5 out of 5 eggsPowerful RAID Controller

Pros: I bought this controller so that I would have the option of upgrading my server capacity in the future. I have been using it to run six hard drives; two mirrored drives and four drives on RAID-5. I have had no issues since I bought it. And of course, this beast can handle up to 16 hard drives!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I built a server and was having serious issues with the onbord RAID controller. One of the drives connections kept failing and the RAID array would not syncronize correctly. I was a little reluctant to purchase this controller because of the price, but I have had no regrets since.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hardware Raid Controller

Pros: Running 16 Western Digital 500GB drives in RAID 6 configuration. The case is the Chenbro 4U 16 hot-swappable bay rackmount server case.

I started with some serious trouble but found out that Windows XP was not supporting 7TB very well. I had recently purchased Vista for my desktop but uninstalled from major hardware incompatibilities. So, I loaded up Vista on this server and made sure to convert the disk to GPT (different partition setup). From then on, I have had no trouble.

I get plenty of speed for my needs but have not ran a true speed test yet. I plan on using this to store a lot of miniDV video along with my digital media collection and documents. It is used to store our documents and the server end hosts a web site, email server, ftp server, media server, and some other applications.

Cons: The trouble I had earlier was that I would load data (under XP) and then upon rebooting, the data would not show up or the drive would not even be accessible. I am very confident that this was due to XP. The card said everything was okay--and from its perspective, it was. XP supposedly doesn't handle > 2TB partitions very well at all.

Other Thoughts: I'm just happy I can put my purchased copy of Vista to use. It was going to sit, collecting dust since I wasn't going to use it on the computer I originally purchased it for--Home Premium.

When I decided to call Promise tech support, I cannot emphasize how incredible it was. I called four times total and each and every time, I was talking to a real person in less than 20 seconds from the last menu key. They were very helpful and willing to talk as long as I needed, too. Thees calls were made on weekdays and were usually after their normal hours.
