5 out of 5 eggsPhenomenal Raid Card

Pros: Started out with a NAS build for my home using ZFS. When I ran out of hard disk space I soon realized that ZFS (as great as it is) doesn't allow you to add drives to the vdev. so I offloaded all the data, added an additional 4 drives (8 3tb drives) and utilizing this card, set up a raid 6 array. It runs hot so make sure you buy a 40x40x25 fan for the heatsink, or have sufficient airflow in your case to keep it cooler.

Been running non stop for over a year 24/7 (except for 2 power outages). Never a hiccup or an error.

Cons: none. Yeah it's pricey but remember. you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to my previous review from 1 year ago

Pros: Adaptec has just released a new firmware update that will allow this card to work with UEFI motherboards. Great news. I absolutely love this card. I recently had to replace a hard drive due to failure and it only took 6 hours to rebuild a 8TB array. Raid 6 configuration.

Cons: NONE!

Other Thoughts: Still going strong after 1 year. I leave it on 24/7

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast rebuild and expansion times. More reliable than on board raid. Good support. Raid card can be replaced without lost of data. Good warranty

Cons: Runs hot. I installed a 40mm fan to the heat sink using
4 x M2.6 x 12L screws. You can purchase these screws on internet. Supposedly this card will not work with newer motherboards with the uefi bios. This card will added a few more seconds to your boot up time. I'm not concern about it since i use my computer as a server and its on 24/7.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this because i wanted a secure, reliable raid option. I had nothing but issues with on board raid. My setup is a raid 6 using 5 Seagate 3tb drives. I've tested both rebuild and expansion options and both performed perfect. I rebuilt a raid 6 array in under 8 hours and expanded a raid 6 from 6tb to 9tb in just under 48 hours.
If the raid card goes bad, you can replace it without lost of data. You can also remove the card and install it in another system without the lost of data.

4 out of 5 eggsDebian Squeeze Array

Pros: Works well on Debian Squeeze with an attatched 10TB raid-5 array. Had a few problems with timeout values and how the kernel handles attempting to recover during a hung process, changing the timeout generally fixed the issue:

echo 90 > /sys/block/sdX/device/timeout

In-bios CLI is excellent and very usable, GUI works fine too and includes email alerts that seem to work quite well if there is a problem with the array.

Owned over 8 months and very happy with the purchase, be sure to pair a BBU or have ample UPS power if enabling write-caching.

Cons: Gets extremely hot, not a con, but if you're using a non-rack device point a fan at the heatsink.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking to manage a 5TB plus array, spend the extra money for a decent card like this, don't waste your time and data with an alternative.

1 out of 5 eggsIncompatible with Windows Server 2008 R2

Pros: none

Cons: Incompatible with my Windows Server 2008 R2 install media. Windows installer does not recognize the driver for the RAID card. Adaptec's website states that "some of the Microsoft supplied installation medias contain a faulty script. The script recognizes the signature but the installation does not continue." They recommend that I contact Microsoft for a workaround. This was posted in 2008.

I also tried installing Server 2003 x64 and upgrading; however, I got a BSOD on the install after loading the drivers.

Also, I noticed that when I insert the RAID card into my PC, the PC only boots some of the time. The rest of the time, when I press the power button, the display will not light up. Neither the RAID controller BIOS nor the motherboard BIOS display on the screen. After pressing the reset button or powering off and back on, the computer boots as normal. Motherboard is MSI Z77A-G45.

Other Thoughts: Returning the card and the expander cables for a refund.

5 out of 5 eggsRock-solid SAS Raid Controller

Pros: - Very stable out of the box
- Firmware upgrade simple
- Storage Manager software is enterprise quality
- Recognized 6GB drives without issue

Cons: None that I could find!

Other Thoughts: I had originally purchased the HighPoint RocketRAID 2740 because it has capacity for up to 16 drives (the Adaptec RAID 6805 has 8) but it was a disaster. Besides the fact it would lock up after reboot the software manageability is web based and very buggy not to mention primitive compared what Adaptec offers. Very happy I returned it for the 6805.

I am using the 6805 with 6GB SAS drives and couldn't be happier. I set the RAID configurations once and never looked back. Also the fan-out cable used for connecting 4 drives per port is very reasonable - use Google to see what is available.

As a side note, which may be of importance to some... since the controller is fairly new Windows 7 does not recognize on a clean install thus the RAID sets will not be accessible until you update with the current drives provided by Adaptec. Not a biggie but just wanted to make you aware.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!!

Pros: Very Nice card
Relatively esy install
Works greast with windows 7 64 bit and Asus Rampage 3 Formula.
8 extra port for sata, very easy

Cons: Maybe a slightly shorter cable could be included.
Possibly include a fan to cool the card, but nothing major.

5 out of 5 eggsChaChing!!

Pros: Just order mine combined with a newegg discount only PAID 369.00 for it what I steal! Have used Adaptec cards for years because of their reliability and support. Not always the fastest card out their but I'll take stability and reliability over speed any day of the week.

Cons: People who don't read the description on a product before they buy something than write a negative reviews because of their own stupidity (acornone).

Other Thoughts: Use to have LSI 1506064 and it had a faulty firmware that cause me to loose all the information on my RAID 5 array when one drive went bad. Since than I have always stuck with ADAPTEC. Not saying LSI is bad just my own past experience with them.

5 out of 5 eggsStop complaining do research

Pros: Sign-Man claims that he has a high-tech level. If that is the case you should have done your research before you bought a raid card for Windows XP. Cudos to Adaptec from moving ahead and dropping XP support.

Cons: Sign-Man complaining about a modern day raid adapter for a out of date operating system. Windows 8 is coming out in less than a year time to drop XP sign man.

Other Thoughts: Great adapter from adaptec, I own 3 5805 and this is a welcome upgrade. Stable a fast can't ask for anything more!
