Supermicro lets you take advantage of the increasing capacities of 3.5" form factor drives with the SYS-7046T-6F barebones server system. It is based on the Super X8DT6-F motherboard which accepts up to 2 QPI format quad-core/dual-core Xeon 5600/5500 Series processors. To support all the processing power you can install up to 192GB ECC Registered or 48GB ECC / Non ECC Unbuffered DDR3 memory.

The tower has 8 hot swappable 6Gbps SAS2 drive bays supporting RAID 0, 1 and 10. The motherboard has 6 SATA ports with the support of RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 (for Windows). All these fit into a high-density chassis. The whole thing is powered by an 80PLUS Platinum Certified, over 94% efficiency 920W power supply so the system will get all the power that it needs. The Supermicro SYS-7046T-6F is ideal for network infrastructure, front-end enterprise, and minimal-downtime cluster server systems.

It is a wonderful piece of engineering. You will be amazed by just looking at it. The internal cables are professionally routed, no clutter at all, everything feels clean. On the front, there are 8 hot swappable drive bays and 3 easily accessible 5.25 bays, all are high quality. Cons: The fans are quite loud, but it is ok since I put the server in basement. The good thing is the fans are removable, you can replace them with your own fans if you want to. Other Thoughts: I bought two cooler master N 520 92mm cpu cooler, but end not using them because the server comes with two passive fanless heatsinks. The passive heatsink is more than enough to cool the cpus since there is an air duct inside the server. Basically, the air duct direct the air flow around the heatsink to keep them cool. This review is from: SUPERMICRO SYS-7046T-6F 4U Tower Server Barebone Intel 5520 Dual LGA 1366 Dual Intel Xeon 5600/5500 Series Pros: Using it as a ZFS fileserver running OpenIndiana oi_148 with a single Xeon X5650 CPU and 12GB RAM (3x 4GB), installation went flawlessly and all hardware was detected properly. Performance is great. Uses passive CPU heatsinks (SYS7046A-T has active heatsinks) but has a nice easy to mount shroud for airflow. Cons: This model uses the long, narrow hot-swappable power supplies, and only comes with 1. It's quite a bit louder than the SYS7046A-T which we also have in production. If you're going to use the machine for home use, if it's not isolated into another room, you might want to consider one of their chassis with larger (quieter) power supply fans. 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful.
