicky so you need to use care sliding drives in and out. The fan is very loud. I have mine disabled..

Other Thoughts: The supplied data cable is a SFF-8484 CROSSOVER cable. I needed a longer cable to reach from the motherboard SATA ports to this unit at the top of a full tower case. I ended up using SATA extension cables as I was unable to find a longer crossover cable.

4 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: It's supermicro.

Cons: THANK YOU GUMMADOOM

This should be in the manual:
Cable order as followed
drive 0 to cable labeled P4
drive 1 to cable labeled P3
drive 2 to cable labeled P2 (only match)
drive 3 to cable labeled P1

Behind each drive caddy it is numbered 0-3. The cables are marked as above.

I just don't understand why this isn't stated in the manual or why they chose to number as such...

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Sturdy metallic construction. Only uses 1 molex connector for power. Fits every 2.5" drive that I've put in it. Easy to install.

Cons: Drive trays can be difficult to slide in sometimes. Loud fan.

Other Thoughts: I bought this, so I could have easy access to the 2 HDDs and 2 SSDs in my computer. Installation was straight-forward, and easy. I really like the special SAS cable that came with the unit, because it keeps all my data cables together. The trays can be difficult to slide into the unit sometimes and the fan is fairly loud, but I did not think it was necessary to take away any eggs for those minor issues.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect redux

Pros: with another system requiring quick access of sata III ssds, i purchased another.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: to the reviewer with activity light issues, supermicro tech support was correct: it comes down to the drives, and the motherboard ports/hba/raid card used, if and when and how activity will be registered regarding this bays lights. thank you newegg for carrying this product at a great price!

1 out of 5 eggsNot Good

Pros: Does disk I/O without errors.

Cons: Power & activity LEDs do not come on.
Tray insertion/extraction is very difficult, imprecise.
Very noisy cooling fan.

Other Thoughts: Tech support was unable to solve the problem of per-tray power & activity LEDs not lighting up. They conveniently blame it on the motherboard. Mechanically, it's a poor product. The tray design makes insertions and extractions a struggle, a trial-and-error every single time. It features the noisiest cooling fan I have ever heard, so much I had to disable it. I returned the product and bought a StarTech SATSASBAY425, which is perfect.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: perfect solution for my raided ssds (one signal cable in from the raid card, one molex to power all drives). quality pcb and tray components. for the price, this is the one to get.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: some might find the fan a bit loud. i removed mine. if you do remove/disable the fan, remember to disable the unit's alarm. this unit has an alarm that will warn the user that the fan is not functioning. pretty neat.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Great space saver. Saved me from using 8 slots with adapters to seat 8 2.5 inch SSDs. Simplified power cabling mess too. I got 8 drives in 2 slots. Not bad!

Cons: I took off the small fan at back for my 4 SSD to reduce noise (they don't make much heat and my case is a wind tunnel to start with. Cable provided has 8484 connector which made it difficult to connect to my Areca RAID controller and needed special cabling. I would be fine to connect to motherboard for most as the other end was SATA.

Other Thoughts: I have had a couple of times were a drive has fallen off line and it needed to be reseated. My RAID then simply fixed itself but if this was critical data on single drive I would have been more than upset.

5 out of 5 eggsAbout the "proprietary" cable

Pros: First off, I'm buying one. Second, it appears to me the cable to use when connecting to a sas raid card, sff-8087 for example would be the sff-8484 to sff-8087, sold here on newegg, made by adaptec. this better work.

Cons: we'll see.

Other Thoughts: I should have written this after I bought and setup all the hardware. Sorry guys :p

4 out of 5 eggsSolid but proprietary cable

Pros: Solid construction. The best feeling and looking SSD cage I have bought to date.

Cons: Comes with a proprietary cable that will not work with my 3Ware Raid controller. A previous reviewer stated they make alternate cables...I will investigate.

Other Thoughts: 1 Egg deducted for the special cable
