5 out of 5 eggsAdaptec gets Great Service

Pros: I like simple and I just find Adaptec raid cards to fit the definition of simple. Over the years I have tried other cards but can now attest that service is great using PMC-Adaptec products.

Cons: Haven't found any, I wish all the cards came with the kit rather than looking for the products having a kit or not.

1 out of 5 eggsCan't trust this card

Pros: Fast performance.

Cons: I previously reviewed this card at the end of last year. This is a follow-up of the same card.

A sector became corrupt on one of the drives in a RAID 6 set. Any reliable hard drive controller, RAID or not, is supposed to identify bad sectors & adjust accordingly. Unfortunately, this card generated an informational log message but failed to mark the sector as bad & make the appropriate adjustments.

After identifying the problem after several days of unexplainable "quirks" with several applications, the failing hard drive & the Adaptec 6805 card were replaced & the entire system restored to prior to the corruption...causing a complete loss of data entered during that period.

After sending the card & logs into Adaptec technical support & escalating the issue, all they could say was "it shouldn't have done that". They confirmed that the card was fine & should have identified the bad sector & that the affected data should have been relocated & the sector marked as bad. They simply had no idea why the card did (or didn't do) what it did. The card was running the latest firmware & the latest driver was loaded.

Understandably, I will never use another Adaptec card. I simply can't trust them.

5 out of 5 eggs6805 with ASUS X-79 Deluxe

Pros: Very fast, easy to set up. Works with the ASUS X79-Deluxe motherboard, no problem!

Cons: Needs a fan to cool off, which occupies a pci-e slot. Unfortunately the cables that came with the kit do not click firmly into my WD RE4 drives (more like a mushy slide-on that can easily become disconnected), so I had to use the Highpoint brand cable to connect firmly the SAS port to my four drives (with a little click).

Other Thoughts: The fan I bought seemed the best option for quiet operation and works great - is quiet at low fan setting and was only $14: Vantec SP-FC70-BL
This was my first connection of any SAS cable to a RAID card, and it takes a little more force than you would expect to go "all the way in"
I put all of this into a Fractal Design R4 case for 8 full drives in a medium tower case - GREAT CASE at GREAT PRICE!

2 out of 5 eggsGreat card, but has flaws

Pros: The RAID performance is solid.

Cons: 1) I bought this card for a server build that was to replace a Dell PowerEdge. After months of technical support involvement with Symantec (Backup Exec), Microsoft (Windows Server 2008 R2 x64), & Adaptec (this card/driver), a successful recovery to dissimilar hardware was not possible when this particular card was involved. The driver works perfectly once installed, but during the recovery process the driver fails to initially install successfully. You must inject the driver manually, & then you have to do so TWICE because the initial attempt always fails. This issue was escalated to the highest levels of Adaptec & Symantec technical support, & no successful solution could be identified. Although Adaptec did claim ownership of the problem, they were unable to provide a driver that worked or any solution to this issue. Identical server migrations using a comparable Intel RAID controller worked perfectly. I'm not sure if this issue is isolated to this particular model or if it is an Adaptec issue with all of their RAID controllers/drivers, as this is the only Adaptec model that I've attempted to use in this particular scenerio.

2) As previously mentioned by others, this thing runs HOT. Make sure that you have adequate cooling.

3) As also mentioned by others, don't expect to install SAS drives to this card with the included cables. You'll need a SAS sub-chassis that accepts SATA connectors or a similar solution.

Other Thoughts: While I generally prefer Adaptec products over Intel, in this case Adaptec's offering simply won't work. I still use this Adaptec RAID controller for new server builds, but it isn't a reasonable solution for a server that must be loaded via a recovery to dissimilar hardware due to its flawed driver. I can confirm, however, that once this driver is installed on the source server it will install perfectly on another server with dissimilar hardware that uses this card during such a recovery process.

5 out of 5 eggsEnterprise level RAID

Pros: This is a true hardware RAID card which makes it suitable for enterprise level usage. It is fast and extremely robust.

Cons: As other reviews have mentioned, this card runs very hot! Make sure the case/chassis you have has excellent airflow to accommodate or else be prepared to add on a fan to help it stay cool.

3 out of 5 eggsDo yourself a favor a put a fan on

Pros: This card does exactly what it is supposed to do and seems to do it well. No problems installing and getting everything up and running.

Cons: I wish I had read the review about the heat issue, because it was a significant issue in my case. I thought I had sufficient cooling in the case, but I have never had a component get as hot as this one does. It got so hot it caused my system to shutdown and I had to rebuild the array. After putting a fan on it everything is fine now, but really on a part this expensive, couldn't they put a five dollar fan on to cool this mini heater?

Other Thoughts: Adaptec, does us a favor and stick a fan on this thing.

2 out of 5 eggsGood luck with SAS Drives

Pros: I give it a 2 1/2 eggs, because it's still a really great controller, but I knocked it because of the lack of SAS support.

Easy to use, great interface, reliable brand, great features

Cons: This card has 2 SFF-8087 mSASx4-4SATA connectors. This works great for SATA drives, but not for SAS drives as you can't plug it in. At the time of this writing, you can not get the cable to for SFF-8087 mSASx4-4SAS connectors. So I ordered the adapters, but the adapters are SATA Female ends which is the same connectors that are already on the Adaptec cables, so you end up with female to female. Nobody seems to make SAS to SATA Male adapters which is what you need to connect to this dongle. The assumption is that you can connect the SATA/SAS adapters directly to male SATA connectors on the controller card, but you can't on this one because of the mini SASx4 connector dongles.

Bottom line, even though they advertise this controller as SAS, the only way to connect SAS drives is by buying a cable with SFF-8087 connectors on both ends where a SAS backplane will except the SFF-8087 fitting and mount your drives that way. Without a SAS backplane, it just doesn't seem possible.

Reminder, SATA drives can plug into a SAS connector, but SAS drives can not connect into a SATA connector. This thing should have SAS connectors, not SATA connectors especially since it's advertised as a SAS controller.

Other Thoughts: Works wonderful with SATA drives

5 out of 5 eggsUpgrading

Pros: Upgrading from a Adaptec 31205 (SATAII) to this. Massively improved the performance of my new SSDs:
31205 - 451 MBs Read / 157 MBs Writes
6805 - 713 MBs Read / 567 MBs Writes
(3-disk RAID5 using the Samsung 840 500GBs disks)

Upgrading my current Win7/64U system was a bit of a pain. But managed, thanks to having a spare PCIe X16 slot available.

Windows currently does not 'provide' a driver for this card, so you have to be sure the driver is installed before attempting to use it.

Before swapping out the cards, install the new card in a spare slot, don't remove your old card or move the drive cables. Boot to Windows, then download and install the drivers for the new card. Shutdown. Move your cables to the new card, remove the old card, then boot. Not hard, but would have been great if the printed manual had this info.

The RAID sets from Adaptec 3 series and above will migrate effortlessly to the new card. I verified with Adaptec before purchasing.

Cons: Only slightly improved the performance of my spinning disk drives, the Seagate 3TB Cudas, only gained about 3% boost from the switch to SATAIII.

Other Thoughts: I'd recommend for anyone with newer SATAIII SSDs to have one of these cards. It is faster than any built-in (Intel chipset) RAID and far safer as well. Because if the computer failed you could move the drives and controller to another machine without worrying about chipset compatibility issues on different motherboards.

5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid

Pros: Rock solid, highly reliable, and great performance. I'm getting 150MB/s read throughput and 259MB/s write throughput in CrystalDiskMark from a five-disk RAID5 array on the virtual file server.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: In retrospect, I regret no biting the bullet and buying the 6805Q that allows you to cache data to SSD and gain higher IOPS.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Does what its supposed to do,

Cons: There was a time long ago when just the name Adaptec was all I needed to to know I was going to get a solid product. But the bean counters have arrived here too.
The issue is heat, heat heat heat & HEAT. This device can not perform its function without external air being applied directly. The itty bitty heat sink is pre-drilled for a much needed fan but no fan is supplied. If you can live 24/7 with an alarm condition for overheating then this little smoker is for you, otherwise plan on compensating for poor engineering out of your own pocket. Quality is dead.
