Great card
- Pros: Very fast card with SATA-II drives (good with SATA-I too), great driver support for any OS, including Vista x64.
- Cons: A bit pricier than some other cards, but at least it will have updated drivers for newer OSes.
- Other Thoughts: Nice inclusion of a PATA port, though not sure what I'll do with it - I prefer to use PATA/SATA converters for ease of SATA cables.
Works OK, but YMMV under Linux
- Pros: When it works its fast. No trouble installing or being recognised by several Linux (Fedora) distros
- Cons: Has driver issues under Linux. I installed this in a home-brew server using a Via C3 based motherboard running first Fedora Core 5, then FC 6 and now Fedora 7. Worked fine when lightly loaded but put some strain on the CPU, say rsynch backing up my PC or rapid Samba access from the Audiotron MP3 player, and the controller starts throwing kernel Emask errors for the active SATA drive resulting in low performance and eventually the drive gets disconnected. Reading the Linux-IDE mailing list it appears that while rare this isn't an isolated occurrence and affects multiple distros. With a faster CPU / different Motherboard / more up to date Linux kernel this may not be an issue. Of course YMMV
- Other Thoughts: For low intensity home use a cheaper SATA I (1.5Gb/s) card might be a better bet. It was for me !
Sata II for older system
- Pros: It let me use sata on my old system...What a difference over IDE!!! Has raid ability (software). Cost effective upgrade. Made a huge performance increase over ide. Also had an extra ide header for legacy support.
- Cons: had to use the tx2 driver whenever I loaded windows setup, or norton ghost...would not let me write zero's to drive even after loading driver. (Probably not necessary unless you get virus or something)
- Other Thoughts: this product is great for breathing new life into older systems, but remember to have a floppy with the driver handy wnen you try to do anything with this thing from command line(Ghost ect). This is why 4 eggs instead of five...newegg gets 5 for shipping, and customer service
