1 out of 5 eggsDOES NOT SUPPORT SERVER 2012 or RAID 10

Pros: Quiet and Fair price

Cons: The motherboard does NOT support Server 2012 or Raid 10 as specified. I paid a technician $2,500 to get this machine up and running. They tried everything. In the end, the best they could do was load a discontinued copy of Server 2008 on Raid 5 and only have access to 2TB of hard drive space. This system is falsely advertised by SUPERMICRO. Also, newegg offers bundle and save with server 2012, why do this if it is not supported by the motherboard?

Other Thoughts: Doe Not support and current server software by Microsoft.

5 out of 5 eggsGood server bad newegg support

Pros: Once I got it going it runs very well and very quite. Supermicro support is very nice and helped me the entire time(Newegg refused to lift a finger to help me). This is a 5 star product. The support I got from Supermicro made up for any downfalls of the product itself.

Cons: Came with a bent cpu pin I was told to go through supermicro to fix it. sent it in and the power supply was also bad and newegg told me they will not rma it had to send it to supermicro to fix it 3 months after I bought it. The support I got from Supermicro made up for the downfalls of the product itself.

The support I got from newegg makes me want to give it 0 but that is not fair to the product.

Other Thoughts: My rating is based off of the product and not from the support I got from newegg. Newegg charged me twice for this server and got an overdraft. Newegg refused to refund me never shopped on newegg since.

Newegg's rating 0-5
this server 5-5

3 out of 5 eggsTerrible Customer Service from SuperMicro

Pros: Solid system, handles our Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software without a problem.

Cons: This is a great system, however, I am not pleased with SuperMicro's RMA service. This system was running for about a week, and then we got an alarm stating that there was a power issue with the power supply. I contacted SM and they said v2.0 power supplies were defective and stated in an email that v2.1 would correct this. They sent a replacement, except they sent another v2.0, now I have to pay shipping to send this unit back. Terrible service on SM's behalf.

5 out of 5 eggsLovely Barebone

Pros: Well build- rock solid chassis

Included CPU heat-sinks and fans are beefy and provide cooling for even the most demanding applications.

Included power supply is also quite capable of handling most server/workstation demands.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Running this for a cad workstation- the system runs like a champ.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple and Easy

Pros: No troubleshooting or mess. Put it the rest of items and it boots on the first try which is rare.

Cons: Sata 2 and didn't get cpu fans which the pictures shows

Other Thoughts: If you want a stress free setup get this!

5 out of 5 eggsGeat Workstation

Pros: Worked out-of-the-box, Very quiet, Very low heat output, roomy box with ample room for cables, addon cards, etc.

Cons: Very large box, 45.5 in long 17.75 in high, But it's a workstation...right?
Difficult to add in DVD drive. Need extra long sata cable to reach top of box(ie 36"). Had to add 3ware card to use all eight drives.

Other Thoughts: My config: 2 Xeon E5620, 24GB Crucial DDR3 1066 Model CT3KIT51272BA1067 (sold at newegg), 3ware 9650SE-4LPML, VisionTek 900307 Radeon HD 4670, Western Digital RE4 WD5003ABYX,
Make sure you check your processor for memory supported before you buy.
Had problems loading drivers for Redhat, switched to Win7 professional and everything loaded perfectly.
Using this box for work and a virtual server. Running four VM's; two Win7 vms and two Ubuntu Vms. Can run all simultaneously with no hiccups to the host.
This buld was a little pricey but hey it now equals five computers with room to grow.
This is a great machine!!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent choice for Hyper-V

Pros: I bought this server for Hyper-V. Add a LSI/3ware 9650SE-4LPML PCI E x4 RAID Controller and 4x1TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration. Add 2x1TB and 2x.5TB on the onboard controller both in mirror configuration. All drives SATA. Two Xeon’s E5606. 48 GB of memory (KVR1333D3D4R9S/8G). Install Windows 2008 R2 SP1 and not a single glitch. Great product. The best thing: This server is whisper quiet. Server never exceed 105F and CPU stay at Low temperature.

Cons: Extreme low noise. Motherboard support 6 drives, server support 8 drives. PCIe x4 support many makes of RAID controller cards.

Other Thoughts: Server supports up to 96 GB of memory. Packaging is excelent. Included CPU Fans easy to install.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Workstation

Pros: This is my first experience with Supermicro and an extremely positive one.
Very well build Barebone. Solid, heavy , clean, all cables are neatly tucked away. Plenty of Fans (7) in that case and the system is still surprisingly quit.
It’s very fast – I get 434MB/s, average 313MB/s in a RAID5 with 6 Seagate ST31000528AS.

Cons: No VGA onbord in case you want to use it as a Server!

Other Thoughts: No RAID5 with the Adaptec RAID Setting. No Hotspares with Intel RAID Setting.

Only a maximum of 6 of the 8 Drivebays can be used with the onboard SATA Controller.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat System

Pros: Great case design. On par with an Apple Mac Pro for neatness, airflow and cleanliness. Lots of room for expansion. Makes a beast of a workstation. Comes with two great heat sink/fans so that is one less thing to buy.

Cons: Only cons are that the fan array is set for four 80mm fans but it only comes with two. Also, it has 8 hot swappable drive bays but only 5 usable sata ports so you have to use a raid card to get the benefit of all 8 bays.

Other Thoughts: I put in two 5620 quad core Xeons, 24Gb Ram and an ATI 5870 video card and this thing flies. I have done audio/video encoding, gaming, built virtual machines and watched a movie all at the same time with no noticeable performance drop.

3 out of 5 eggsWould be great...But!

Pros: good design layout; built like a tank; seems to provide adequate performance for the pricerange (assuming you put quality components in it and configure it correctly)

Cons: I would like to give this five eggs but I have to only give it three for the following reasons: there are documentation mismatches between the supermicro documents and included manual. Manual says it includes a firewire cable but supermicro parts list says NO. EVEN IF YOU HAVE AN ADDON SATA SONTROLLER THE DISK BACKPLANE WILL ONLY SUPPORT SATA DRIVES IN THE LOWER SIX BAYS. THE TWO UPPER BAYS ARE UNUSABLE. This is a firmware problem that Supermicro denies. Supermicro's non-american tech support staff were in my opinion, not competent to help solve the issue.

Other Thoughts: Its is extremely quiet compared to my old 32bit xeon machine. It has adequate support for environmental sensors and should meet my needs for the next six years or so. Works well with Fedora Linux 14 using software raid (mdadm only).
