Other Thoughts: We're using this RAID card in a handful of servers and it's always worked reliably for us.

Pros: Great SAS 6G adapter for the price, supports SAS/SATA drives and SAS expanders. Uses the LSI SAS2008 IO controller.

Cons: The mounting bracket is on the opposite side of the PCIe card along with all the components (side A instead of side B like other cards). It may not fit in all motherboards and/or chassis.
The MegaRaid storage manager software does not have an option for JBOD mode. It only suports RAID 0/1 and requires an upgrade key to support RAID 5 volumes. The workaround is to create a 1 drive RAID 0 volume for each attached hard drive. The OS will then see each drive as a drive volume. I use this mode to run software RAID 5 pr RAID 6 across all my drives attached to this controller.

Pros: Well, it's almost as advertised. This is Supermicro proprietary PCIe. The card is for a specific type of server slot and doesn't fit conventional. If I could have put a standard bracket on it. It would have worked fine, however, the bracket has the activity light attached to it.

Pros: Fast, immediately recognized by Win 7, solid bios

Cons: It made for a slimline server case, meaning the slot mount is reversed.
Needed a little modification to fit in a desktop case.
-1 star for desktop mounting issues

Other Thoughts: Aside from the mounting issue, it is a solid card with a LSI bios.
Requires 2x SFF-8087 SAS-SATA "forward" cable. These are inexpensive and widely available online, including at Newegg

If you have a server OR you are comfortable with a very easy mod of the mount for a desktop, this is a great card.

Pros: I have 20+ disks attached to this card via a chenbro SAS expander and have no problems running in JBOD mode. I run an older opensolaris distro (ZFS) with the mpt_sas drivers and it's very stable. I ended up making my own nylon spacers to fit this into a PCIe slot. Not a big deal. I've upgraded the firmware to the latest I can find - works great.

Cons: The heatsink gets a little hot, looks like it could easily be replaced (upgraded) since it's only held on by plastic clips. This card is likely made to be used in a streamlined server case with high airflow so the size of the heatsink is probably not designed for other form factors.

Pros: Fits in a UIO slot so it's an "extra" pcie slot on a server you could not otherwise use. Supports 63 drives via sas ex-panders, 8 ports native.

Cons: Supports 63 drives via sas ex-panders, will only will make 2 raid volumes at any time though. Will not export JBOD so you can only have 2 arrays with this card. They fail to mention the two raid set limitation till your deep in the manual.
