4 out of 5 eggsGreat Server, Be Careful of Drive Connectors

Pros: As has been my experience, SuperMicro is fairly high quality considering the price. While not equivalent to a Dell, I built a box for $3k using this case that would have cost over $10k from Dell. Case is well designed with great air flow, although fans are loud. Redundant power supplies, and dual gigabit nics are great. Happy to see that the riser card was included. Cable routing was well thought out and does not interfere with air cooling. Comes with CPU heatsinks that fit nicely in the case. Lots of RAM slots on the motherboard, and it doesn't feel crowded. RAILS were not of poor quality like the old supermicros were. Great for SSD drives.

Cons: First, and foremost, it was not clear that the case comes with only SFF8087 connectors for the drive backplane. There is no way to circumvent this, so you must purchase a reverse breakout cable to use with the motherboard, or purchase RAID cards that support SFF8087. NOTE: Not all cards use the same SFF8087 connector. I mistakenly purchased a card with a SFF8643 connector which needs yet its own adapter cable. It would be nice if SuperMicro at least included one such cable (SFF-8087 to SATA Reverse) for use with the motherboard SATA.

The manual could use a lot of improvement, and doesn't exactly match the case or the motherboard.

Does not include a CDROM/DVDROM.

I wish it included a USB port and monitor port on the front of the case.

Other Thoughts: The cable needed to connect to the motherboard is at newegg: NORCO C-SFF8087-4S Discrete to SFF-8087 (Reverse breakout) Cable

4 out of 5 eggsGreat server

Pros: Great 2U package for DP setups, with 2.5" disks. Install was flawless and build quality is unmatched.

A full configured system, with fast procs and ssd raid arrays is crazy fast. I'm currently running 5 vms and a dbase/joomla setup at the iron level. The system laughs at every load I've thrown at it. Even boot storms pass in the blink of an eye. A standard 2012 vm reboots in about 5 seconds. A normal Joomla page loads in less than 0.35 secs. Admin actions with heavy writes, ~1 sec.

Cons: The pci slot area suffers from insufficient air flow. After installing two raid cards, temps on the cards were approaching 80c under load. With a pci slot cooler and a couple of suspended 40mm fans, temps are normal. But I'm not thrilled with my hack job or losing a pci slot. I wish SM would engineer a spot for a couple 40mm fans in the pci area.

IPMI is nice but slow to report on any non-local system.

Need a better bios update function. System was picky about usb bootable disks.

I can live with the last two issues but inadequate cooling is a serious design issue.

Other Thoughts: Please review the manual before spec'ing and populating ram. A misconfiguration here can slow you way down. Also review cpu world for your particular processor when trying to figure out the correct turbo speeds. The advertised turbo speed assumes you've enabled only one core. For example, a E5-2690 is advertised for 3.9 turbo, but that assumes only one active core. But with all cores installed, that value is only 3.3.

This system is designed for installation of discrete raid cards. You can certainly run storage through the board but you will have to rewire from the backplanes with standard sata cables.
