Pros: Quiet, efficient, inexpensive.

Unlike some reviews I've read, I never had trouble with overheating. Server closet at home doesn't have direct AC and ambient air temperature stays ~75F during the summer.

Cons: Network interfaces only worked for 4 months.

- One NIC started dropping twice a day for a week or so then started occurring more frequently to the point I couldn't sustain more than 5-7 pings before I would drop 30.

- The 2nd on-board NIC started the same pattern about a month later. Transferred both interfaces onto a 2-port network card I added and everything else worked fine.

Other Thoughts: Have the product out for RMA now.

I've built dozens of these to be used as PFSense firewalls. Never had a problem until I used this one at my house.

Pros: Quiet and low power

Other Thoughts: I added two fans http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608033 to this rig and it runs quiet and strong. To mount the fans we used double sided tape on the bottom of the fan and left the top bare (the top case holds it fine). We mounted them right at the front of the case. They are running at 23 - 30 C.

I have installed 3, using them for PFSense. Works like a charm.

Pros: I have been running pfSense on this server for awhile now and it's been great. I have had no problems and it has been running 24/7 since I got it. I averages 35c and is pretty quite.

Setting it up was pretty easy except I had to buy a bracket to hold two drives.

Cons: Bracket required to hold two drives.

Pros: 1. Extremely efficient
2. Intel NICs
3. Does support 8Gb of RAM
4. IPMI
5. Great chassis.

Cons: 1. Heats up quickly if kept in a rack.
2. Power supply fan can be noisy for some people.

Other Thoughts: In general, I love SuperMicro servers for their value as compared to other vendors. I have their Atom C2000 based server as well and they are great. This was no exception. It's perfect for a custom solution such as firewalls, infrastructure servers etc.

Note that this server gets really hot upto 90 degrees (CPU) if kept in an enclosure. There is an easy and perfect solution. Install a Fractal FD-FAN-SSR2-40. In fact, I installed 2 of these and now the temprature is 59 degrees for the CPU and 50 degrees for the system.

Also, it supports upto 8gb ram - 4gx2. You cannot install 4g+2g. That is, both the slots should be installed with same capacity memory. I was unable to find a 800mhz ddr3 memory so I used 1066mhz and it works.

I also added a Intel gigabit NIC card to serve as DMZ.

I am running VMware which hosts pfSense and 2 other light weight Linux servers for authentication. With 4 logical CPUs assigned, pfSense took the load perfectly. Even with 4 devices playing high def videos simultaneously. The CPU usage peaked at 40%.

I am very satisfied with the product. However, SuperMicro should include the 2.5" SSD mounts and a fan in this configuration as standard. These are cheap components and would save a lot of time and from inconvenience.

Pros: Great 1U Atom server! The power supply fan is super silent!

Cons: This server was listed for $299 a week ago and I was planing to buy 3 of them. Then NewEgg decides to jack up the price $100. Ended up buying the parts separately (from newegg) and putting it together myself for $300

Pros: Low power, stable, 1U form factor.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Works great as a low power server. Heat may be an issue, but I don't know for sure as I have it in a air conditioned room.

Pros: Good little system for basic services.

Cons: I bought the bundle with this chassis. a Samsung SSD and 4 GB of memory. I assumed this configuration had been verified however when I received it I got 1 4GB RAM chip. I installed it and just recieved a long beep. After reviewing the Supermicro documentation I found that this system support 4GB total memory with a max DIMM size of 2GB so the 4GB chip will not work. Beware of the bundle.

Pros: Small, low power, works beautifully out of the box (with memory). Been a great little server running PFSense. Far better with mods in the cons.

Cons: The builtin power supply fan is loud. Sure initially it isn't but as the power supply warms up, it get somewhat beastly loud. Not so much the volume but the whine of it. In a datacenter or closet it would be fine - perhaps even quiet - but not in a living space.

Opened the powersupply (voiding warranty) and replaced the fan with:
Noctua A-Series NF-A4x10 40mm[Newegg]. (and some duct tape to fill in the gaps from the narrower fan) Infinitely quieter and PS stays cool enough. Make sure if you do something like this - you don't then fill the machine with hard drives and a power hungry GPU or something silly. Limiting the airlflow is fine on a 200W supply if you are only drawing 35W total! :-)

Also needs airflow modifications to keep the CPU cool(it runs 60C stock, 70C with the quieter fan). Technically this is fine - but cooler is always better. I added a second Noctua fan to the back left side (opposite the supply) then blocked off ALL the vents with the *exception* of the vent right by the power supply in the front. By doing this air is pulled over the CPU and keeps it around 45C under modest load and still basically silent.

Server would have been nicer if some of this had been taken into account when it was "designed" ... but its easy enough to do.

Pros: Light, small, Linux compatible RAID, IPMI.

Cons: It's touchy with memory, so if you turn it on and it screeches at you, just try different memory and you should be OK. Getting the Adaptec RAID to work with Linux is slightly less intuitive than you might think simply because it actually shows the RAID and it shows each individual drive. Lastly, the case NEEDS this part in order to mount hard drives: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811994023 I have no idea why they wouldn't simply include this part but as long as you know that it is required, you won't be as frustrated.

Depending upon your deployment, it may also need a fan to blow on the drives and/or CPU. You will likely end up gluing fans in place if you have to mount them.
