5 out of 5 eggsGreat work horse at Awesome value.

Pros: I ordered two of these for a small VM cluster and I really like this chassis and MB.

The IPMI is really awesome because you can boot into the BIOS and do OS installation completely remotely using the iKVM client with virtual CD-ROM plugin.

The chassis comes with some very nice Rapdi-rails that snap into standard 4-post racks with square holes, they have a nice sturdy feel.

Inside the chassis, the fans behind the HDD slots have a quick disconnect case that makes them easy to remove and clean. There is a clear plastic air flow guide over the two CPU sockets and the RAM to aid cooling, it can be seen in the Newegg product images.

Many PCI-E slots.

Cons: The server has screws on the front to hold it still in the rails, which is fine, but it would make the rails really awesome if it had a simple latch or quick release clip instead.

Other Thoughts: At 2U, the server strikes a good balance. It isn't cramped like a 1U would be and doesn't have a bunch of empty space like a 3 or 4U chassis.
Don't forget to get low-profile add-on cards.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: I've had two running with two Xeon E5-2660 and 64GB of RAM. Works great with Linux.

Cons: As noted in another comment, only 6 of the 8 SATA drive bays are connected. I use a PCIe card to drive the other two, but the PCIe limits the top speed.

No PS/2 connectors! So double check it will work with your KVM.

IPMI comes with default password of ADMIN/ADMIN. I was on the net for a month before realizing the server was wide open to abuse. IPMI requires an ATEN java plugin which does not work with icedtea, only the Oracle JRE. My experience with ATEN has been marginal, and many others report numerous secuity problems with the IPMI. So I consider the IPMI a toy for now.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid chassis but know before you buy!

Pros: Well-designed chassis with solid construction and lots of airflow. Motherboard is what it says on the tin and it performs well. Overall an excellent and versatile chassis for a lot of uses.

Cons: Be cognizant of the fact that although it has 8 hot-swap bays, there are only 6 available SATA ports on the motherboard! If you plan to put 8 hard drives in the chassis, you will need a low-profile PCI-E SATA card or a PCI-E RAID card if that's what you're doing.

Other Thoughts: An odd (and relatively common from the looks of it) SPGIO issue where the upper-right two bays flash their LEDs in the "RAID rebuilding" pattern. SPGIO controls via ledmon or spgio on linux work as intended on the other backplane LEDs but cannot countermand the blinking on those two bays. Some have said that it's because the backplane only recognizes 6 disks, although this could be just an issue of finding a jumper on the backplane and moving it. In most similar FAQs on their site, Supermicro seems to recommend simply disconnecting one or both of the SPGIO serial connectors from the backplane.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat value, room for everything we needed

Pros: Works great, we have two E5-2630 cpu's, 64 gig ram, 8 sas hot swap drives and 2 internal drives. This will be a great low cost VM host for our company to get us into virtualization, we have 8 drives on one adaptec 6805 raid for a data store and the 2 internal drives on another raid controller for vmware OS. Case is cozy but everything has space, it's a 2u rack so that's to be expected, cooling doesn't seem to be an issue and setting up alerts through supermicro's IPMI management interface is nice in case we had problems.

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: We didn't have the budget for the $2000 super-micro case on newegg so this one is a great fit. having the 2 internal slots for hard drives was nice so that we could have a separate raid to run vmware off of.

vmware doesn't install to onboard raid volume as mirrored, this isn't supermicro's fault it's vmware's since the onboard raid is a software raid.
