1 out of 5 eggsJust over two years, then poof

Pros: Small footprint, quiet operation.

Cons: Raid is intel ICH10R software raid, so no good for vmware.

After a bit over two years of operation, the system has failed. Both power supplies sit there clicking. Occasionally the fans come on and it looks like it's booting, then just shuts down again.

No telling if it's the power supplies, motherboard or what.

It's out of warranty, so it's getting taken out back and shot.

Will not buy supermicro again.

5 out of 5 eggsgot 2 of them, been working great

Pros: have had this model for over 2 years, no problems

Cons: you have to provide "cons" for a product, ok sure, its low profile- just be sure you get low profile add-on cards; also the device has slots for 8 drives but mobo only has 6 ports- not that it matters cuz I'm not using the built-in sata.

one of the heat sinks that came with was bent-up badly, supermicro shipped me a good one.

Other Thoughts: been running vmware esx 4.1, been working great

5 out of 5 eggsSuperMicro Rocks!

Pros: This machine has a great build quality and is an excellent value for the price. Just like all the other SuperMicro server chassis I have used previously, this one does not disappoint. This is a barebones chassis which lets you customize the server with the type of attributes you need to suit the workload you want to throw at it.

Using it with an Adaptec 6805 RAID controller to get over 21TB of storage using RAID 5EE in this nice compact 2U server using only 8 drives.

Performs great and is running like a champ!

Cons: The current revision of the motherboard that ships with this machine is newer than what it indicated in the paper manual included with it. The CPU and RAM socket layouts are different on the motherboard than what is shown in the paper manual. The silkscreen on the board is correct of course, and is consistent with what you will see by downloading the latest PDF version of the manual from the SuperMicro website.

The DVD/CD drive is actually a USB device. This means that you can accidentally software eject the device - which of course you do not normally want to do.

Like most SuperMicro 2U machines with the 8 drive backplane, only six of the bays are connected due to that being the maximum number of SATA devices the motherboard natively supports.

Other Thoughts: SuperMicro support has always been excellent anytime I have ever contacted them for support on any of their SuperServer machines. Even for machines that are well out of warranty, they have always been helpful!

1 out of 5 eggsdead system

Pros: cheap price

Cons: bought 2 system from Newegg, 1 works and 1 dead
Returned to Newegg for RMA and they send me back the original dead unit. After months of waiting, Newegg tells me to contact manufacture.

1 out of 5 eggsNot long lasting for a server

Pros: See my original review from 1/18/2011

Cons: See my original review from 1/18/2011

Other Thoughts: I gave this server rave reviews when I purchased it 16 months ago and it's been humming along until recently. Last week it halted with a low voltage indicator on the RAID controller. Replaced the RAID controller and same thing (tried 2 different brands, different slots, etc - all controllers work fine in other servers as well). It appears there's a problem with either the mobo or the power supply. Considering this unit is in a temp controlled room with plenty of air flow it should have lasted way more than 16 months.

Called Supermicro - best they can do is have me send it in for depot service with no estimate on repair costs (it's outside the 1yr parts warranty) or timeframe. So much for being a good server. At this point I would have been better off spending 2x the cost on a Dell unit with better warranty and onsite service.

5 out of 5 eggsPower!

Pros: I've had two of these running for over a year. Rock solid with 2 six core Xeons. Very fast for server type loads.

Cons: Has 8 SATA trays, all 8 have power, but only 6 are connected. So buy a cheap PCI-E/SATA card if you need 8 SATA running. Weighs as much as a large rock. Fill it full of disk drives and you will exceed 70 pounds, which means if you reship you will pay overweight charges.

Other Thoughts: I'm buying 5 more, so you know I like them. Supermicro has always been quick to RMA motherboards when purchased in a server. I wish Newegg stocked the IPMI option card.

4 out of 5 eggsHad to replace MB after 4 mo

Pros: Powerful system, handles all the needs of my office

Cons: This unit was placed into service about 4 months ago. Motherboard failed on Wednesday night for no clear reason. Supermicro did overnight a new MB and system is back up and running again.

Other Thoughts: This is a mission critical server in our office. To have it out of service for 1.5 days is a huge drain.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Excellent build quality. Now set up with qty 6 3tb drives. Replaced my old bacula backup server. 2 more drives (OS) on mirror with 3ware sata raid controller.

Cons: Manual is incorrect about the location on the motherboard for cpu1 and cpu2 and memory. It is backwards. Also flashing red leds on 2 of the hard drive bays. Disconnecting unused cables (for sas) from backplane cleared the flashing red lights.

Other Thoughts: The majority of our production servers are Dell or HP. This server has the same or better build quality. I was impressed with this server when setting it up. I may start using these in production more often. Linux (ubuntu serve 10.04) handled all of the hw fine.

4 out of 5 eggsMuch better than the 1U

Pros: * Clean easy to work on server (cable routing from front to back is great compared to other servers chassis I've worked on).
* 8 x 3.5" bays provide for a nice size RAID.
* Includes 2 CPU heat sinks.
* Includes DVD/CD-ROM

Cons: * Very noisy, even for a server (comparing to ASUS chassis and Dell/HP systems).
* No documentation on the hotswap drive back plane (never have figured out how to connect the RAID card's drive activity connectors properly).
* Built in RAID is SOFTWARE, not true hardware (this seems to be common in almost all low to mid range server chassis unfortunately)

Other Thoughts: Set this up as our 3rd VMWare ESXi 4.1 server. I installed an Areca 1222 RAID controller (requires downloading drivers from VMWare) but so far it has worked fantastic.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid server for a great price

Pros: Solid construction, great cooling design, fairly quiet, plenty of config options. I'm running several of these with x5650 processors 96GB ram, and 8xSATA drives in RAID5 config. It runs lots of VMs without any problems. Easy to configure, and if you're using the on-board RAID, choose the Intel BIOS, it lets you do RAID5. Just make sure you're RAIDs are < 2TB.

Cons: Nothing at the moment.

Other Thoughts: If you're using SATA drives, disconnect the sideband cable (which you only need for SAS drives) from the backplane and the red drive error LEDs will stop flashing.
