5 out of 5 eggsAdaptec & Newegg = Great Service

Pros: Setting up RAID with Adaptec Cards and purchasing from Newegg is all you need.

Cons: Jump for the higher end cards that start with a 6.

Other Thoughts: Once you know, You Newegg.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat card for the price!

Pros: Supported by ESXi 4.1 +, great feature set, very fast transfer speeds, PCIe 2.0, ROC is sweet, price

Cons: Passively cooled, runs VERY hot!

Other Thoughts: I have had this card in a home server running ESXi 4.1 U1 for nearly 6 months without a hickup. It is best to use drives that support TLER/ERC/CCTL (all the same concept). I am running 4 WD RE4 drives on it and they perform flawlessly. You MUST have sufficient airflow for this card for it is passively cooled and this is why I gave it 4/5 eggs. I attached a 50mm case fan to it with zip ties and it cooled it right down! Adaptec really needs to get a better heatsink (copper) on this thing. The fan I purchased was "EVERCOOL FAN-EC5020M12CA 50mm Case Fan"

4 out of 5 eggsBeware of EFI-based Sandy Bridge mobos.

Pros: Compact, Fast, Cheap (relatively), Powerful

Cons: WILL NOT WORK WITH CURRENT (April 2011) SANDYBRIDGE EFI-BASED MOBOS!

That said, it seems more like an EFI maturity issue more than an Adaptec one. Also, you can currently avoid pure-EFI if you purchase a Gigabyte mobo (as of now at least, since they didn't do much other than grafting the GPT support onto the BIOS it seems) and it will work fine. (We have it in a P67A-UD4-B3.) Oh, and as everyone else said, it runs hot. Put some fans right next to it.

Other Thoughts: I am not associated with Gigabyte in any way. I'm just trying to save other potential buyers of this card some big headaches.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card!

Pros: Great Card, easy to setup. Works with VMWare ESXi. I am using it in a server setup with 16TB ( (8) WD 2TB). I'm extremely happy with the performance of this card, very fast. I run 6 operating systems off the server ranging from Windows XP to Linux. Speed is as expected with the load the server has, no hesitations. I'm able to get 180-220MB (Megabytes) a sec with a 2Gbit (1Gbit x 2 teamed) connection with this card. As with previous reviewers, yes it's true. The controller does run hot, it's to be expected. Adaptec stated "Operating Temperature
0°C to 55°C* (with 200 LFM airflow; without battery)
0°C to 40°C* (with 200 LFM airflow; with battery)
Note: This Adaptec card contains a powerful RAID processor which requires adequate airflow to operate reliably. Please install this card only into server or PC chassis with recommended airflow (200 LFM)." Since I run this in a server with the proper air flow, it runs very cool.

Cons: Get's Hot. Adequate cooling is a must! This card has a tiny heatsink and no fan. Airflow must be provided as expected.
Please install this card only into server or PC chassis with recommended airflow (200 LFM)."

Other Thoughts: This controller run on Supermicro SC825TQ-R720UB, Dual AMD Opteron™ 6100 Series processors (Socket G34) 12-cores each, 64GB total DDR3 Registered ECC 1333 SDRAM in 16 DIMMs, (8) Hot-swap WD 2TB SATA Drives.
Not for your average user. Cheaper cards will provide enough performance for most people. Enthusiasts or Professionals who have multiple PC's accessing large files will need this card.

The benefit of this card is the 2.4ghz processor built into it. It is designed to take the load off of the PC's CPU. Again this would be good for a server that will be doing other things in addition to serving up files quickly. Expensive like the server but I would choose hardware RAID over software any day.

5 out of 5 eggsFast

Pros: I'll keep it short. Good, fast, nicely priced SATA RAID controller that works with VMWare ESXi.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I love this card. It does get very hot but I added PCI slot fan, now its cool to the touch.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat card!

Pros: Extremely easy setup. Had a 1+0 array up in a couple of minutes. The cost is also great if you're used to Adaptec's other offerings. LED status lights are memorizing; can you say "Night Rider"?

Cons: Card's CPU runs HOT HOT HOT. Get yourself a cheap 4 dollar 50mm fan and a couple of zipties and you're good to go.

Other Thoughts: A card like this is a must if you're looking to really take advantage of the performance increase that a raid array typically offers.

5 out of 5 eggsThis thing is rediculous!!!

Pros: All I can say is this thing is fast on a new level.

You can not possibly understand the amount of horsepower your PC loses with a cheap motherboard controller. I thought the Intel ICH10 was fast with its 220MB/s transfer rates and 285MB/s burst rates on my 3 WD1001FLAS drives.

This thing is steady at 350MB/s and 1000+MB/s burst.

Cons: Runs extremely warm. I went and purchased a small fan and zip tied it to the card. Made a HUGE difference and my card under load runs about 50c/122f.

I am going to engineer a better cooling solution. I might remove the factory junk heat sink and get an aftermarket chipset cooling solution with a copper base. The factory uses aluminum which is far less thermally efficient.

Other Thoughts: As I said you wont understand how bottle necked your PC is until you use one of these.

If you are using an ICH9 or 10R chip set it might not be worth it unless you are wanting to run more than 3 drives in raid 5 or 4 in raid 10. The above review was written using a AMD Phenom II BE 965 with 8GB DDR2 and 3 WD 1TB Black Edition drives running raid 0 (stripe) for testing. Im going to get a forth drive and set it to 1+0 aka raid 10 for speed and reliability.

5 out of 5 eggs1 year later

Pros: 1 year ownership on this card and it has proven to be the best money I've spent for my system. After three months I decided to beef up my system and go for more than just 4 SSD's, which required me buying a Chenbro expander, which worked wonderfully. Altogether this card is now running 12 SSD's in multiple arrays. On my 240GB OS array I am benchmarking right around 1.2 Gbps reads and 780 Mbps writes!!! Setup is straighforward and the card-based utility is easy and intuitive. Managment software is very good. I sugest the 800T battery backup for write-through. If you do video editing YOU NEED high I/O.

MSI 790FX-GD70
AMD 965BE
Adaptec 5405
OCZ Vertex SSD x8
OCZ Apex x4
XFX 4890x2
Windows 7 64bit

No compatability issues. Adaptec has the best driver support I've ever seen for any product on the market. Seriously, they must have done 6 or more Firmware/Driver updates over the last year. Not that you need to, but it shows the dilligence of the company.

Cons: No joke, this baby runs hot. I custom mounted a 50mm fan above the heatsink and added a case fan above the PCIe lanes...problem solved. If there is a gripe...this is it. Adaptec needs to acknowledge it and provide more than just the passive cooling heatsink.

Other Thoughts: I am building another system. This time I'll get the 51245, this way I wont need the Chenbro expander and I'll get that space back in the case. Adaptec now makes the 5405Z...NAND flash backup and no battery backup required. Also, there's no need to buy all those SSD's anymore. Adaptec now has a hybrid array system called MaxIQ. It's a couple standard HDD's and only ONE SSD...they say they've increased array speeds by 5X. Bravo Adaptec.
(when can we expect a 51245Z?)

2 out of 5 eggsToo Hot

Pros: It's small and doesn't take up much room. Comes with fan out cable. When in the right case, it's a great RAID card.

Cons: It gets VERY HOT and will sound a very loud buzzer to let you know. I am running one in a water cooled case with decent airflow and it still gets too hot. I would pass unless you have very good airflow and nothing else in your chassis that will get hot.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if Adaptec did something else to help cool this little monster.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Professional Raid Card

Pros: Quality Card. I have yet to notice any bottle-necking by the card.

I am using it in a Server/NAS with RAID 5+1 hot spare setup.
4x 500GB Western Digital eco drives with variable RPM.
Running great on a Celeron 440, thanks to the integrated 2.4ghz processor of this raid card.

Cons: As some other reviewers have run into issues. So did I.

This card will not work with most single PCI-E 16x motherboards. Like the (Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L) It will have crashing issues. You will need a motherboard that has multiple PCI-E 8x/16x/32x slots.

After a month of troubleshooting, I went and bought an Asus P5N-D and havent had a problem since.

Also its a big price tag on this card. If you actually want to reap the benefits of this card you need to have this installed in the PC/system you plan to access the data at or have it in a server attached to some ridiculously overpowered network with greater than gigabit speeds. And the receiving computers will need SSD's or fast HDD's that can handle the throughput of this card. Or you need alot of PC's accessing this card at the same time.

IT GETS HOT! Adequate cooling is a must! This card has a tiny heatsink and no fan. Airflow must be provided! I wish the heatsink was bigger! Doesn't dissapate heat well IMO.

Other Thoughts: Not for your average user. Cheaper cards will provide enough performance for most people. Enthusiasts or Professionals who have multiple PC's accessing large files will need this card, however your network infrastructure or receiving PC's will likely be your bottleneck.

The benefit of this card is the 2.4ghz processor built into it. It is designed to take the load off of the PC's CPU. Again this would be good for a server that will be doing other things in addition to serving up files quickly.
