Cost effective big data
This review is from: PROMISE VessRAID VR1830INAC2C RAID 0/1/1E/5/6/10/50/60 12 3.5" Drive Bays Quad Ports full-duplex 1Gb iSCSI 2U 12-Bay 16TB RAID Sub-System
Pros: I have used the VessRAID 1830i and vtrak m310i units from Promise and have been very pleased. They have competed well against MUCH more expensive options from other vendors. The VessRAID has lots of options that would make it compelling for lots of SoHo uses, but I use it exclusively for iscsi block storage.
Cons: some performance degradation when drives are in pre-fail, before the carrier decides to mark the drive entirely dead. Carriers use screws to hold drives. Simple, compatible, but tedious if you buy 8 carriers and 8 drives to fill out 2 arrays that came 8/12 full. Some parts of web interface are confusing. Initial setup may be easiest with serial cable and terminal, depending on your skill set.
Other Thoughts: These aren't getting cheaper. Perhaps the line is gaining a proper reputation for reliability, but the price has gone up on these units every year I've been watching. Buy now. Perhaps we can keep the price down if we buy enough volume?
