This review is from: PROMISE Pegasus PR401US 4TB (4x1TB) 7200RPM SATA RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 with 2 x Thunderbolt 10Gb/s port 4-Bay RAID Enclosure

Pros: This thing is fast.
it is small.
no noise or spin up vibration what so ever.
cool flashing blue LED's.
Easy to set up and use

Cons: 18 hours sync time.

Other Thoughts: Purchased to house my media library of HD video, music and pics. This thing is flawless and I love it. Superfast, i imported 1,000's of pics into iphoto in under a minute. I am considering buying another to run them in array. At the current price you can buy 2 and have 8 raid bays with 8TB, Compare that against Areca, (8 bays with no drives) Lacie (software raid only 5 bays) or caldigit (software raid and only 3 bays) and you will see why buying this is the right choice or even buying 2.
I am using this with a macbook pro 2013 with Retina 16GB Ram and I get over 650MB's write and 450MB/s read.

This review is from: PROMISE Pegasus PR401US 4TB (4x1TB) 7200RPM SATA RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 with 2 x Thunderbolt 10Gb/s port 4-Bay RAID Enclosure

Pros: Pretty much a plug-and-play solution.
Excellent software and driver support on the mac.
Super speedy.

Cons: Expensive relative to other solutions.
Take a long time to sync drives initially, but drives can be used while this is happening.

Other Thoughts: This unit is mated with a Thunderbolt display, a keyboard, and an LG USB3 BluRay writer as a docking workstation for my MacBook Pro 15 Retina running OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). I have it partitioned into 2 Volumes, one for media and one for backup. The backup volume works great with Time Machine.

I use the rig for media processing (audio, photos, and video) and tablet software development (IntelliJ Idea for Android development and XCode for iPad development). While the RAID unit is really not involved (beyond backups) in the development work, I use it heavily for storing a large collection of media, including tens of thousands of photos in a Lightroom library, over 1/2 terabyte of lossless, HD, and multichannel music, and years of HD videos and associated blu-ray masters and working files. In this work, the speed of the drive in RAID 5 is fabulous.

Price in the Mac world is an issue - but Apple's exclusive on thunderbolt is over, and PC motherboards with it are starting to appear. Expect prices to start dropping slowly as adoption in the PC market ramps up.

I am not a bigot for either personal computer "religion". I have built, owned, and run numerous windows-based workstations and servers over the last 20 years and expect to do so again. How I ended up in the Mac world for this particular setup is a long story - but I am not at all disappointed. The Pegasus is a key part of what makes this setup work so well for what I do with it.
