1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy no parts to repair

Pros: - Nice Design
- Small footprint

Cons: - Manual shows you how to replace parts, call tech support. They won't sell you parts.
- Want you to buy a whole new unit.
- Even under warranty they just send you a whole new unit.

Other Thoughts: I have had my DS4600 for a couple of years now and the warranty ran out in March of 2013. I purchased it in March of 2011. Its now September of 2013 only a few months over and I think the Power Supply is bad. Called tech support and they won't help, don't sell parts only replace the whole thing. Buy another one the tech said. So in order to get my info back I have to buy another DS4600 for a few hundred dollars when its on a 20 dollar part that is the issue and a proprietary part at that. Only reason I bought this was by seeing the replacement parts in the manual, I thought I would be able to get the parts when it failed. The parts are so easy to replace, the product is made for the end user to replace parts on it and I just don't get it. Stay away and get another product and don't buy anything Promise Technology makes!

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems. love it

Pros: Keeps structure well. No failed drives. Easily installed software on my mac and got everything going.

Cons: Can't say anything bad about this RAID enclosure.

Other Thoughts: I've been running this for over a year now. I have other drives for movies, music, etc. I've been using this strictly for professional use to store photography/video. I have 4x 2tb samsung drives in the enclosure and 6tb of working space. It sets behind my computer and I forget its there its so quite. Only reason Im back to review is because im looking to buy a second one.

3 out of 5 eggsFollow up to my 3/2010 Review

Pros: Good for small backup file size: under ~350GB backups complete in under 12 hours using Backup Exec.

Cons: One drive light out, but utility says all drives are OK. Slow backups: I get 1200MB/sec to a different USB drive (Seagate) and only 350-400MB/sec to this one. The Promise used to deliver 1400MB/sec, so it seems to be failing. Deleting all data - which was very badly fragmented - did not help the speed. Using four 1.5TB Enterprise drives - 3 in RAID5 and 1 hot spare.

Other Thoughts: I have another one of these DS4600s backing up for a different customer. We back up about 80GB each night and it works fine. Between both customers, all 8 drives are Enterprise class. In 15 months, have replaced 4 drives, which seems high for drives rated for this kind of service.

1 out of 5 eggsSevere software/firmware quality issues

Pros: + Relatively inexpensive.
+ Their tech support does get back to you in an acceptable time period, even on weekends.

Cons: - The array has "forgotten" about my raid 5 volume twice now. I'm trying Raid 10 now (losing 2 TB of capacity in the process) and hope that it doesn't just boot up one day and say "you have no volume, please create a volume now," when 3 TB of data was already moved to it. This is a dismal product and I wish I could get my money back on it.
- It's abundantly clear that English is the second language of the software team which wrote the firmware for this thing. When I run a backup it says "Backup is start," and that's one of the better English phrases.

Other Thoughts: Ultimately I cannot recommend this DAS unit. The software quality issues are extremely concerning. This thing is trash, I'm only using it as a backup until I can buy a better quality unit from a company which has programmers who can speak and write the English language.

2 out of 5 eggsLost data multiple times, with multiple drives

Pros: Beeps when the RAID fails...which it has done 3 times with 3 different replacemnt drives. Promise support will help out but only to a point. Wish I could give this a better review

Cons: Management software only works when plugged via USB. Installed 4 2TB WD Drives in it, RAID failed after a week, claiming Drive 1 was bad. Replaced with an identical drive, would not let me rebuild the array...the new drive showed failed a week later. Could not rebuild the array. Replaced all drives with WD Raid approved drives, these drives are listed on WD's HCL (and much more expensive)... Contacted Promise and replaced the entire unit, updated firmware and software. Drive 1 shows up bad again....3 failed RAIDs, 3 Different drives, 2 different DS4600's.

Other Thoughts: If you are going to try this, use drives listed on their HCL. Use the SATA card they suggest (or just stick with USB). Make sure you have a backup of the data! I'm ditching it for a good RAID card (Areca) and using dumb enclosures.

3 out of 5 eggsmixed emotions

Pros: Easy to set up, simple software interface, RAID 5 capable, quiet, cool, flexible IO options.

Cons: Build quality is fair - there is a lot of plastic. The PSU wiggles around when you plug the power cable in. I'm only getting 50Mb/s read in a RAID 5 over FW800. That is okay for what I'm using it for, but not what it should be capable of. The drives spin up individually from sleep, so it takes about 45 seconds for the 4 disks to wake. That is a long time when you are waiting to view something.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to hook to a Mac Mini to serve video and audio in my house. It works well for that. The build quality is not a factor since I just set it and forget it, but it really feels cheap and anyone carrying this thing around would not do so for long. The quiet fans for well in the media-server setup. The 45 second spin-up time is a pain. I don't want to set these drives to never sleep (trying to be green) and I shouldn't have to. Maybe a firmware update could fix this.

2 out of 5 eggsPromise DS4600 on Linux

Pros: Very good price ... and very good performance
I have been using the DS4600 eSATA attached to an HP Proliant DL585 server for about 6 months now without any problems.

Cons: Promise does not support the SmartNavi monitoring software on Linux, so I am kind of flying blind.
If there is a problem with a disk in the array, hopefully the disk LED will let me know. Without SmartNavi I have no way to monitor the array.

Other Thoughts: I have a Promise FastTrak RAID-5 PCI card that uses a PomiseWebPam monitoring software. This is much better RAID monitoring. Sure wish Promise wanted to support the DS4600 SmartNavi software on Linux.

2 out of 5 eggsIs it really hardwaare RAID???

Pros: price

Cons: Is it really hardware RAID????

Other Thoughts: The unit is advertised as having "hardware RAID", but at this price point, it's hard to imagine that it's anything other than embedded Linux Software RAID. The lowest price true hardware RAID controller from Promise costs more that this device. If it's really hardware RAID, can anyone comment on what the hardware RAID chipset is in use?
I did notice a GPL statement in the manual, but no other information.

5 out of 5 eggsPromose DS4600

Pros: Using 4 WD 2TB Enterprise drives: 3 drives in RAID5 for about 3.9TB, 1 spare, connected to 32-bit Window 2003 SBS. Array formatted very quickly. Software interface is effective. I would buy another one of these.

Cons: No instructions for setting up the hot spare and tech support, while very accessible BEFORE I bought, was inaccessible for post sale support and did not reply to email or voice mail when unit was 1 DAY old. (Solution: set up array, and then plug in the spare.)

Other Thoughts: On line for 6 months. We will see if it makes it to a year.

4 out of 5 eggsinexpensive RAID

Pros: Price is solid. Multiple I/O options. simple set up, handles the formatting of the volume. Power supply is a standard black box, but is integrated into the bottom-nice because if it goes it will be easy to swap out.

Cons: No multiple RAID volumes (i.e. not possible to have two separate mirrors).

Other Thoughts: Basic tests of 30GB large file copies:

FW800 speeds: 50-70MB/s
SATA: 65-80MB/s

AJA IO: 95-110MB/s

Don't have a second unit to see if the drives can be migrated to another unit and retain the RAID.
