2 out of 5 eggsBad network

Pros: Good price, good build.

Cons: One of the two mobo network ports is completely unusable in Linux. There's a known issue with that 82579LM chip and driver that causes the network card to go to sleep for 5 to 10 seconds every few minutes even if you disable power management. Not fun with VOIP traffic. DONT RUN LINUX on this box unless you want a big headache.

Other Thoughts: I wish I'd known before I ordered 3 of these, now I am having my remote office ship the server back so we can install an additional network card and disable the on-board em0.

5 out of 5 eggsabout the memory...

Pros: people seem to like it...

Cons: but they complain about memory...

Other Thoughts: I just got one of these servers white labeled by another company. I'm posting just to share the memory module it shipped with, in case that helps somebody.

The motherboard is X9SCL-F. The memory modules installed in it are 2GB Samsung M391B5773DH0-CK0.

Hope this helps!

4 out of 5 eggsTerrific Bare-Bones Server

Pros: Excellent set of features for the money. Real server, not a desktop system repackaged in a 1U chassis. This mobo includes IPMI. Space for two 3 1/2" hard drives. Accessories include mounting brackets for a slim note-book style DVD drive.

Cons: Doesn't come with rails and this server is too heavy and deep to safely mount only by its ears. Plan on getting the rails: MCP-290-00004-03 with it. Maybe -1 star is too harsh for this fault.

5 out of 5 eggsCorrect Memory

Pros: These devices are perfect for what they do. I use them as web filters (running smoothwall). You need to get the correct supported memory. That memory is ECC enabled, un-buffered.

Cons: None

2 out of 5 eggsVery picky

Pros: Small form factor
Quiet
Works great if you can find the right memory.

Cons: Documented memory selection small and useless.

Other Thoughts: As another reviewer said, these things are VERY picky with memory, and the supported memory list contains two entries, neither of which you can find. I've purchased several of these units over the years (obviously not exactly the same, but the same series/level), and it seems like the memory type required changes slightly every time. I don't know why they have to make a product this picky without giving a decent size supported memory listing. FWIW, I also recently purchased an X9-SAX board for a lab server, and encountered the same issue. I'm very seriously considering never ordering another supermicro product.

2 out of 5 eggsPicky with memory

Pros: Love SuperMicro products. Usually have no problems with them

Cons: For what ever reason this board is very picky with memory. I've purchased Kingston Value and Wintec value DDR3 1333 ram. Niether of them work. I can't seem to find supported ram for this board on their website so it looks like I'll have to keep purchasing and returning until I find one it likes.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Love this small server. Makes a great firewall box or small mirror raid server. (holds two drives). Tiny overall size, great airflow, no issues.

Cons: nadda

5 out of 5 eggsGreat 1u Rack, we liked them enough to order a 2nd

Pros: holds two 3.5" hard drives, it's cozy but we got them in. great management from the SuperMicro IPMI built in interface, able to control power, remote console control and gain access to all server sensor readings. internal fans and heatsink keep the cpu at a good temp and they run nice and quite.

Cons: manual didn't have instructions on installation of 2nd drive.
