Promise Pegasus RAID Storage with Thunderbolt

Pegasus R4 and R6 are the first four-bay and six-bay high performance hardware RAID solutions designed to unleash the raw power of Thunderbolt™ technology. Thunderbolt technology is a new, high-speed, dual-protocol I/O technology designed for performance, simplicity, and flexibility. This high-speed I/O technology is capable of delivering a blistering two channels of 10Gbps (1.25Gbps) per port of performance.

Lightning Fast Performance

With I/O rates of over 800Mbps, Pegasus delivers a massive and unprecedented leap in performance, allowing amateur professionals, audio engineers, photographers, and post production engineers, to unleash the raw power of Pegasus, enabled with Thunderbolt Technology. Final Cut professionals can ingest, edit, and playback, multiple streams of uncompressed HD (8-bit and 10-bit) video, while protecting valuable workflows, audio sessions, and other creative media content, with Promise's award winning, enterprise level, RAID 6 engine (features mature error handling schemes for the ultimate in data protection). Graphic artists utilizing Photoshop and Maya 3D animation can both manipulate and archive high resolution graphics on Pegasus, with relative ease and lightning fast responsiveness.

Flexible Connectivity

The multi-protocol support of Thunderbolt Technology enables Pegasus to deliver amazing flexibility. Daisy-chain more than one Pegasus enclosures to a single Thunderbolt technology port or connect a display to Pegasus for the ultimate in convenience and interface connectivity.

Fast, Safe and Reliable

Digital media consumption is growing at an astonishing rate, and is part of everyone's life. Featuring two high performance 10Gbps bi-directional channels and Promise's enterprise-level RAID 6 protection, Pegasus provides fast, safe, and reliable external storage, essential for protecting your music, photos, videos, and other valuable data. Pegasus provides massive storage, and fast performance for popular applications, including Final Cut Pro, Garageband, iTunes, iPhoto, and Photoshop. Pegasus can be used in conjunction with Apple's Time Machine utility (in OS X), to back up invaluable digital media, documents, or an entire computer (or workstation).

Easy to Use

Pegasus comes pre-configured out of the box. Simply unpack, supply power, and connect the Thunderbolt cable (currently, only available from Apple) to the Thunderbolt port on your computer, and you will be ready to either ingest/edit production video, or store all your important documents, music, photos, and videos. Management of Pegasus is made possible through an easy to use, all new, made-for-OS X GUI utility.

One More Thing - It's Eco-Friendly

Pegasus is RoHS compliant - in simple terms, Pegasus is eco-friendly, keeping harmful lead out of the environment and our delicate ecosystems. Consuming a mere 78 Watts under full load with six hard drives installed, Pegasus uses roughly 26% of the power consumed by the average 300-Watt power supply in standard computers. Sporting a new enclosure, an 80 PLUS power supply, and a smart cooling fan, system noise is never an issue making Pegasus ideal for your desktop, small office environment, and or any room in the home.

5 out of 5 eggsPROMISE Pegasus PR4 (Thunderbolt 10Gb/s)

Pros: Fast! Compatible with MAC and Windos 8. SILENT! Great quality build! It will not get hot. It's an excelent product, not advertised to his true value.
You can replace the included 1TB HDD with 4TB and it's even faster.

Cons: NONE. Maybe the price, but they sold for 50% off and that it's a steal deal

Other Thoughts: Just buy them!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: This thing is fast.
it is small.
no noise or spin up vibration what so ever.
cool flashing blue LED's.
Easy to set up and use

Cons: 18 hours sync time.

Other Thoughts: Purchased to house my media library of HD video, music and pics. This thing is flawless and I love it. Superfast, i imported 1,000's of pics into iphoto in under a minute. I am considering buying another to run them in array. At the current price you can buy 2 and have 8 raid bays with 8TB, Compare that against Areca, (8 bays with no drives) Lacie (software raid only 5 bays) or caldigit (software raid and only 3 bays) and you will see why buying this is the right choice or even buying 2.
I am using this with a macbook pro 2013 with Retina 16GB Ram and I get over 650MB's write and 450MB/s read.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Pretty much a plug-and-play solution.
Excellent software and driver support on the mac.
Super speedy.

Cons: Expensive relative to other solutions.
Take a long time to sync drives initially, but drives can be used while this is happening.

Other Thoughts: This unit is mated with a Thunderbolt display, a keyboard, and an LG USB3 BluRay writer as a docking workstation for my MacBook Pro 15 Retina running OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). I have it partitioned into 2 Volumes, one for media and one for backup. The backup volume works great with Time Machine.

I use the rig for media processing (audio, photos, and video) and tablet software development (IntelliJ Idea for Android development and XCode for iPad development). While the RAID unit is really not involved (beyond backups) in the development work, I use it heavily for storing a large collection of media, including tens of thousands of photos in a Lightroom library, over 1/2 terabyte of lossless, HD, and multichannel music, and years of HD videos and associated blu-ray masters and working files. In this work, the speed of the drive in RAID 5 is fabulous.

Price in the Mac world is an issue - but Apple's exclusive on thunderbolt is over, and PC motherboards with it are starting to appear. Expect prices to start dropping slowly as adoption in the PC market ramps up.

I am not a bigot for either personal computer "religion". I have built, owned, and run numerous windows-based workstations and servers over the last 20 years and expect to do so again. How I ended up in the Mac world for this particular setup is a long story - but I am not at all disappointed. The Pegasus is a key part of what makes this setup work so well for what I do with it.
