5 out of 5 eggsFollow-up

Pros: Zero issues. Works as advertised and then some (see previous review (perfect infrastructure server). Has been working flawlessly for several months in my virtual lab. Quiet, powerful. Did an upgrade to Hyper-V 2012 R2, which was problematic, but it all worked out in the end. And the ability to replicate is a lifesaver. Doesn't get better than this. Have relegated SAN to backups and doc storage only.

Cons: Have had a bit of trouble finding a cheap appropriate NIC for the free PCI slot.

Other Thoughts: Given that Newegg had a sale on large SSDs, changed sever storage from single SSD and SAN to all SSD (1 64GB+ and 1 TB each node). Boot-ups (for virtual clients and the server itself after POST) are usually under 10 seconds, and with 4 servers on each, and replication between the nodes, am using less than 10% of CPU resources.

5 out of 5 eggsThe perfect infrastructure server

Pros: Perfect for the growing small to medium business, or an established infrastructure. Pairs very nicely with a Promise SAN for a virtualized environment.

IPMI lets you manage the server over the network, so you can stay out of the server room. The UIO cable permits you to hook up a UPS via serial or USB port. Heat sinks come with it so again, a good deal. Setup was simple, about 10 minutes per node if you are being careful and the rack install (with the snap in mountings), was literally a snap. Power consumption is low and heat negligible. Noise is not noticeable.(if you are using SSDs). Comes with two NIC ports per node so you could use one for server traffic and the other for a SAN connection, or acquire a decent server NIC for 1-4 additional ports. The UIO cable (included) permits you to hook up one node to monitor the UPS if you want. All hardware needed was included, including lots of screws that I really didn't need.

Cons: CD wasni't included, but I was able to download the drivers from the supermicro website. So no takeaways. As always, the manual could be written better, but was surprisingly good (except it didn't discuss IPMI management or the IPMI login and password, but found these easily enough on the web.

Other Thoughts: To respond to the previous negative review regarding the UPS hook-up, you can connect the USB or serial connector from your UPS to a node via the included UIO cable.

I don't need all 8 nodes right now, so am only populating 2 to start, still have the full set in the chassis, but am keeping them pulled out about 1 1/2 inches so that server cooling is not effected. Installed an Intel Xeon E3-1230-V2 CPU and 4 Kingston KVR1333D3E9S/8G 8Gig UDIMMS. No issues except that the ECC is non-functional for some reason (apparently it is off automatically for uDIMMS). Will be adding single SSDs per node to implement Hyper-v2012 R2 on this pair for evaluating the failover capabilities of that environment.

Would seriously recommend this platform or its successor (for the E3 1200-V3 series CPUs) for any use where you don't need more than 32Gig per node. Very well designed from the mounting brackets on up.

5 out of 5 eggsAMazing server with what I needed and nothing I didn't

Pros: This server is easier and is much cheaper than putting together 8 separate systems with identical specs to each node. Plus having each system dual-connected to power while only using 2 plugs for all eight nodes makes this ideal for those with few plugs. This system is also very light on the power requirements, a node with full RAM and the CPU running full out at 100% only puts the power consumption at about 110 Watts per node and that is with 2x 7200 RPM HDDs in constant use. All this in a small machine.

I am running about 10 VMs on each node (Mostly Exchange, SharePoint and System Center VMs with SQL server back-ends) and they just fly like they are running on independent servers.

The integrated RAID is very solid despite an odd cosmetic bug (See other thoughts)

The integrated low-profile slot makes it highly upgradable despite its tiny size and you can still keep the dual gigabit adapter in it as well.

I barely had to use the KVMS dongle that came with it; only needed it to configure the IPMI interface, which only took about 5 minutes per machine, the rest was done from the IPMI, everything from BIOS configuration to OS installations to system administration tasks.

Cons: Other than the cosmetic RAID bug, nothing.

Other Thoughts: The RAID system will mark the last-loaded drive as bad but will show as fully healthy in the BIOS-based configuration utility and removing the disk marked as good does not break the RAID, I am running the core edition of Server 2012 Datacenter and can't install the Intel RST utility in the OS.

Since this is merely cosmetic I am still giving this system 5 stars.

Contrary to what another reviewer has stated, this system comes with all the normal power control features you would expect from a standard server, and just like any other server out there, requires at least a mid-range UPS if you want auto-power off during a power outage (Just like you'd expect from any other machine)

1 out of 5 eggsPower shut down

Pros: We have had this server up and running for over a month and really like it.

Cons: Biggest issue we just discovered is we cannot automatically shut down the server on power failure. With a $$$$$$ battery it can receive a signal to shut down but with our $$ battery backup it wont shut down. So, we are looking at getting rid of it and/or solutions to protect our system.
