4 out of 5 eggsGood buy, with some issues

Pros: Inexpensive, compatible, dual NIC, low power, good design

Cons: Box started falsely reporting overheating after power loss. The only way to get it to post is to remove the CMOS battery and reset all system settings. Supermicro has some quality control issues and their customer service is almost nonexistent. It is very difficult or impossible to obtain an RMA.

Other Thoughts: Using this for pfsense firewall for several locations. Really good and reliable except for the issues mentioned above. I need to RMA this, but advanced replacement?...I doubt it...

5 out of 5 eggsGood box

Pros: Affordable little box that does pretty much everything you ask of it, within reason. Includes riser card, but I've just threaded an IDE cable through the PCI slot on the back to hook up to an external DVD drive, since I use this box as a machine to try different Linux distros and Windows builds on. I also do microcontroller programming on it. I'm a college student, and it's nice that this product is small enough to fit flat inside your standard copy paper box. You can quickly remove the handles and re-attach them for this sort of storage. It really does make taking the computer back home more bearable. Unlike many server companies, SuperMicro makes a very diverse range of server products ranging from this humble little guy to HPC GPU-based machines. There are few machines that fit my bill, and this was one of them.

Cons: There are times that I wish the Intel graphics in this thing was a liiiiiiiiiittle faster, but that's not exactly SuperMicro's fault. Also, you get two USB ports, which can be a bit of a tight fit. However, I don't think the product was designed with the idea of using a bunch of USB peripherals in mind, so it might not be a huge drawback for you.

Other Thoughts: My particular box was assembled in the US from international and domestic components. This server serves (pun not intended) as proof that you can deliver a quality, unique product at a decent price while making it in a country with good labor laws. After the conditions at some tech plants in China came to light, I'm becoming more conscious of just who makes my machines and gadgets, and how they treat their people. It would appear as if SuperMicro operates in countries with good track records for labor rights. I will be looking to SuperMicro for future products when the time comes for me to buy some.

4 out of 5 eggsLaptop Memory!

Pros: * Very low power
* Easy to setup components
* Decent CPU speed with Windows 2008 R2 SP1

Cons: * Power Supply Fan a little louder than expected
- Added a piece of cardboard to front vent to help with this
* no HDD bracket included, and this is not noted as a requirement on description.

Other Thoughts: This takes DDR2 667mhz _Laptop_ memory. I had bought a lot of spare memory for other projects, so I was not at an instant loss to get started, but now I have two full size DDR2 667mhz sticks I have no use for currently.

4 out of 5 eggsgood home network router/firewall

Pros: I'm using this box as a router/firewall and it seems to be handling it self nicely. Faster then I expected for a cheap box like this.

Cons: fan noise could be better, but not extremely abnormal for equipment like this.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent System

Pros: Simple, efficient, easy to work with. As another reviewer mentioned this particular 1U comes WITH a riser card for PCI-E. That was a huge plus over their other atom 1U systems. Works with VMWare ESXi 4.1 perfectly other than a warning about a case fan... which it lacks.

Cons: None for me other than all the screws to open it. Some people complain they are a little loud due to the power supply fan, but they are being picky.

Other Thoughts: Simple, worked right out of the box. Bought as a package with a 2GB stick of RAM, and 1TB HDD. I already have a couple atom 1U systems running as Untangle firewalls and had purchased this to be yet another. Now I am going to try it out as a light weight VMWare ESXi host and see if I can run both a firewall and a light web or file server.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive

Pros: Impressive little box. Testing with server 2008 installed flawlessly. Will be commissioned as open source load balancing firewall in the near future as it was originally purchased for this. INCLUDES RISER CARD ! big plus in my opinion. internal onboard USB is nice feature although limited based on vertical space but can be solved with an L usb adapter.

Cons: Runs warm. A case fan would be nice but have not had any issues with overheating.
Memory slot was a little tight took a little fiddling to get it seated properly
ESATA would be nice as well none of these really warrant

Other Thoughts: might pick one up for the home for low cost vpn / web server
