4 out of 5 eggsGreat Light Server

Pros: Great box for an open source firewall. Quite enough to sit on your desk, small enough to go behind a switch or small racked device. Great IPMI. Running one as a firewall/vpn, another for front end web server.

Cons: Overview says that "It has 8 USB 2.0 ports..." it can... but it only has 2 via the case. Riser card should have been included. Its only a few bucks and there no way to use the PCI slot with out it. 3.5 Hard drive mounting bolts it to the case. I would prefer rubber stoppers or plastic washers over the wax paper that's used.

Other Thoughts: Box was huge for such a small server. Would have been nice if newegg included some under the hood shots. Front side USB would have been nice, but not a con. You can also get the same MoBo and case separate and build it for less. That's what I am going to do for a third unit.

5 out of 5 eggsAble Performer

Pros: Light and compact (around 10-12 lbs with 3.5" HDD); no worries at all about installing this on 2-post rails. Atom D510 is scary quick despite its reputation; Hyperthreading is a bonus! Indicator lights on the front are bright and easy to see. The board is laid out beautifully and installed to spec (sticker proudly announces that it is assembled in the USA). Connectors on the back are all solid; nothing feels cheap. Unit is quiet and runs cool. Available PS/2 connectors on back for you old-schoolers. Simple, easy-to-open chassis lid (5 screws) lifts off easily to give full access to the unit. No sharp edges or nasty surprises inside. Grated front and rear should allow for decent ventilation. Unit ships in manufacturer's carton, and is packed well (nearly surrounded by foam). Includes HDD mounting screws, Rack Screws and additional Motherboard mounting screws/standoffs (all in individually labeled bags; impressive). Manual is cleanly written and easy to understand.

Cons: Only two external USB ports (a third is actually located on the top of the motherboard, useful when doing an OS install but not much use once the lid is back on). The integrated Matrox g200e video is a capable standard but is really showing its age. No driver disk included, although Win 2k8 seems to have included drivers for all of the hardware. Supermicro's site is not a joy to navigate.

Other Thoughts: The MB takes up less than half of this case; this would be a fun project box for hackers (6 SATA ports on the MB). Motherboard and HDD are insulated by a plastic sheet with holes cut for screw mounting, so not much shock/vibration absorption here. HDD is mounted from the bottom, so if you're looking to use two 2.5" HDD, be sure to buy an adapter bracket that matches up with the bottom holes of a standard 3.5" (I recommend N82E16817997007). Power connector for second SATA disk is included but zip-tied to the leftover PS cables.

The only active cooling in the unit are the fans in the power supply; no fans on the MB and no case fans. Heat however should not be an issue with this unit even in minimal ventilation.

Installed Server 2008 R2 x64 for giggles and was impressed at how quickly it installed as well as ran; the D510 is really an impressive chip.

MB includes an x16 slot but the position of the mounted HDD would make squeezing any card in practically impossible.

3 out of 5 eggsBoot from SSD (Intel X25-V) failed

Pros: Seems adequate as file server.

Cons: Installed Ubuntu 10.4 on an Intel X25-V ssd. Installed ok. Boot went to blank screen with flashing cursor only. Intalled and booted to plain old Seagate Sata fine. Some odd incompatibility to the SSD.

Other Thoughts: Curious if anyone else gets this SYS-5015A-PHF to boot on the Intel (or other SSD).
Reading about the "trim" option in OS needed for SSD to keep performing, it's perhaps ok it doesn't work yet. :

5 out of 5 eggsNice!

Pros: Fairly quiet even with stock PSU. If used with two 2.5" hdds there is plenty of space. IPMI is killer, but no remote java support for Windows 7/ 2008 :( But can still power up or down the server remotely and do a health check on it. Pretty cool! Running 2 as redundant webservers. Very low power consumption. Case is very well made. Loving these! Buy em! Thx 'Egg!

Cons: No IPMI remote java client support for Win7/2008 yet! If you get it running let me know plz!
G200 video is pretty lacking. S'ok for 17" 4:3 monitor - widescreen's are gonna struggle for you. Search the web for new G200 driver's - they are out there. The Driver CD didn't have them? Just a folder. Odd...

Other Thoughts: Have two of these, a CyberPower 1U UPS, a D-Link Green Switch, and a 16-Port Patch panel all bought from Newegg in a 12" deep Startech rack (also bought here). Very cool setup! Very happy with 'Egg's shipping and speed.

5 out of 5 eggsSupermicro Struck Gold

Pros: This server is great. Inexpensive but with high end features like IPMI allowing remote bios level management. One could completely reload the server over vpn using virtual media, etc. Daul NICS for those wanting to use it as a router. ICH9 Chipset ATOM D510 shows up as 4 cores. I bought 6 and have a couple Ubuntu 10 servers running - 1 client I put SBS2008 on it ( :) and others running windows server 2008 R2 Web. They make no almost no noise - the Only fan is on the Power supply and are solid for the side and specs.

Cons: SO-DIMM Memory is more expensive but in a 1u footprint space is tight.

To mount a 2.5 in drive or 2 2.5 inch drives and raid them you must buy a 2.5 inch drive adapter or you can kinda hack it but yea.

Even tho it has a 16x on board PCI E and a slot on the case supermicro has not manufactured a riser card yet, I tried one of there other cards and it didn't work currently I have 1 unit with an intel 4x port nic using a "flex" riser card. it seems to be good but the card isn't as solid as i'd like with this being such a new product supermicro tech support said they will have a riser card in the future

Other Thoughts: You can't go wrong with this server. They are truly awesome.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is more like it!

Pros: Slick IPMI interface! Latest Atom revision, faster RAM, dual-core with more cache, dual GbE Intel network interfaces replace Realtek. They finally ditched IDE.

Cons: SO-DIMM (laptop) memory, using the PCI-E slot requires a riser (not included), only one 3.5" drive can be installed unless you buy a 2.5" drive chassis.

Other Thoughts: This makes for the perfect colo product for us. A whole server, with IPMI, for less than twice the cost of JUST the IPMI card for any other server.

3 out of 5 eggsno ide

Pros: easy ubuntu server 10.04 install, maybe an hour.

Cons: website and manual say there is an ide bus, but there is no ide bus. really disappointing. i was really looking forward to running the os on an ide drive and having 6 sata drives for extras.

Other Thoughts: no ide isn't enough of a disappointment to return, but it makes me wonder what else isn't true.
