5 out of 5 eggsAbsolute Workhorse!

Pros: Can handle 64 physical CPU cores and more memory than I need. The built in IPMI interface make remote management a breeze. I can assemble a unit and install it on a rack, sit at my desk and install an OS remotely start to finish without ever looking at it again.
All the hot swappable stuff is in the front making disaster recovery easy. It even comes with a bonus hard drive space in the front for a seventh single 3.5" drive (two 2.5" drives would fit with an adapter) though, it's not on the hot swap backplane.
Mounting hardware and sliding rails come with it.
Turn the fans to full power and it might push your rack across the room.

Cons: Raid 5 capability cost a bit extra.
It'll run with one CPU but not all PCI slots will work with only one.

Other Thoughts: I've got 6 of these running in a rack in a datacenter for over two years now. I've had only one power supply gracefully go bad. (It emailed me to let me know it died) I had it replaced quickly and under warranty. Supermicro's phone support is responsive, reasonable and free.
I'm running everything from virtualized windows server instances to SQL servers to security camera DVRs.

5 out of 5 eggsRock solid

Pros: Everything is pro on this system.
Quad socket, quad Interlagos.
32x DDR3 1600 slots.
Excellent PCIe bandwidth w/ 2x16x and 2x8x.
IPMI w/iKVM

Absolute maximum bang for the lowest dollar.

We replaced one of the front bays with a 2x2.5" hotswap in 3.5" for enterprise SSD's, still giving us all six built-in SAS/SATA hotswaps.

Airflow is extreme, Supermicro sound. It shouldn't be anywhere you can hear it anyway - if it is, then you are not using it correctly.

Cons: CPU1 receives slightly lower airflow - no harm witnessed due to a degree's difference. Stick a fan on it if it makes you paranoid.

5 out of 5 eggsUpgradability at it's finest

Pros: It's the best bang for the buck if you need a single machine to outperform. Software licensing for me was the reason I didn't cloud. I have 6 of these instead, and with a pair of 16 core 2.2ghz chips in each with room to double that without needing more money in software, they're the best way to guarantee upgradability. These run laps around my dual Xeon box and at half the price. You'll need windows enterprise to run more than 32GB of ram, but you knew that already. IPMI is great when you rack them and don't want to bother with a KVM to connect them all. Once you drop in all the parts, connect it to lan and lock them up. You can install and administer OS remotely through IPMI. This feature would cost a few extra thousand if I went Dell. Make sure your software scales to many cores because by the time you're done upgrading, you'll have 64! There's even a hidden compartment in the front for another 3.5" or 2.5" hard drive! (not hot swap or removable without opening the top)

Cons: Firmware for the SAS2 controller needed an update out of the box to work with my 3TB drives. Can only have two simultaneous RAID volumes.

Other Thoughts: Fans that powerful are supposed to be loud. I'm running World Community Grid as a CPU burn in and the fans move so much air, I'm afraid my rack will start rolling across my office. The shroud makes sure enough air is directed into CPU1; leave it in.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent quad-CPU option, but be careful about cooling

Pros: Includes everything - case, motherboard, power, heatsinks, and cables - and is pre-wired. Very good build quality. Beefy variable-speed fans, built-in web-based control and console, enormous capacity for CPUs and RAM.

Cons: Poor cooling on CPU1, only four usable PCIe slots. Does anyone really need a 1400watts power supply?

Other Thoughts: I love this server, but it has some flaws. First, I really wish there were two more PCIe slots. Second, and a more important criticism, you should know that CPU1 receives significantly less airflow than the othe three CPUs, leading to significantly higher temperatures and possibly a shorter lifespan even in a climate controlled datacenter. I ended up replacing the provided passive heatsink on that CPU with one having an attached fan, which helped.

5 out of 5 eggsHigh quality product

Pros: High quality server, worked out of the box. Plenty of expansion ports. Built-in RAID (limited to 0, 1, and 10 - no 5 or 6). Dedicated IPMI port, which can be utilized for general networking. Excellent support from Supermicro's 24/7 SuperServer hotline.

Cons: Fans are loud at full speed, but if you set the BIOS fan settings to energy savings, they are quite tolerable. No cable management arm made by Supermicro to fit the server.

Other Thoughts: It would be great if this product came in 2.5" hard drive slot version - to really pack in the drives.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: 4 CPU sockets (caution: Windows 7 Pro/Ult will only recognize 2 CPU sockets; Ubuntu and Archlinux will recognize all sockets).
Lots of RAM slots. Supports up to 128 GB of UNBUFFERED RAM (and if you really want more, you can populate the slots with 8/16 GB registered sticks).

Everything is ready-to-go out of the box. Put in CPU, heatsinks (supplied), RAM cards (excruciatingly painful and enjoyable), and hard-drive.

Cons: The server did not boot at first with PCIe video card installed (no POST; really helpful), but eventually booted.

Onboard video must be disabled by jumper setting (not automatic; cannot be done through BIOS).

2U case: video card is limited to slim profile.

Fans are really loud.
Air shroud is useless.

Other Thoughts: 4 x AMD 8-core Opteron 6100 = 32 cores at 2.0 GHz each, in one box.
