1 out of 5 eggsFinal update: Bad Riser / PCIe port #6

Pros: it works fine except...

Cons: ... the Port #6, that is used by the Riser, is bad in 2 servers. The BIOS update to 2.0b, as suggested by their support, did not help at all.

They obviously forgot to wire it right. I ended up removing top cover, inserting various PCIe cards in ports #7, #6, #4 directly, and they worked in 7 and 4, but not on the 6. I just could not make the Port 6 work -- with or without the riser. Bad manufacturing and Q/A. Don't buy if you want to use a riser.

For me, it renders it unusable. I ended up disassembling the riser and gluing it along with the card with epoxy into port 4, the one that actually worked. I had to cut off the back panel stub also to make it fit into the back. I am very disappointed with such an obvious failure to do a basic port check by SUPERMICRO.

3 out of 5 eggsIssues with the riser slot

Pros: Helpful support

Cons: Shipped with outdated BIOS without the riser support (apparently this slipped through their QA)

Other Thoughts: Update to my previous review. I have contacted Supermicro support regarding the issue with the riser (cards not detected or not working properly). They got back advising to update the BIOS to 2.0b.

I have not updated the BIOS yet as the machines are in production. So don't know if this works. However you might want to flash BIOS asap once you get the system.

1 out of 5 eggsIssues

Pros: I bought 2 servers for low power consumption in the Datacenter (<1 amp). Unfortunately, both servers have issues.

Cons: 1. Intel 82574L driver has issues with MSI-X interrupts, dropping connections (google it to find problem description and resolution). Had to recompile and install the Intel driver under Linux. Still, it's not a reliable NIC interface as it still crashes when running for a long time.
2. The PCIe x3 expansion slot is not working properly in both servers I have. The first server would not initialize a Myricom 10 GB card in this slot from time to time on boot. The second server's expansion slot would not recognize any cards x1 or x2 at all. I tried every possible BIOS combinations and half a dozen different cards -- no resolution.

Both issues are major drawbacks as they really prohibit using it in production environment where reliability is required. I wasted days trying to find a fix for these problems and unfortunately not happy with the result.

Other Thoughts: IPMI and 32 GB RAM are working OK.

5 out of 5 eggsOld BIOS version

Pros: Unable to test

Cons: Unable to test

Other Thoughts: Comes with an old version BIOS, so no go for Ivy Bridge right out the box. Now have to buy i3 ($170) just for flashing to newer version of BIOS (v2). I wish SuperMicro included BIOS version somewhere on the box so NewEgg could put it in description section.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: First Supermicro purchase and I'm extremely pleased with what I see. Solid 1U case, very good ventilation with the 4 fans and runs very quietly at the lowest setting (optimal) which leaves them running at around 4900RPM.

The 4 SATA slots fit very nicely and everything is well laid out. I even popped in a Pentium G620 as this server will just be doing firewall duty running Server 2008 R2 and Threat management gateway 2010, which it handles just fine. Added in additional Intel CT network adapter for perimeter network in the 1 PCI-e slot and there is plenty of room.

Very impressed with the build quality and the motherboard. The integrated IPMI management works like a dream and is quick with no lag, very nice value add.

Cons: Only thing it didn't come with the the rack mount square nuts with clips, had to get some of those, hardly counts.

Other Thoughts: Liked that it even came with all the rails for rack mounting, from Dell and HP that is now a pricey option.

Looking forward to my next supermicro purchase and using this same box for a much beefier build with a Xeon E3.
